6 Long Days Growing Colder

The walk to the Cabin was cold first thing in the morning even with having a blanket around me. The leafs were beautiful just last week but now they are starting to fall from all the trees leaving them bare and just the pines to cover the view. She hadn't gotten a winter coat and now she wished she would have because it was going to get colder, and colder.

Once she was dressed she had the next agenda of food with her stomach growling. She felt like she had lost weight since she started working on the farm but she also felt stronger and the work was becoming easier. Now that Ben has taught me to milk the cows, and how to saddle the horses. Chores had been giving feed out for the the other animals, and I was getting pretty quick at finish it all before lunch. Today though, was going to be different, Ben said we would be cutting down the grass in the field to store in the bar for winter. The field was big and it would take awhile to cut down all of it, but not only that..... she had never done anything like it before.

Sitting down for breakfast she started to think about how Ben was always cooking for her and she wanted to do something for him. Show her thanks for everything he had done, especially after last night.

"Ben I can cook, I used to make a few different dishes when I was a nanny and I would be happy to help with some of the cooking if you want"

She waited looking at his face to see if that pleases him but his expression didn't change much. When he turned his gaze up to her with a dry expression.

"If that's what you want I don't mind"

"Thank you! It's the least I can do, I will make our dinner tonight" with that she finished her breakfast and cleaned up like she usually did with a smile of anticipation. She was already planning what she would serve him and she would make it her absolute best.

Her thoughts were broken when Ben started to tell her how they would work through the field today and set a pair of gloves down on the table.

"Put these on and let's get to it, this will be a long week and we need to get it done before the freeze comes... I'm hoping you will make this easier and not harder" he gave her a strange look and walked out of the house.

This tool was strange from the wood handle that curved down and had a sharp blade that curved back at the bottom with a handle half way down the wood to grip with both hands. She observed Benjamin taking the corner of the field and he started to swing his arms in a sharp and quick motion that made the grass fall down in a swift motion. He was making quick progress and made it look easy but she had no idea how hard it would be.

"Once you've layed down the grass come back and rake it into a row so it will dry"

She nodded her head as she began to walk to the other side of the field.

At first when I started it was tricky to get the grass cut with my cold body that felt stiff in the cold morning. Then again it didn't take long before I began to feel the heat my body was putting off and the sweat that was coming down the back of my neck. Looking at Ben to see he had covered double the space I had and he was still going like he was barely sweating.

His body was a machine and it was thrilling to watch his strong movements swiftly go through the stretch of field. Before she could pull her gaze away he noticed her watching him.
