“Dump him here,” the captain ordered.

“What?” Jenkins sounded a little shocked.

Perhaps it was the cloud of pain Gaven was in, but he wasn’t shocked. He wasn’t anything but in pain and wanting the pain to stop. Maybe being thrown overboard was for the best. There were only small islands around, none close enough for an injured man with a bad foot to swim to. He’d die for sure. Gaven didn’t think he wanted to die, but he had no fight in him at this moment. What good would fighting do him here, he thought. He’d just incur more punishment, and he’d hate to see what else Captain Barn could come up with as Gaven knew well, his cat was not his only tool of punishment.

“You heard me. Let the Merfolk eat him. With all that blood, they’ll be on him in seconds. Serves the bastard right for freeing one,” Captain Barn said coldly.
