"What are the problems?" 

Jason was avoiding my eyes, but I searched his face with my own until he looked at me again. He was very visibly uncomfortable. 

"You have to promise that you won't get upset." 

That was never a good sign. He might have gambled away all his money and gotten our house repossessed…

"Just tell me while I try not to overthink what you're about to say." 

Jason paused for a moment to read my face before continuing in a low voice. "First off, I rejected the deal with Rafael." 

If I ever thought it was impossible for my blood pressure to crowd my eyes, clearly, I was wrong. "Why?"
