Prologue

A loud thud could be heard as she fell to the ground, face first.

'No,' she mumbled and dragged herself up.

Her legs ached, and her face was tear-stained but the shrieks that resonated behind her kept her going. She had been running for days with hardly any food. She barely got any sleep; even if she wanted to, she had to keep one eye open.

Those monsters were everywhere. One moment, they were gone, the next they'd suddenly appear, ready to kill.

She had cut herself so many times while trying to get away. Her clothes were ragged and blood slowly flowed out of a long cut on her thigh.

She couldn't call out for help. No one was around, they were all dead. She was alone. Even if someone was still there, her call for help would draw the monsters to her location.

Another large stone and she found herself on the ground. It was too dark to know where she was going. She tried to lift herself again, but her arms were too weak. Her body longed for rest. She rolled herself up as tears streamed down her face.

Everywhere suddenly became quiet. It felt so peaceful. She wasn't going to make it out alive and she accepted her fate. It was sad, but she had to face reality.

The sound of a twig snapping brought her out of her trance. Her breathing became hard as death came her way. The monster limped towards her, snarling and she stared at it, eyes wide and blurred with tears.
