Why Now?

Mira's heart pounded.

No. No. What is he doing here? He shouldn't be here yet.

Her classmates, especially the girls, were captivated by the new transfer student. Some even started squealing and giggling but she didn't notice that. Mira's attention was held by the boy standing in front.

The mixed feelings she was trying to suppress all rushed in. She couldn't breathe.

Pain. Anger. Resentment. But underneath these feelings hides a feeling she was trying hard to deny.

Happiness.

Despite all the pain, the resentment and the anger she's feeling, her heart is still happy. She was happy to see the man that she loved with all of her heart in her past life.

But that happiness was bitter. Eugine's face brought all the bittersweet memories that she kept inside. Both the good ones and the bad ones.

It was all too much for her. Her breath started to get short and quick, as if she couldn't get enough air. Mira found herself feeling lightheaded. She tried to calm herself but it was no use. Her mind started to fill with memories that she wanted to forget.

Why? Mira wanted to ask him. Why couldn't you love me?

Some sane part of her sent signal that it would be a bad idea. The boy in front is not yet the man that she would marry in the future.

Mira hastily stood up. Her action was so abrupt that everybody stared at her in surprise but she didn't notice this. All Mira knows is that she have to get away. Fast. She feel as if someone was strangling her. She couldn't breathe.

"Mira?" She vaguely heard Jamie asked her.

Mira didn't answer. She cant. All of her is focused on getting away. She tried to leave but she stumbled. She clutched the nearest desk for support.

Jamie looked at her in panic. She saw the teacher asked her something, his face worried but she couldn't hear what he said. All Mira could hear is her loud heartbeat. She clutched her chest and looked at the boy in front.

Eugine stared back at her.

In his eyes, there was no coldness that she got accustomed to. All she can see is some curiosity and.. Worry?

He never looked at her like that. Mira found the pain in her heart intensifying.

Why are you looking at me like that? Why now? Mira wanted to ask him but she found herself being embraced by darkness.

Jamie's panicked voice is the last thing she heard before everything went dark.

The plain white ceiling is the first thing Mira saw when she opened her eyes. She blinked in confusion while trying to remember how she got here. She surveyed her surrounding and finally realized that she must be in the infirmary.

She tried to sit up but weakly fell down again. That's when she noticed that she wasn't alone. Jamie is currently sitting beside her, eyes closed with earphones in her ears.

"Jamie." She called. Her voice was weak but it seems that Jamie had an excellent hearing. It was more than enough.

Jamie opened her eyes and looked at her. Her eyes widened and she immediately removed her earphones. "Mira! You're awake. Are you okay?"

Mira nodded.

"Wait here, I'll call the doctor."

Jamie left before Mira can say anything. When she came back, the school's doctor was with her.

"How are you feeling?" The doctor asked her.

"Im fine."

The doctor started to examine her.

"You still have fever." She said to Mira after checking the thermometer. "It might be stress only but I suggest that you rest for a while. I'll prescribe you some medice for fever but if your fever doesn't go away, you have to go to the hospital to have a proper check up."

Mira nodded again.

"Can you walk?" Jamie asked her once they got out of the infirmary.

"Im fine." Mira said but she almost fell down when she tried to walk without support.

"Wooahh. Easy." Jamie supported her.

Mira's heart felt warm. It turns out that classes ended an hour ago and all of the students had already left and went home. Jamie only stayed for her.

"How did I get into the infirmary?" She asked her.

"Oh. That? A white knight carried you."

"A white knight?" Mira asked but Jamie only smiled.

"We called your parents but no one answered the phone. Do you want to call them again?"

Mira shook her head. They waited for a taxi cab. Mira was surprised when Jamie also got in the cab. She was too weak to speak but Jamie answered her anyway as if she could read her mind.

"Since you dont want to call your parents, the least I could do is to make sure that you will reach your home safely."

Silence reigned inside the cab. After a while, Mira spoke.

"Thank you."
