Being able to see came to him as a surprise. So did the feeling of his boots touching the ground. Or having boots, or a body in general. He blinked a few times. 

It was so dark. He spied a handful of flickering lights in the distance. Far, far away, there was light. And where there was light, there always would be life. He walked on the uneven cave surface with unsteady steps. How much time had passed, he wondered. Had time passed at all?

He climbed up a hill and looked all around him. The once bustling settlement of the Council lay ahead. Dark and abandoned, he could see a single light, not even a flicker of it within the settlement walls. Not a single soul moved in there.
