2 2. The Basic Magic class

The students all excitedly clamoured onto their seats the moment the class started. Everyone scrambled for a front row seat, and they gawk at the professor with excited eyes.

The professor this time was a middle aged lady. Nevertheless, her flaming red hair made her look decades younger.

"Morning, today is your first basic magic class. I will be teaching you the fundamentals of magic today." The professor stated, she then proceeded to look around the class.

"Can anyone tell me what is the most important part of magic?" The professor asked sheepishly.

"Mana!" Jamie exclaimed excitedly.

"Indeed. All humans have mana but not all humans are capable of using magic, do you know why?" The professor continued.

The class stayed silent this time around. No one had the answer.

The professor shook her head in dissapointment. "It is because while everyone has mana not all can successfully draw mana out of their bodies. The more mana a person is able to draw out, the more talented they are. For example, my body can be filled with 100 degrees of mana but I am only capable of drawing out 20 degrees of mana at a time. That means that I can only cast spells with 20 degrees of mana resulting in less effectiveness." The professor explained.

"Professor, do we attack with mana?" A curious student asked.

The professor smiled. "No, mana is only a medium used to cast spells. Mana cannot be used to attack, infact Mana is harmless." The professer then proceeded to materialize a tiny blue ball.

"This is my mana. As you can see it is harmless. This is because all your bodies contain mana. For mana to harm someone, a mana ball has to contain more mana than their body. As a result, it is impossible to harm someone of equal strength with mana.

Of course, if a higher ranked mage were to try to harm you with mana it is possible, because the mana they can draw out is more than what your bodies contain." The tiny blue ball floated around and pushed on students body.

"So trying to harm someone with mana is useless and ineffective that is why we use spells."

At that moment, the blue mana ball turned into crimson red. Then, it became a tiny red flame.

"My elemental affinity is fire. One person can have only 1 elemental affinity, for a person to have more than 1 elemental affinity that is a genius seen in 10000 years." The professor calmly explained.

"Now for this class, you will attempt to draw out your mana. Don't worry if you fail, even I only managed to draw out my mana after 3 weeks of training and even then I was labelled as a genius. Start now." The professor said.

All the student immediately put out their hands and tried their best but to no avail.

The professor shook her head.

"You guys are too impatient. You have to attempt to feel the mana in your body first."

The students immediately withdrew their hands.

"Umm...professor what should we do?"

"Calm yourself, close your eyes and meditate. Try drawing the mana particles in the air, it can help you feel the mana in your body. I can't offer you any more instructions up to this point because each and every individual is different." The professor said.

Immediately, all the student sat cross legged and closed their eyes, attempting to feel and draw the mana in the air.

The professor looked around the classroom to monitor their progress.

"Hmm?" The professor raised her eyebrows.

One of the students had a blue glow around his body.

"What's your name?" The professor asked when the student opened his eyes.

"Robert."

"Robert, is this your first time meditating?" The professor asked almost excitedly.

"Yes."

"Genius, what a genius! Despite meditating for the first time, you managed to draw mana from your surroundings in 15 minutes. If you manage to materialize a mana ball before the end of this month, I'll report it so you can transfer to the genius class!" The professor said excitedly almost jumping out of happiness.

"Yes professor, I will work hard!" Robert declared.

"Good good, that's the attitude!" The professor chuckled happily. "All of you must try to become like Robert, only then can humanity fight back agaisnt savage beast and aliens!" The professor sternly lectured.

"Yes professor." The class chanted.

"Alright, continue meditating. Before you blindly try a draw the mana, try feeling it first. After you can feel the mana particles, then you establish a connection and try to draw it in." The professor said.

The professor continued to monitor the student's progress and she was getting extremely excited.

The blue glow around Robert was getting progessively thicker and it seems that he was getting closer and closer to producing his own mana ball.

As the professor scanned the crowd, her eyes fell on one particular figure that was sitting on the window seat and staring onto the horizon.

"You....what are you doing?" The professor asked in a dangerously angry voice. The whole class was silently meditating except for this student.

Despite the obvious anger in the professor's voice, she received no reply.

"Why are you not meditating?" The professor asked again.

No reply.

The fury was evident in the professor's tone and face. Despite all that, the student did not reply.

"Hey...the professor is speaking to you, you should reply." Robert advised.

Only then did the student turn away from the window and faced the professor. Her questioning face plainly stated "What do you want?"

Seeing this the professor erupted,

"You disrespectful brat. I don't need students like you! Get out of my class!"

To the professor's dismay, the student did not even apologize, she just quitely left the class.

"You....good! Don't even bother attending my next class. Let's see how you pass the examination next month." The professor said.

"Professor, isn't that too harsh? She won't be able to pass without your help." Robert exclaimed.

"Enough Robert. What humanity needs are talented and hard working mages. Not lazy brats her. Now, focus on your meditation, you must pass the examination with flying colours."

"Yes professor." Robert said while glancing at the student's departing figure.
