5 Chapter 05

Isabella Brookes's POV

I was really scared by this point, the huge animal in the distance could turn around anytime and see us crawling through the field. Allison felt confident enough to carry on with this plan, but I'm not so sure. I value my life, so what can I do? Its not like I have any other idea, so my only choice was to follow her. If this happened in the fairy tale books I used to love so much, then the characters stuck in this situation would probably do something like risk their life for the other person, distract the big scary monster so their friend could get away.

I remembered all of the movies I watched, where the main character is a brave, fearless, powerful person, goes on quests and adventures, battles sea monsters and kills the mad scientist. I thought about how I used to sit in the theatre and wish I had that kind of life, to gain the eternal fame and glory, to be proud of the things I have done, but now that I was probably close to dying, I would've given anything to be back in my normal life with my bestie.

I tried to think positive, like how I was grateful for several things right now: first, the dirt on the ground was dry, so it wasn't sticky and wet. Second, at least I wasn't suffering alone. Third, my brain was working, so I could distract myself by thinking about other things, like eating ice cream or buying a brand new book from a bookstore.

We were putting a lot of distance between the animal, but it is still not safe to get up and walk because it might still see us. However, I'm pretty sure that animal doesn't have super hearing so Allison and I can talk instead of using sign language.

"Are we just gonna keep crawling until that animal flies away?" I whispered to Allison, glancing back at the creature who was still in the same place as before.

"Maybe for a little while and then we'll stop and rest." She whispered back after a pause.

I sighed, like I said before, I didn't have any better ideas.

I had just started going forward when my hands touched something cold and shiny.

"Wait!" I whisper shouted.

Digging up the object, I realized that it was an antique-looking compass, it seemed like somebody recently dropped it there, because of the amount of dirt it was covered with.

When I picked it up, I was surprised at how heavy it was, like I was holding a dragonfruit. I turned the compass over, there was nothing, just rust, rust, and more rust. There was a lid, and I was just about to open it when Allison grabbed my arm with an iron grip.

"Don't." She said.

"Why?" I asked, it was just a compass, there's no harm, right?

"You don't know if that is magical, if it's the same as the necklaces." Allison replied, and I paled.

"You're right, I don't want to get teleported somewhere else." I said, preparing to just put it back on the ground when a thought struck me. Do I want to teleport somewhere else? Somewhere that doesn't have large winged animals?

Allison seemed to read the expression on my face, and crossed her arms, thinking. She was probably imagining the outcomes of choosing either path for us right now, debating in her head which was better for the future, basically which one would ensure our survival.

"Fine." She finally said in a tone which implied she isn't happy we're going to do this, but its inevitable if we want to get home in one piece.

"Yay!" I said, maybe a bit too loudly, but luckily the animal didn't hear me.

I dramatically opened the lid like I was acting, and waited a few seconds for the magic to start, but nothing happened, a few awkward moments passed before I started tapping the compass.

"Hello? Anyone home?" I whispered, shaking the compass now.

"Is this even magical?" I cried, frustrated.

"Um, maybe its just ordinary." Allison said. But by this time the compass was glowing, just like the necklace had, except it was a bright, vivid, blue colour instead of red. The needle in the compass was spinning like crazy.

Suddenly a blue coloured hole in the ground appeared, along with a gust of wind so powerful that the sunflowers surrounding us were blown out of the ground. Oh poor sunflowers.

Unfortunately, the gust of wind also got the attention of the animal, it turned its head to look for the source, and saw us.

Its dark eyes focused on Allison and I, and I hoped it wasn't hungry. I quickly scrambled up, grabbing the compass, and took a moment for my legs to get used to standing since I was crawling for a while now. Allison did what I did, and we both ran for the blue hole. We stood on the edge for a minute, looking at the drop, which was pretty high. I could hear the animal lumbering towards us, curious.

"Jump?" Allison asked with a worried expression on my face.

"Jump." I agreed, taking her hand.

"Three, two-" I didn't have a chance to count to one, because Allison jumped right in, pulling me with her."

We both screamed until the blue glow turned into sunlight, and the sunlight allowed me to see the dense forest. I closed my eyes when I realized we would crash.
