Sehun tapped his ballpoint pen against the table as he stared at a certain someone from across the cafeteria. Soft brown hair that was easily blown with the wind, kind hazel eyes and beautiful tan skin; Sehun was enchanted and he wanted nothing more than to capture that image and put it on his canvas. He wasn't perfect, he wasn't even the most attractive guy he'd ever seen, but there was something about him. Something about his imperfection that was so beautiful. How had he never noticed him before?
Amber looked at him in annoyance.
"Are you just gonna keep staring at the guy?"
She rolled her eyes, leaning back in her chair. "Just go and ask him if you want him to be your model. Jeez. It ain't rocket science."
"You're right," He shook his head with a sigh, "It's worse than rocket science."
"Should have seen that coming," Amber mumbled with a sigh. "Anyway, are you planning to stare at him until he falls in love with you or something?"
Sehun contemplated for a moment. "Edward did it in Twilight," he said thoughtfully.
The short-haired girl blinked at him, "Sometimes I don't know when you're being serious."
Sehun didn't reply and continued to stare at the boy. Kim Kai was his name. Sehun was never really interested in him before. A few days ago he'd just have have shrugged him off like everyone else at school. But then this one time, while he was watching some hot K-Pop boys on YouTube, he stumbled upon this video of Kai and his friend, Lay, covering the dance for SHINee's "Lucifer". And Sehun found himself staring at the former, almost enthralled. Sooner rather than later he found himself subscribing to their channel and watching every single dance cover of theirs. That was when he decided he wanted Kai to be his model for his upcoming art contest.
Except... Sehun had zero social skills and he couldn't just go up to the guy and ask him, because pfft, that'd be stupid. So he opted for the much classier option of staring at him every lunch period, trying to memorize his features so he could go home later and try to draw him.
Every time he tried though, it just never came out quite right. And so he realized all over again his crushing failure at the most basic aspects of life. Talking to people. He just couldn't do it. He couldn't go up to a stranger and just strike up a conversation. Just the thought of it made his whole body quiver in discomfort.
Although, on staring at the guy for so many days in a row, he couldn't help but notice a few things about him. He hung out with the same bunch of people almost everyday; his girlfriend Victoria, an attractive, black-haired girl who was as beautiful as she was smart, and his three best friends, Lay, Kris and Shownu. He also noticed that Kai smiled a lot. Like, a lot. Except, his smile was so obviously fake that it was almost sad, at least to Sehun. He honestly felt that fake smile to be very unappealing. What he did find appealing, however, was his occasional resting bitch face when he thought no one was looking or when no one was talking to him. Why? Because it wasn't fake, it was genuine. It was rather comical too, when someone who smiled so much showed that face that had "I'm so done with life," written all over it. It also gave him this air of unapproachable-ness (if that was even a word) that was somewhat... attractive. Sehun couldn't explain it.
"You do know the deadline for handing in your submission is in a week right? And you still haven't turned up squat." Amber said with an eyebrow raised.
"Yes I know," Sehun groaned, burying his face into his arms in frustration. Maybe I should just back out of the competition. The theme was "People", and as much as Amber tried to convince him to pick literally anyone else on the planet, Sehun insisted that he wanted to draw Kai. Problem was he never could get his face quite right no matter how much he tried.
Amber sighed in pity just as the bell rang, meaning lunch period was over.
"Come on art boy, we have class. We'll figure something out soon."
Sehun nodded, adjusting his glasses before standing up with his books. He spared one last glance at Kai when suddenly the boy's piercing hazel eyes were on him, making him blush and immediately look away.
Amber stood outside the school building, waiting as she leaned against a tree. Usually, she spent some time with Sehun in the art club after school hours but today she had to make an excuse to him. That boy was hopeless and it was time she did something about it.
Her eyes lit up when she saw Kai walk out of the school gate, accompanied by Kris, that giant blonde dude he always hung out with. She made her way towards them.
"Hey, could I talk to you for a second?"
Kai looked up at her, smiling politely. "Yeah, sure. What's up?"
"You know Oh Sehun, right? Glasses dude who wears oversized clothes, always on top of the class? Too fabulous for his own good?"
Kai chuckled at the last part, "Sure I do, he is in my class. What about him?"
"You see, he has this art competition thing coming up soon and he's been looking for a model. He wanted you to model for him but dear God the boy is way too antisocial and wouldn't dare ask you himself no matter how much I tried to talk him into it. So I took it upon myself to help a sister out, being the awesome that friend I am."
"Wait, what art competition?" Kris perked up.
"It's this national competition. You know, for the art club."
His eyes widened, "We have an Art Club?"
"Yes, do you live under a rock?" Amber said with a frown, before turning to Kai, "Anyway, what do you say?"
"Okay so how can I join the Art Club?" Kris asked again just as Kai was about to answer. Amber groaned, annoyed at the constant interruption.
"Talk to the club president, Kyungsoo."
"I'll do it." They both said at the same time. Amber blinked for a second, a little stunned before nodding slowly.
"Great, Sehun will be at the art room tomorrow, second period. If you're free do stop by."
"Alright," Kai said, "I'll be there."
"Well then, I'll be on my way." Amber said, turning to walk away. She didn't really like talking to people in school apart from Sehun. Most of them were two-faced, fake, and tried so hard to fit into some poor criteria just to be 'cool'. It was sad really, but Amber wasn't interested in anyone who wasn't going to be true to themselves, and Sehun agreed with her. That was why they were best friends.
The next day, Sehun was making his way towards the art club room, walking as close to the walls as possible to avoid the loud and rowdy teenagers in the hallways. Why'd they have to be so loud? Sehun thought, shuddering. He was born with really sensitive ears and hated loud noises. He let out a sigh of relief once he reached the art room, turning the knob to walk in.
Until he saw a familiar tall, brown-haired figure standing there, turning to look at him, and he was quick to walk right out.
Oh my God, what is he doing in here? Oh boy... Why am I so nervous?
He looked around in panic and noticed a plant next to the wall. He quickly scrambled down next to it, earning a few weird looks from the students passing by. Sehun was a little weird and he knew that, so he was used to those looks. I am now a plant. He thought. Man, I am convinced I was a chameleon in my previous life, I just blend in so naturally, no one would even realiz-
Sehun smacked his lips together, slowly turning his head to the side where he saw Kai standing by the door, looking at him weirdly. He simply looked away, not replying.
"Are you alright there?" Kai asked slowly.
"I don't know who you're talking to. I'm a plant." Sehun mumbled.
At this, Kai quirked a brow, "You're a plant?"
"Oh, okay then, plant," he said in an amused tone, playing along. "I'm looking for a certain Oh Sehun, do you happen to know where he is?"
"No," Sehun said shortly, glancing at Kai. Why is he looking for me? I mean Sehun. I'm a plant. His curiosity did get the better of him though. "But I could send him a message for you."
"Really? That'd be great," Kai said in an airy, sarcastic tone, "Let him know that I'm willing to be his model."
"Wait, how did you know about that?" Sehun asked, eyes wide.
Kai smirked, "A friend of yours, I mean Sehun's, told me."
Amber. Oh my God, I'm going to kill you. Then I'm going to hug you.
"O-Oh..." Sehun muttered, clearing his throat, "Sehun says he'll meet you in the Art club room after school hours."
"'Sweet. Well then, I should get going. Nice meeting you Sehun, I mean, Mr. Plant."
Sehun let out a sigh of relief. For a second there I thought he blew my cover.
"Good luck with the whole photosynthesis thing."
Sehun looked up at Kai with sparkly eyes, touched. "Thanks, man. You know, not many people appreciate us these days."
Kai chuckled, "I can only imagine."
With that he walked away, leaving Sehun dumbfounded for a second before getting up and doing a ridiculous dance. Fuck yes! He's gonna be my model! Suddenly, Kyungsoo walked out of the room, staring at Sehun judgmentally as he froze in his position with his arms above his head.
"Uh... I was just stretching."
"Sure you were," Kyungsoo said blankly, walking away, leaving Sehun behind embarrassed.
Everyone in the art club room turned to the door at the sudden yell accompanied with the giant figure that burst in.
"Oh, sorry," he quickly apologized, voice now softer as he gently closed the door behind him. "I'm looking for Kyungsoo," he whispered, seeing as the room was so quiet and everyone went back to their work.
"That'd be me," Kyungsoo said, eyes still on his canvas as he worked on his landscape painting, "What do you want, random person I've never seen before?"
"I want to join the art club."
Kyungsoo stopped, looking him up and down with his dull eyes that made Kris shiver slightly. Kyungsoo was tiny. He had black, straight hair that fell over his forehead, big brown eyes and plump lips. Kris thought he looked fluffy but still somehow intimidating.
"Do you have a portfolio or something?"
"I did bring some of my drawings. I'm like the best artist I know." Kris said proudly, handing him the sketchbook he was carrying. Kyungsoo uninterestedly looked through a couple pages, face contorting gradually as Kris stared on expectantly. He then closed it and handed it back to Kris.
"Whatever this is, I never want to see it again."
Kris gasped, "Excuse me?! I mean, I get that it's different, but it's my own artistic expression, my style, ya know? I could draw trees and lakes as well, but that would be boring and generic and I prefer to do things my own way. I mean come on, look at this hamburger eating a french fry!"
"Exactly, look at it. And then never look it at again. And then burn it so no one ever has the displeasure of looking at it again."
Kris brought a hand up to his chest, hurt. "Y-You're rude as hell! But you know what, I'm not giving up. I'm not leaving this room until you let me into your club."
Kyungsoo shrugged, turning his attention back to his own painting. "Okay."
Kris stubbornly stood there with his arms crossed and waited.
"Come on! I stood here for an entire minute! A minute! Cut me some slack!"
"Yeah Kyung, take some pity on the guy," A girl who was silently watching them said from beside Kyungsoo said with an amused smile. "I'm Sera by the way. Vice president." she quickly introduced.
"Listen to Sera, man." Kris said, "Sera knows what she's doing."
The girl rolled her eyes at Kris, before turning to Kyungsoo, "It's not like it hurts having some new members. We're already unpopular enough as it is."
"I don't need new members who won't add anything to the club. If anything he'll take away from us."
"Listen here you grumpy little marshmallow," Kris spoke, glaring at Kyungsoo, who raised a brow at the title, "Art has been my dream ever since I was a little boy getting potty trained. I've always wanted to become a famous artist. And I will not stand here and take it as you humiliate my dreams and my skills!"
"Or lack thereof," he mumbled, before sighing in defeat, "Alright. You're welcome to join the club. On one condition."
Kris' eyes sparkled, "What is it?"
"You'll be my assistant."
"Uh-oh..." Sera said, looking at Kris seriously, "Don't do it. Run away. It's not worth it."
Kris shrugged, ignoring her. "Sure, I'll be your assistant."
Sera chuckled, "Oh man, you're in for a hell of a time. Literally."
Kris wasn't sure what she meant by that but judging from the devious glint in Kyungsoo's eyes, he couldn't help but worry. Just a little bit. But it was okay, he had a dream and with following that dream came compromise. Right?
