"It Hurts So Much To Die."

Natsu's POV

"Natsu you need to go! Now! That's an order!"

"My orders are to protect you! Your Father's last words before he died were strictly to protect you!"

5 hours Earlier

"Natsu. I fear the worst is upon us." I was standing in front of King Jude's desk. "I agree. But if you don't mind me asking, why'd you call me here?" I asked. He stood up and looked out the window "Mardgeer is going to attack soon, he's making it very clear with all the attacks in the village." he picked up a piece of paper from his desk and handed it to me. On it was a girl with blond hair and chocolate brown eyes, she was beautiful.

"That girl. Is my daughter. She means the world to me. If anything happens to her I'd never forgive myself. She's like her Mother in many ways, Strong, Brave, Beautiful, Kind And believes her duty is to protect her people." I put the paper down on his desk and looked at him "She's princess Lucy Heartfilia, but I'm still not sure why you called me here..." I stated. He let out a sigh and looked at me "I want you to be with my daughter at all times." I jumped back at the thought "You mean in marriage! I hardly know her! I don't even think she would be my type! Plus I'm only 17....I don't think this is a good idea!" I shouted in panic.

He started laughing, and handed me a sword, I looked at him with a confused face. "No not in marriage Natsu. I want you to protect my daughter. If I die, the throne will be empty, she would be the next heir for the throne. She can't die or else Mardgeer's intentions will be fulfilled." I looked at the sword he handed to me, I could see my reflection in the steel. "I promise I'll protect her."

I made my way towards Lucy's room with pride and determination. The castle was quite big, to think just a couple hours ago, I was a simple student in knight academy and now I'm the princess's personal bodyguard. When I arrived at her door, I took a deep breath and knocked twice. No answer. I knocked 2 more times. Still no answer.

I reached for the door knob and was about to turn it when it turned on it's own. I jumped back, and the door opened revealing a blond haired girl with chocolate brown eyes. I blushed at the sight of her, "Take a picture it'll last longer." she stated. I snapped out of my thoughts and quickly bowed down "Uh no! Sorry! My name is Natsu Dragneel! And starting today I will be your personal Knight!" I heard a click and looked up to see a closed door. "Princess?"

"Go away! I didn't ask for a personal knight! I won't accept you!" she shouted from inside her room. I sighed and sat on the floor by her door. "I'll just wait here until you accept me then."

I opened my eyes to find myself in a room. I sat up and looked around. It was definitely a girl's room, "Idiot." I looked to the side to see Lucy sitting on a chair with a book in her hand. She was looking at me, "What kind of a person falls asleep in a hallway?" she asked. So that's what happened.....I thought to myself. "I guess Me your majesty." I replied, she placed her book down on her white bed side table and stood up. "Call me Lucy, Natsu right?" I nodded in response.

"Look you can be my Knight but just know I can fight for myself too. I'm not defenceless. Also let's be friends. Its kinda lonely in the castle." she stated all of this with a smile. "Ok your ma....I mean Lucy."

Just then a loud explosion took over the castle and the ground shook violently, throwing me and Lucy to the ground with a thud. Pieces of the castle started falling from above, a piece of cement fell right on top of Lucy's ankle making her scream out in pain. "Lucy!" I got up quickly and put both my hands under the piece of cement, hoisting it up with all my strength. "Don't worry Luce I'll get you out of here!" I shouted, throwing the piece of cement to the side, revealing a bruised and bleeding ankle. Damn! She won't be able to walk! I picked Lucy up bridal style and quickly ran out the room towards the King's office.

As I ran, I saw other Knights either injured or dead on the ground. I couldn't stop and help them, because right now my priority is keeping Lucy safe. No matter what happens she can't die. I bursts through the doors and laid Lucy on one of couches in the room. The King was looking out the window calmy "How can you be so calm right now!? We're under attack! Your life is in danger!" I shouted at the top of my lungs. He turned to face me "I'm well aware of that Natsu." I looked at him in shock, "But.....wait you wanna die?" I asked. He let out a little laugh and looked at a picture of his wife and daughter, "A King's job isn't an easy one. Sometimes they have to make decisions. And they're not always easy ones. Sadly I have to die to protect my daughter. There's a secret door that leads to the outside of the Kingdom's walls. You and Lucy must go there. I'll stay here and keep Mardgeer busy, I know I won't make it out alive. But if it means you and my daughter will then I'll glady die to see that through." I looked down and clenched my fists, "Natsu. Protect my daughter that's an order." I nodded in response.

Just then the doors burst open again, and in walked Mardgeer. I quickly grabbed Lucy and Jude pointed to the door, I opened it quickly, there was a narrow tunnel inside. Lucy looked at her Dad and her eyes watered "Go Luce, we can't stay any longer." I stated, she wiped her eyes "Ok. I love you Dad." she mumbled under her breath. She went into the tunnel and started crawling away with me following behind. I closed the door and sat by it for a second listening to what was going on in the room.

"Jude, you've lost. You will die and so will your precious little girl." I heard Mardgeer say. "Maybe I'll die but you'll never be able to kill my daughter." I heard a vine like sound and heard Jude shout out in pain, I clenched my fists "Damn it....." I mumbled under my breath.

When me and Lucy reached the end of the tunnel, we caught our breath. I heard Lucy wince in pain as her hand covered her ankle, I took off the white scarf I had around my neck and tied it around her ankle "Here this should help." I said, she smiled at me. Just then a whole bunch of weird looking Monster guys surrounded us. I stood in front of Lucy protectively

"Natsu! You need to go! Now! That's an order!"

I felt a stabbing pain and looked down to see a vine in my leg. I yelled out in pain, "Natsu!" Lucy shouted. I grabbed my steel sword and walked forward, I felt another stabbing pain in my arm, and another in my stomach, and another in my shoulder. All I could hear was Lucy screaming my name, "I can't die! Not yet! I can't die! Not ever! My job is to protect Lucy! I can't fail! I won't Fail! I will keep my promise!" fire emanated from my body and the vines turned to ashes.

"FIRE! DRAGON ROARRRRRRRR!" a wave of flames came out my mouth and took all the monsters out, leaving nothing but ashes. I fell to the ground with a thud and I heard Lucy scream, I felt her hands lay my head on her lap as she started crying. I let out a laugh "Ya know your eyes even look pretty when you cry." she smiled "Shut up Idiot." I put my hand in hers "I guess it's my turn to die huh?" I asked. She looked at me and started crying even more as she put her forehead on mine. "But there's one thing I have to do before I go." I stated, Lucy sniffed and wiped her eyes with her free hand. "And what's that?" I smiled and put my other hand on the back of her head as I put my lips on hers, and surprisingly she kissed back.

Our lips parted and I laughed at her blushing face.

"Ah Damn, It hurts so much to die."

In that last moment, all I could hear was Lucy's crying and screaming as I felt my life slip away, leaving nothing but darkness.
