9 Black Cats and Bad Vibes

(Alex's POV)

What is his problem? Why the hell does he want to help me? Is he just using me to stay out of danger? My mind races as I make my way to the door to leave, but then a funny feeling hits me. One of those feelings where you know you have to stay or something is going to happen. I find myself an empty classroom and decide to just nap until I have to go home.

*BEEEEEP*

The bell wakes me up and I slowly grab my stuff and lazily walk to the door. I just touch the handle when I hear a loud bang in the hall. Curious, I exit the room, rubbing the sleep from my eyes and I see four guys and Claire down the hall and I just get a feeling when I hear her boyfriend start talking from out of my range. Deciding to be a little obvious about it in hopes they'd back off, I pull out my revolver and walk up behind them before taking out the four guys around Claire. I give Jack enough of a distraction to take out her boyfriend, but she launches herself at him and in a split second, I get in between them, and hold her to the wall, slightly cutting into her wrist and hiss, "Go now or your death won't be so quick." She quickly nods, knowing there's no escape. I let her go and walk off barely saying, "Later." with a slight wave as I leave. When I walk out to the commons, all of the angels are gone. Claire must've told them to clear out after what happened. Probably figured I'd come finish them off. I leave and walk out to the woods by the lake before shifting into a massive, white wolf and run through the forest until I reach a small cave opening. Not possible to fit in my current form, I shift back and crawl through the doorway, pushing my bear pelt door to the side before I am greeted by a wave of heat from the fire going. My fluffy black cat, Sophia jumps up into my arms as I sit down on the bed. Once I get comfortable, she shifts into a pale, slender young woman with black hair and bright green eyes. She looks up with her arms wrapped around my neck and lightly kisses my neck while I gently pet her. "How was school today?" She purrs happily.

"That new human is more interesting than I thought. He wants to help us with my dad, so his training starts tomorrow."

She sits up straight and looks me in the eyes, "HE WHAT!?! Wait what all did you tell him and why? How did he get you to tell him about it?"

I stammer, "W-well, um. I just kinda told him. I don't know why. I just felt really drawn to him all day. I could even tell when he was going to be in danger earlier. I don't understand it."

She squeezes the bridge of her nose as she inhales sharply, "Well, at least he's human. If he does anything to compromise the plan, will you be ready to do what needs to happen?"

I look her in the eyes and nod, "Yes. The mission still comes first. I will not let foolish human emotions get in the way of my plan."

She nods and bites my jaw roughly, "Good. You better not let anyone get in the way. Honestly, it would be better if you just killed him now and put him out of his misery."

I shake my head, "No. He's special. He has powers Soph. I need to figure him out and it might be good to get him on my side. Maybe he is the key to strengthening my abilities so I get less exhausted."

She sighs and says, "Okay then. I can't tell you what you can or can't do, so enjoy the little brat while he's still alive. Just remember, you will outlive him and he won't be around for long compared to you."

I roll my eyes, "I know. I know. Might as well study him while he's alive though and learn what I can." She gets up and stretches out before being transformed back into a cat. I peek outside, "Damn. Dark already. I was hoping we'd have more time before you were changed back." I lay down on the bed and start planning how I want to train him. I know the leviathans retreat back to the lake at dawn, so he'll take on the first wave. Hopefully he knows how to defeat them. We'll find out. The second wave will probably overpower him and I'll have to step in to assist. For this session, I just want to see what he can do on the fly. He's going to have to be ready to take on mass amounts of enemies at a time and if he can't keep up in the end, he can't help me. Well, I'm drained. I'm gonna get some sleep so I can be up. I get up and put out the fire before getting under the blanket and shifting into a wolf. Just as I close my eyes, I feel Sophia crawl under the blanket and snuggle up beside me.

When I wake up, Soph is already gone, so I quickly get my stuff together and get out the door so I can make it there on foot. I get there and I peak out and check the tree line when I spot Jack by the dock. Dumbass. Quickly and quietly I run over to him and smack him in the back of the leg with a stick that he catches just as it hits him. "Haha gotta be quicker than that." I laugh at him as he groans at me, "That's not fair, you're inhumanly fast to see. Also, you're literally barely a blur and silent as hell."

I shrug, "Well, you're gonna have to get good. You think anything teleporting is going to be easy if they find out your weak point? Now, we have about half an hour before we'll begin. Follow me." I lead him to a huge tree that basically has a ladder of branches up it and sit up in the middle, where you can see all the way around the lake. Jack sits beside me, looks me in the eyes with a straight face and says, "I have questions and I want answers."
