That ball wasn't a common thing. It was a weapon of destruction developed by the current Ulesis on the basis of some ancient weapon of a foreign race. Based on their lethality and use, these balls were ranked as per the human Black-Yellow-Earth-Heaven Alchemical weapon grade. 

The one in Recarde's hand was a low-grade earth rank explosive bomb. It could very well kill any early and mid-stage Elemental Realm cultivator if they are directly hit or are in its range. It is said to be more lethal and effective than talisman and alchemical products that are made by humans having similar effects.
