That was when she broke out in tears. Full on bawling like a baby. I didn't know what to do. I never in a million years would have thought Nico would be crying, and definitely not in front of me. She didn't stop for a long time. How long, I'm not quite sure. I just know it was long enough. The only reason she stopped crying was because River popped her head up from the water again.
She gave me a quizzical look but said "I'm almost ready to head wherever we need to go."
Nico had returned back to her usual state of bossiness and responded "We need to go down deep into the water. I need you to give us air bubbles."
River nodded and gestured for us to step off the boat. I climbed down and Nico followed, River ducked under the water and gestured for us to follow. I ducked my head under and suddenly it was encased in a bubble of air. Nico did the same with the same result. She nodded to River. Then started swimming down toward the ocean floor. We swam for a long time, occasionally taking breaks. When we got close to the ground I glanced over at River and saw she looked exhausted.
"Do you need a break?" I asked
She shook her head and gestured for us to keep going. We swam a little while longer and I noticed my air bubble was getting thinner. River looked even more tired and she collapsed on the ocean floor. With a final burst of energy, she rocketed us up to the surface of the water so we could breathe. Our boat was there waiting for us. I climbed out of the water and found myself perfectly dry Nico too. We stayed on the boat for a long time waiting. Nico decided it would be a good idea to jump into the water and grab River but she soon came back empty-handed and soaking wet. She climbed onto the boat and the weight of her now-wet clothes caused us to start to sink!
"Nico! Take off your jacket!" I yelled
Nico was wearing a very heavy now soaking-wet denim jacket. She quickly pulled it off and threw it over the side. We were still sinking but not as quickly now. The next heaviest thing on the boat was our backpack which we couldn't throw overboard but maybe if we emptied out a few things they would be lighter. I quickly grabbed my backpack and pulled out the heaviest thing which happened to be my journal. I quickly threw it back in and pulled out something else. What I came up with was my laptop from school (they let us keep them over the summer). I had left it in there because I never had time to empty it out. I threw the laptop overboard then threw a few of my school books for good measure. I turned on Nico's backpack and found it completely empty except for one thing but Nico snatched it away before I could see what it was.
"Get out of my stuff or I'm going to throw you overboard" She growled
"Ok, ok calm down"
I started to back away from her and the whole boat tipped over! Now I'm not sure if I mentioned this but I can't swim and definitely not in my clothes. I started to sink down toward the ocean floor. I had almost run out of breath when my air bubble returned! I looked down but was rocketed up again I made it to the ship which managed to keep me afloat. River appeared next to me and I grabbed her as she started to pass out again.
"Get. Nico. Ambrosia. Backpack." she managed to say before she fully passed out.
"Nico!" I called but I couldn't see Nico anywhere "Nico!" I called again but Nico was missing.
I climbed back into the boat and dragged River with me. Our weight wasn't enough to sink the boat but her backpack was. I quickly dragged out the heaviest thing which was a bag full of something that resembled fish sticks but was labeled 'AMBROSIA'. I didn't know what that was but it was probably what River had been talking about. I quickly threw her backpack into the ocean and took out a piece of Ambrosia. I didn't know how much to give her so I started out with a small amount. When it didn't work I gave her a little bit more. She didn't wake up but she looked slightly less pale. I fed her more until her skin returned to its usual color then I lay her down and let her rest.
