2 Mei without Chase

"Hey Mei wait up!"

I heard my best friend chase holler from behind me. Him and I have always been inseparable since the beginning. Honestly I can't imagine my life without him. Chase had shaggy hair that was light brown and green eyes that changed to blue when he wasn't In the sunlight.

He was the captain of the basket ball and wrestling team at our highschool and a shoe win for homecoming king this year at prom. Not that he let his popularity get to his head since it pretty much came with his title. You see Chase is our future Alpha and one day I will be his beta.

It's only natural for us to bond the way we did. The alpha is always close to their betas. You have to be because when the alpha isn't available they are trusting the beta with their entire packs safety.

Chase and I make a good team and All I can hope is that I get the chance to lead by his side before I have to fulfill my other obligations.

I will be eligible for the auction my 18 birthday .

but that doesn't necessarily mean I will be chosen. In most cases that's exactly what that means but my mother is hopeful that he chooses someone else. I'm currently 16 but my birthday is in a couple weeks and before I know it I will be counting the days. No one knows exactly when the vampire king will come for the auction. Just that he will come.

Every year.

He will come.

"Hey chase what's up." I said as I stopped walking so he could catch up.

Chase came to A screeching halt panting.

"Did you hear somebody egged Mr. Briggs car?"

I smiled and shook my head.

"Chase I know you did not sprint through the halls nearly having an asthma attack to tell me about Mr. Briggs car! What's going on?"

I continued walking to my locker and Chase leaned against the one next to me and began rubbing his neck.

"I got selected." He mumbled.

I knew exactly what that meant.

Chase had applied like all alphas are required to do for a special Alpha training program that's only eligible for Alphas and betas their senior year. I didn't fill mine out because I couldn't be away from my big sister Cassie that long. She needed me.

"Congratulations! That's huge! I'm so happy for you." I lied.

Him telling me this felt like needles were being thrown at my heart. Not only does this mean I lose my bestfriend for a year, but I also have to go through senior year alone. It will be the longest we've been apart. Not to mention I have practically slept next to him almost every night since we were 4. Sometime you have to bite the bullet for their happiness.

"You're lying." He said giving me a crooked smile pulling me out of my daze.

"I am not. To be honest it will be nice to have a break from you for awhile." I said and before I could finish my face landed on his rock hard chest. I felt Chase bury his face into my brown curls and him inhaling deeply.

"I'm gonna miss you too kitten." He broke our hug and kissed me on my forehead which always relaxed me.

"Come on we're gonna be late." I smiled at him and we headed to our English class.

***

The rest of the day had kind of been a blur. I was constantly day dreaming of what my life would be like without Mei and Chase. Now I had to start thinking what my life would be like with just Mei.

What did I even like to do by myself.

I could fish? But Chase always has to take it off the hook for me.

I could take up Cooking? But Chase usually had to step in a fix whatever concoction I had messed up.

I could paint? But that was usually more fun when Chase would make it a paint war.

As I continued thinking of what I would do to pass the time I became more gloom.

Truth be told I myself wasn't too sure who Mei was without Chase. We were that friendship that it was weird for other people not to see us together. Chase had his jock side and his own popular persona because the Alpha role felt natural. He got along with the geeks and the jock all in same day.

He was Chase Michaels and I was just his Mei.

I began to wonder if their was a Mei that even existed without chase. The more I thought about it the more I realized there wasn't. Everything I was good at Chase was good at first and taught me. All the bands I loved came from his recommendations.

The longer I thought about it my gloominess turned to annoyance.

This is ridiculous there has to be a version of me that existed without Chase.

I didn't have any afternoon classes with Chase so when the last bell rang I just headed straight for my car without waiting for him.

I had almost made it there when he popped up out of no where.

"Where are you going kitten?" He said as he reached for my elbow. I was going to reply with a calm response like I'm just heading home, however what came out was:

" MUST I TELL YOU EVERYTHING?"

Chase eyes got wide and he looked around to make sure no one was around.

"Did you start your period early again? I thought I had 13 more days to prepare." Now it was my turn for my eyes to go wide.

"Chase don't you think it's weird that you have my menstrual cycle memorized." I was mortified.

He gave me his annoying crooked smile.

"Not really considering I'm the one who feeds you candy bars through the door every month. A man has to prepare kitten."

"You are older than me by one year! Stop calling me kitten that nickname was cute when I was 6!"

Chase took a step forward and buried his head in my hair. He does this a lot.

"Honey" he whispered.

He took another deep breath before pulling back. "Like it or not you will always be a kitten to me. Now cheer up I have to get to practice but meet me at our spot in 3 hours. I wanna talk to you about something.

He gave me a full blown smile this time and I found my anger dissipate.

"Fine but it's your turn to bring the snacks."

He was already running away when he yelled back " don't worry I won't forget!"

I laughed to myself as I got in my car and drove home.

I pulled up to the pack house and headed straight to the garden.

There I found my older sister Cassie. She was Chases age 17. Cassie was very sick and had to be homeschooled where there was less germs. Cassie was only allowed to be out when all the other kids were at school and only after my mother had cleaned everything.

"What are you doing today Cas?" I called as I came to sit next to her on a bench. I looked over her should you try to see what she was drawing.

"I'm drawing what it will be like when I'm not sick any more." I smiled at her and gave her a slight nod.

The doctors told her that her wolf might save her and give her the strength to heal and beat this if it ever came back. She has been waiting for this day ever since. My parents have been on edge because it may help her but the shift might also kill her in the process. As the days grow closer the more tense everything gets.

Cassie turns 18 In 2 days. Which oddly enough is exactly 6 days before Chases birthday.

I wonder if he will find his mate? I wonder what will happen to our friendship once he gets his mate.

Thinking about Chases Mate makes me sad for a moment but As I think about this I start to wonder what my mate would be like. That thought lasted as long as a blip because I knew I couldn't dwell on the hopes of finding a mate before the vampire king came.

I sat with Cassie for awhile longer then when she went back in the house I worked on my homework until I saw it was time to meet Chase at our spot.

Our spot was a little cave by a waterfall on the edge of our lands. It was next to a meadow filled with flowers. It was my favorite spot on the property.

I sat down at the edge of the cave and put my feet in the water. I leaned back and closed my eyes and just focused on the sound of the waterfall. My serenity was interrupted when I felt water being splashed on my face. My eyes shot open and I sat up only to find Chase rolling in laughter.

"You should have seen your face kitten." Chase continued to laugh as he threw a bag of chips my way.

"You're late." I growled as I wiped the water from my face.

"Actually I got here right on time 10 minutes ago." I looked at him confused.

"Then why are you just saying something now dork?"

Chase gave me one of his crooked smiles. "I saw something beautiful and I got distracted admiring."

Before I could ask Chase what was he watching he cut me short.

"Anyways I asked you here because I have something tell you." I scooted over to make room for him.

"Okay shoot."

He took a seat next to me and placed his hand over mine.

"What am I going to do without you for a year kitten?" He looked at me and for the first time I could tell he was just as worried as I was.

"You will be Chase Michaels the boy everyone loves. They guy every guy wants to be and the guy every girl want to date, That's who"

"Well not everyone." He said as he gave me a nudge.

"Everything is going to be boring without you." He spoke again.

"Well then we will need to make this year the most epic year yet. Better adventure, better pranks, finish out bucket list. The possibilities are endless." I jumped up and said in a triumph voice to try to cheer him up. But he just lowered his head.

"If only we have a year."

"What do you mean?" I turned around a kneeled back down to his level.

"I leave for training the day after I get my Wolf Mei." With that my world had felt like it was being ripped away.

"No that doesn't make sense it's only available for seniors!" I shouted.

"Apparently that doesn't apply to the king. Since I'm in charge of more than just my one pack I need to know more so I need to train longer than the other boys. I guess it's common for Kings." He said as he reached up and began running his fingers through my hair.

I didn't have a year with him.

I didn't have months to figure out who Mei was without him.

I didn't have weeks to get good at my own hobbies.

I had 8 days with him.

8 days and then I was supposed to finish the rest of my junior and senior year without my safe haven.

In 8 days I would have to send off my hardest goodbye.

In 8 days I would be Mei without Chase Michaels.
