9 Chapter 9: Axel

Axel was awakened by his dad, he saw the beta also in the room. Axels dad was the Alpha and he had brought along the Beta. Axels sat up and stared at his dad.

"Huh?" Axel groaned while rubbing his eyes. His hair was sticking up in all directions and he was sure he had drool on his face. The Beta snorted and turned around trying not to laugh. His dad rolled his eyes and looked at his son.

"Get ready your going on patrol with us tonight." Axel shot up and looked wild at his dad.

"Are you serious?" He yelled.

"Yes, now stop yelling. Be ready in 5." The Alpha left the room with his Beta. The Beta was still laughing at him and his dad smacked him as they left. Axel got up and quickly put on shorts and a shirt. He wouldn't need anything specific because they were gonna end up shifting anyway. He bounded down the stairs and ran outside where his dad was waiting. They all shifted and ran into the woods. When they were far enough in and close to the border they stopped and used their mind link.

'We will be patrolling the borders and making sure everything is tip top shape. Axel you will be leaving the patrol at midnight since you still have to go to school tomorrow. You know the rules.'

Axel nodded at his dad and they ran off to start patrol. Axel loved nights he was allowed to go on patrol. He sniffed the air and enjoyed the wind through his fur. He knew the rules, No engaging in anything dangerous. With any sign of danger he was supposed to run and find the warriors. He wasn't allowed to go off by himself and he had to remain focused and alert.

Axel bumped the Beta and they started to play race and snap at each other. The night was still and clear. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary to Axel. His dad suddenly stopped in his tracks and the other two stopped horsing around.

'What is it dad?' Then a hard breeze went by them. Axel relished in the feeling.

'Beta, do you smell that?' Axel looked at his dad confused and sniffed. He didn't smell anything.

"Nothing Alpha.' The Beta replied, his dad sniffed again.

'Nevermind, I thought I smelt- Nothing.'

The continued on their way, more wary now. Axel put his nose to the sky and sniffed again, except he did smell something this time. He smelt Thomas, he chuckled a bit but suddenly stopped in his tracks. Thomas' scent was mixed with a vampire, and blood. Axel didn't hesitate, he knew he wasn't supposed to but he took of towards the smell.

'Axel! What are you doing?' His dad growled at him and bounded after. Then his dad smelt it. Axel was faster than his dad and was soon out of his dads sight, he hoped the blood hadn't been Thomas'. Suddenly Thomas came into view and and so did the vampire, he was on top of a dog which he assumed to be Thomas'. He tackled the vampire and bit down as hard as he could. Just as the vampire started to fight back his dad came and took over. Axel stood on the sidelines making sure that his dad and the Beta had it under control. When the vampire was injured enough to drag back his dad stopped. He growled at Axel.

'Get back to the house now!'

Axel looked at Thomas, he saw Thomas crying over his dog but knew he couldn't help. Axel was relieved to see that Thomas had not been hurt and that his dog had protected him. When Thomas made eye contact with him he swore he thought he recognized him. The Alpha snarled at him and Axel took off towards home. When he arrived his mom was on the porch. She looked worried and waited for him to walk up to her.

"What were you thinking? You could have been hurt." She sounded like she was going to cry. Axel hugged her.

"I know Mom I'm sorry, He was my friend and I wasn't thinking." His mom hugged him tight.

"I get it Honey, I do but you're still my baby." Axel chuckled.

"Come on, let's go inside and wait for your dad. You're gonna get your ass chewed out." Axel groaned and walked inside, his mom got him some food. He picked at his food as him mom left to do whatever. He pondered on how his dad would react. He had never disobeyed the rules before. He didn't know what to expect. After some time he heard the front door slam shut. Axel flinched and got himself ready.

"What the hell were you thinking!?" his dad shouted. "You should have alerted me and ran for help, you deliberately disobeyed me. You could have been killed. Do you understand that?" HIs dad ranted at him. He had never seen his dad so angry before. Axel was just as angry.

"I know! You don't think I know that!" Axel bursted and jumped out of his seat. "I just-" He sat back down with his head in his hands.

"I know him."

"What? Who?" His dad asked confused.

"The boy who the vampire was after. He is a fairy that will be my partner for that co-habilitation you ordered. He's my friend, I reacted on instinct, he wouldn't have survived." Axel's dad sat next to him.

"As your Alpha I am furious that you disobeyed me." Before Axel could shout again his dad put his hand up. "But as your father I was extremely proud. You handled yourself well and you reacted for the good of others. As a true Alpha." Axel smiled at his dad. "But I won't forgot this for a long time. Now up to bed you have school and I'll think of your punishment." Axel groaned and walked upstairs. He could hear his parents greeting each other.

Axel collapsed on his bed, he would get chewed out more tomorrow. He sighed and looked at his phone wondering how Thomas was doing. He remembered the dog and groaned. He forgot the dog had been in bad shape. He crept to his door and listened for his dad but didn't hear anything.

Axel walked to the window and opened it, he had ditched the screen long ago. He was used to sneaking out to smoke. Thinking of it he walked over to his dresser and grabbed the pack he hid in his socks. Jumping out the window he quickly went to the tree line to avoid being seen by his dad. He opted for walking, Thomas lived a while away but he figured the walk would do him good, he wasn't tired anyways. He would just check on Thomas and go back home. He pulled out a cigarette and lit it. He inhaled the smoke and let out a sigh.

After about an hour or so he was at Thomas' house. He noticed all the lights out and sighed. Noticing the tree in the yard he climbed it and got as close as he could to the nearest window. He sniffed which confirmed that it was in fact Thomas' room. He quickly climbed through the window.

As he had just gotten over the threshold and was about to jump in the room the light turned on. Axel looked up and Thomas was standing in the doorway.

"This looks really bad." Axel said sheepishly.

"Hell yeah it does. What are you a certified stalker?" Thomas questioned.

"What? No, I was just-" Axel realized he would sound more like a stalker if he brought up the dog.

"Just what?" Thomas glared.

"I-uh."

"First you follow me in the woods and now you're climbing in my window. I'm starting to think I should be more scared of you." Axel looked at Thomas in confusion. "That was you in the woods right? With the wolves?" Thomas questioned.

"Uh yeah.." Axel climbed the rest of the way in the window. "I just wanted to see how you and uh the dog were doing." Thomas looked sad at the mention of the dog. "Oh shit, I'm so sorry. Did he die? Oh god." Axel stumbled over his words.

"No, he is gonna be ok but he was really hurt and can't be home right now." Axel let out a sigh of relief. "Thank you by the way...you saved him." Axel looked at Thomas.

"Yeah umm. Just don't go into the woods alone anymore. I thought you were pretty smart for wanting to learn how to defend yourself but now I know your clearly suicidal." Axel snorted.

"How was I supposed to know their was a vampire in there?!"

"Actually there wasn't, I think you attracted him." Axel said slowly. Now that he thought about it, there hadn't been an attack in quite some time. The vampire hadn't even shown up until what he assumed would be around the time Thomas had gotten in the woods.

"He did say something like that...now that I think about it." Thomas stated dumbly.

"Yeah so now that I know your dog is ok and you're still stupid, I'm going to get going." Thomas scowled.

"I'm not the stupid mutt with a hero complex." Axel snorted.

"Don't go picking fights with vampires while I'm gone." Axel smirked as Thomas glared in annoyance. He jumped out the window and headed towards the woods. He pulled out another cigarette for the walk home and thought about what Thomas said about the vampire.

"Why would he go for Thomas specifically?"
