16 Sarai's Past

“Avalon…” Someone was shaking me their voice sounded like a distant echo.

“Dear wake up.” I blinked myself awake, mom's face was inches away from mine. Then she backed away. My curtains were drawn and lights were on. “What time is it?” I asked.

“Very late sweetie.” She said. I rubbed my eyes a bit to clear my vision. They were a little swollen because I cried myself to sleep.

“Is Cassidy awake?” I asked. Mom shook her head.

“She's a mess, her mom wanted to take her home but it's too risky.” She sat on my bed and looked at me with a sad expression.

“Something wrong?” I asked, sitting up straight in my bed. The fabric of my skirt had wrinkled.

“No, though I think we should have that talk I mentioned earlier.” She said. I was ready to hear it, so I sat up straighter in bed and gave her my full attention. Mom took a deep breath and began her story.
