1 The honorable doctor and murderous intern

Yu Ying woke up in excruciating pain, every cell in her body was on fire, she wanted to scream in agony. There was an annoying beeping sound which aggravated the pounding in her head.

With great effort she managed open her eyes trying to blink blurry shapes into focus. A common patient room consisting of four beds and currently alone only her bed occupied. Yu Ying endured the pain coming from the left side of her body and struggled to sit. She clearly remembered being chased by Dr. Hughes' intern being pushed into high speed traffic.

Doctor Jillian Hughes, was the only daughter of the dean of 'Mathew Green Memorial Hospital'. It was one of the best hospitals in America with a military background, and they both were competing for a professor fellowship. Jillian was entitled and arrogant but an overall a brilliant doctor.

A week before the final decisions were made Jillian had causally inquired about my research topic. It didn't strike me as suspicious because it was a normal thing to be curious in our field of medicine as well as to check out the competition. I didn't get a chance to finish our conversation before I got dragged into an emergency surgery. It finished at 2 a.m. and I was utterly exhausted. Although I wasn't night shift but I did a few rounds in the ER and went to check on a patient a little girl who was involved in a car crash. She had snapped her femur and had lacerations on her face. It wasn't really my job as she was now being managed by Orthopedics and Plastics but I felt somewhat fond of the little girl because she was the same age as my goddaughter.

There was only Nurse Rosa in the ward. She had just started her shift as another nurse had a family emergency and had to leave. We hadn't chatted for long when she mentioned that she saw Dr. Karl Black. He was Jillian's assistant and apparently he was waiting in front of my office. I looked at both my pager and cellphone and didn't see any messages from Jillian. Maybe she thought I was still in surgery and sent Karl to wait for me.

I decided to swing by my office in case it had something to do with a patient. On my way to the office I saw Karl walking to the steps that lead out of the back exit to the hospital. I waved and called out to him, but he didn't notice. What he or Jillian needed probably wasn't urgent. I was already in front of my office and suddenly remembered that my laptop on the desk. For the next week's presentation I needed to practice so even though I was exhausted. I rather practice here otherwise I would definitely fall asleep as soon as I'm home.

Switching on my laptop, I tried to open my folders, but it was something out of my worst nightmare-my laptop was wiped. There was nothing in the folder. It was totally blank.

Not one article, document, not one iota of my research was there and my mind went blank. In a panic I opened my desk drawer where I kept hard drives with my research to find it empty. The first thing that came to my mind was Karl, I did not think that Julian would stoop so low to sabotage me.

At 2:30 a.m. a petite Asian woman ran to the back exit of 'Mathew Green Memorial Hospital'. The anxiety and desperation clearly visible on her face. She ran for about 5 minutes before she spotted a familiar tall, blonde man wearing a doctor's coat standing near the Taco Bell near the bus stop. In her out of control state she lunged at his coat pocket in which a black hard drive was clearly visible.

Yu Ying snared at Karl and totally unaware of the surroundings: "Why, why would you do such a thing? "Shaking the hardrive in her hand. The guilt and fear made Karl's face pale and his hands shake. He swallowed nervously and stuttering explained :" Dr.Yu, please listen...it is not my fault... I'm sorry...this it...it is all Dr.Hughs fault... I didn't want to..."

"What the hell! Do you mean to say that Jillian wanted to sabotage my research topic in order to win the Professor fellowship?" Yu Ying narrowed her eyes and looked at him with disbelief unable to comprehend that what she had speculated was true?

Yu Ying growled out with grinding teeth: "I cannot believe I would encounter something so disgusting in this profession where care and ethics mean everything. Karl let's go report this to the director and maybe I won't report you to the police."

"Dr.Yu ! Please don't do this...you cannot report this. I will be ruined, he'll surly drive me out of the hospital. All my handwork will be for nothing..."

Karl Black was an intern who Jillian had chosen to be her assistant. He did not have an affluent background nor was he particularly talented. In her mind she knew that Karl was a scapegoat whom the dean and director would try and push the majority of the blame on but her rage blinded her. She lost any trace of empathy for Karl and wanted him and Jillian to burn in hell.

"Dr.Yu ! Please don't do this...you cannot report this. I will be ruined, he'll surly drive me out of the hospital. All my handwork will be for nothing..."

" I don't care about that. You made your bed now you should lie on it. To do such a disgraceful thing in the medical field how can you call yourself a doctor..."

She turned and started walking back to the hospital; Karl suddenly rushed over and grabbed her wrist. Speaking slowly as grip on her hand tightened:" Dr.Yu, I will not allow you to ruin my life..."

The murderous tone and his bloodshot gave her a startling revelation. It was past midnight in secluded area with no people around, and she was a small woman in a conflict with a male a good 20 cm taller than her. Although she was confident in her martial art skill and army training Karl had also taken part in military training, and he was a good deal stronger than her and was angered into a murderous frenzy.

To approach him at this place and time was so foolish! She was being downright stupid…

This impulsive behavior had gotten her trapped in a dangerous situation .If her military trainer was beside her, by now,she would have been smacked on the back of the head for being so blind.

The adrenaline pumping in blood somehow gave her the strength to break away from his bruising grip and run. She had not gotten far only a block or so to the next intersection which was a busy highway. As she ran for her life she heard heavy footsteps behind her.

She felt a sharp jolt pushing her body into incoming traffic. In the darkness a truck slammed into sending her body into the air before coming to an abrupt halt onto the ground.

She was sure that she had died. Doctor Ying Yu ; trauma surgeon; age 30 had died on 1 March 2020 on a highway in Houston.
