2 Chapter Two : The Breaking Moment

Dinners the same as it always was for the past three years. Fish and rice. My brother, Tom, loves to give me a hard time, but not today...especially not today. Today is the 20th year wedding anniversary for my parents, or rather that would be for my parents. My parents, Josh and Silva Reed were part of the Organization. Being a part of the Organization is not considered an opportunity, but rather a disclaimer. The only reason my parents were ever part of it was to guarantee our safety, but of course, the Organization can't save everyone...or at least that's what they want us to think. I lost my parents to the hands of the Organization. And I won't let Tom or Chris be taken too.

We eat in silence, but are interrupted by the Organization's promotion video. They broadcast it everyday, so it's normal. Tom and I walk over to the cheap TV and sit on the old, peeling leather couch. "Good Evening Rhode Island, I am Sean Dorian, creator of the Organization '', the TV plays as if it's the first time we've heard it. I look over to see Tom mimicking the words as if he was Mr. Dorian. But thank God he isn't. The rest of the promotion goes as it has gone for the past 50 years. Explaining how the Organization is "saving" our lives, and how we should "comply" to the rules of safety and regulation in return. As if we get anything in return. Tom and I exchange a glance as the promotion comes to an end, which we know from watching it for the past 16 years. "However, us here at the Organization headquarters are making a...slight adjustment" Mr. Dorian pronounces. I dart my eyes at Tom, who seems to be thinking the same thing I am judging by the look in his eyes. We in Rhode Island all know that "slight adjustments" never mean good news. Tom reaches for my hand, and without looking at him, I grab it and squeeze as hard as I can without making him scream. The last "slight adjustment" got our parents killed, taken from our hands. We brace ourselves for the worst as the TV utters, "The Organization will now be checking all birth reports to confirm all our citizens are logged. Thank you". I pause, and sit in silence. My phone rings with Chris's name bright on the screen. I pick it up and listen to what I thought, what everyone thought was the impossible. Chris breaking.
