The Beginning of an End

The sun beamed across my face. I stepped out of the glittering sun into the shade, looking to my parents.

"You must be safe, Mikyal. We are higher of importance than some, so your partner will be better," My father looked at me with sad eyes. "it will be hard, and you will see things people never want to, but you were picked. I know you can win this."

I looked at him, the clouds shifting above, casting shadows over our home. I stood in silence, wondering if I'd ever see it again. The shutters were new, and bright. The garden covered in flowers. It was so welcoming, and inviting. I loved it.

I looked back at my father, not wanting to cry and make him upset.

"I will win this for you," I said quietly, but confidently. He gave a quick nod. I grabbed my hair elastic and ran it through my straight, light brown hair. I pulled my hair into a ponytail. I paused, then eventually worked up the courage to hug my father for what may be the last time. I saw tears starting in his eyes, and decided to get in the vehicle before he made a scene. I set my backpack on my lap, as I closed the car door. I watched the trees whizzing by as shapes and colours. Setting my head on the window, I let tears slide down my face.
