First Contact

The cold wind and rain blew in through Jack awoke. His head was throbbing. He rubbed his eyes and moaned in agony.

Jack looked around at his destroyed apartment. "I'm alive at least" he said to himself.

The wardrobe from last night had collapsed, the bed he was sleeping in was also broken in many pieces. It was good luck that he had got out of bed to stop the fire he thought.

Jack stumbled to his feet and headed towards the broken window.

The outside world was a mess. Buildings were destroyed and on fire, The constant pouring of rain was diminishing some of the flames, but it wasn't enough. An apartment block opposite him had collapsed, crushing the shops to the side of it.

He could also seee cars from a multistory had fallen on to the road, causing small mountains of cars. The whole city was covered in ash from the meteor shower, with the addition to the heavy rain it was difficult to see too far.

"It was supposed to he a small meteor shower! what's happened!" Jack thought.

He grabbed his phone and started to dial those important to him. WhiteFairyQueen, his Parents, even Peter at work, but no one answered.

He quickly changed his clothes and headed out of his apartment. He opened the door and looked across the hallway, all he could see was the dark world on the other side, the other part of floor 12 had disappeared. He thought about his older neighbours that lived there and sighed.

The stairs seemed to still be intact so he headed down them cautiously towards the ground floor. When he reached floor 5 he herd moaning coming from one of the rooms.

"Is anyone there?" the occupant was moaning, obviously in pain. "Help, anyone!"

Jack grabbed the door handle and twisted it, it was locked.

"Hey, my names Jack from floor 12. I'm here but I can't open your door, are you ok?"

"Jack, my names Alice, by legs stuck and I cant move."

"Ok Alice, I'm going to try and break your door open!"

Jack looked around for something to help him, but the hallway was empty other than bits of rubble that had crumbled from the walls.

He aimed his shoulder at the wall and ran, putting all of his weight behind it.

*BANG*

The door didn't open, "f$#&, that hurt" Jack exclaimed. "I'm going to try again!"

He aimed his shoulder and tried again .

*BANG*

It still didn't open.

"Do you want some help?" someone asked from behind. Jack turned and saw a large, round, balding man who was in his middle ages. "My name's Steve. I'm from the floor above. Let me have a go!"

"Alice, a gentleman called Steve is here, he's going to attempt to open your door!" shouted Jack.

Steve aimed at the door and ran.

*BANG*

The door collalsed under his weight and he flew into the hallway.

"I loosened it!" Jack joked.

"Yeah right!" winked Steve.

Jack ran into the apartment behind Steve. They found Alice in her bedroom, her wardrobe had fallen on her bed, trapping her leg.

"Please help" She begged.

Jack and Steve lifted the wardrobe whilst Alice retracted her leg.

"I've got first aid training from work," mentioned Steven. "Let me have a look."

He rolled up the leg of his pants and felt her leg.

"I'm a Chef, people are always cutting themselves at work!" Steven added, trying to relax Alice who was moaning in pain. "I don't think it's broken, but it's badly bruised, I'll help carry you out of the building."

Steve and Jack lifted Alice between them and headed towards the staircase. They headed down cautiously, with Steve taking care of Alice whilst Jack lead the way.

"So what do you do Alice?" Jack asked, trying to keep her calm.

"I'm in Social Media Marketing" she added. "I spend most of my day using products and posting pictures online."

"Sounds interesting" added Steven, "What type of products?"

"Mainly Cosmetics, Healthy eating and Fashion." she replied, "honestly, I hate it."

They reached the ground floor and headed into the apartment foyer, several people were gathered there.

Jack looked around and recognised a couple people from the Gym amongst the crowd. The rest were strangers to him.

"We need to leave the city!" A man shouted. "Its the end of world and the cities aren't going to be safe!"

"Shut up!" replied another man. " The situation is bad, but it's not doomsday!"

There was a loud rumble and the building started to shake.

"I think we need to leave the building" added Steve.

Jack agreed and the 3 of them headed outside into the rain, a few people noticed there movements and followed.

Down the road was a small supermarket that looked relatively untouched by the overnight shower. People were gathering there and sharing out food and aid to each other. Jack and the group headed in that direction.

"It's Jack isn't it?" one of the group asked. She was a lady he recognised from the Gym.

"Yeah it is! sorry I've forgotten your name?" he replied.

"Its fine, I work on the registration desk so I know most people's names. I'm Clem." she replied. "What's happened to your hair?"

"What do you mean?" he asked.

"The grey streak down the side, it suits you."

"What grey streak?" he asked.

Suddenly the ground rumbled and the apartment block behind them shook violently. The ground beneath them started to tear apart. The group started to panic.

"Run!!" shouted Steve, he threw Alice over his shoulder and ran towards the supermarket. The whole group ran, whilst in the distance the apartment groaned and tilted.

Jack looked back to see the floor open up and the apartment slowly sink into the ground. The ground continued to shake. The cracks spreading around them.

Steve shouted "Change direction, go to the left, go to the left!"

In the distance the supermarket also started to crumble. People ran in all directions to escape the impending destruction.

Behind them, where the apartment building once laid, there was a ground shaking grumble.

*ROAR*

Jack turned, amongst the smoke, a large mound began to raise. Through the darkness two giant red eyes glared back at Jack.
