Pandora: 3

I wiped away her tears and walked around my room whilst cradling her in my arms and giving her small pats to calm her down. I held her in my arms in hopes of her going back to sleep, but then I realized that I was still with a new person and that I ought to make adjustments for her sake, even if I badly wanted to go back to bed.

"Your mom is going to come soon, so please shush for me", I cooed at her. I looked at the over twenty years grandfather's clock that hung on the wall in all its dust and glory, and realized how late I was. "oops, we've got hurry baby, why didn't you wake me at the agreed time, you know what... I love you".

I was so proud of her, she was such a punctual baby, and that's the first time she overslept; that means I was making progress right?, I looked at her for confirmation and realized just how amusing I might seem in her eyes. Her baby blue eyes twinkled and her dimpled cheeks coated with a touch of red stared brightly at me.

Our day had started well, nothing could go wrong. I got the baby and I ready within a span of an hour and set off from home to the hospital. On arrival, I left her care in the hands of the nurses at the daycare center and got ready for my afternoon shift. " Doctor Edwards, it's me, may I please come in".

Diana, a nurse and dear friend of mine spoke from outside of the door to my office, she felt my hesitation and decided to go blunt. " I have news, can I please come in now?", " sigh, come in". Diana was amongst a few who actually knew me, straight from scratch to where I was, but she knew of my side of the story only.

"Here's it Doc.", I broke out of my reverie and stared hard at her open palm, on which a brown envelope lay in all its glory and valor. I took the envelope and opened it to see the contents, it strangely felt like I was opening a Pandora box.

The letter which I had been expecting, during these lonely months finally displayed itself in front of me. I opened it and read it. Diana took my silence as me being saddened by the news, and reached out to give my hand a tight squeeze.

I only nodded and gave her a smile to show apreciation for that simple, yet heart warming gesture. She took her leave and left me in my jumbled thoughts, after much consideration I decided to pay someone a special visit.
