11 The Coyotes Attack

After seeing the coyotes enter the apartment building, Cassius made his way back towards the rooftop door and pressed his ear against it to listen if he could hear anything.

Naturally, he couldn't. Since the coyotes had just entered, they were too far down for him to hear anything.

Still, Cassius patiently waited with his ear pressed against the door. Minutes passed by, but he still couldn't hear anything.

After two hours of waiting, Cassius grew tired and snacked on the tomatoes that he had picked up from his apartment.

Just as he was crumpling down the plastic container where they had been, a loud bang startled him and he jolted up.

*BANG*

The sound came again from the metallic door.

Turning around to take a look, Cassius saw the door tremble as a third bang came.

'Poop. The coyotes are here.' Cassius thought as he gripped his knife while nervously staring at the door.

The coyotes kept banging on the door for several minutes, but the door showed no signs of breaking down.

Seeing this, Cassius let out a long sigh of relief.

The coyotes seemingly gave up, since everything turned quiet, and even after several minutes Cassius couldn't hear anything.

Cassius made his way towards the door, and after a slight hesitation, he pressed his ear against it to see if he could hear the two monsters rummaging inside.

"Did they really leave?" Cassius muttered since he couldn't hear any sounds coming from inside.

Just as the words left his lips, a loud crashing sound came from the door.

Startled, Cassius quickly backed away from the door.

While the body of the door itself was still fine, it had started to come off of its hinges. The door had become slightly tilted and, with a few more hits, it would probably come crashing down.

Seeing this, Cassius racked his brain to come up with a solution. He couldn't just wait here like a sitting duck until the door gave in.

Glancing at the fire escape, Cassius thought of running but quickly discarded that thought. Who knew how many beasts like these two were waiting for him out on the streets?

No, the safest place was on the roof. He simply had to figure out how to kill those two monsters.

Taking out the keys from his pocket, Cassius cautiously made his way to the door. He placed the key inside the lock just as another hit landed on the door.

Cassius pressed his ear against the door and waited quietly. Soon he could hear footsteps dashing towards him.

As the steps grew closer, Cassius quickly opened up the door.

Seeing a coyote fly past him with wide and confused eyes, Cassius slammed the door shut.

Turning around with his knife in hand, Cassius ran towards the coyote who had just awkwardly landed, and was standing back up.

Seeing the monster up close, Cassius couldn't help but gulp as he closed in on it.

The beast was at least 10cm taller than Cassius, who was quite short for his age being only 105cm tall.

It was also 2,5 meters in length. Its sheer size made Cassius who was rushing towards it, look like a toddler. Not that Cassius was that much older than a toddler.

Seeing the kid rushing towards it, the coyote simply let out a mocking snort, not at taking Cassius seriously at all.

Cassius reached behind the coyote and crouched down.

With one fluid motion, he slashed the coyote's two hind legs right above its ankles/hocks.

Feeling the pain, the coyote let out an angry howl while turning towards Cassius. But to its horror, it couldn't move its hind legs.

Alarmed, it tried again, but the two legs just kept dragging on the ground.

While the coyote was focused on its legs, Cassius jumped up behind it and brought the knife down, stabbing the coyote in the neck.

A gurgling sound came from the coyote's mouth as it turned its crimson eyes towards Cassius and tried to bite down on the arm that was holding the knife.

But he had already prepared for this and jumped back, letting go of the knife. After a few seconds, the coyote lay limp on the roof.

Just as he let out a smirk, a loud crash came once again from the door, bringing Cassius back to reality. It wasn't over yet. He had one more beast to kill.

Taking the knife out of the dead coyote's body, Cassius made his way to the door. Once again, he pressed his ear towards the door and attempted to listen for the footsteps coming from inside.

But even after waiting for a minute, he couldn't hear anything.

'Did it leave? Even though its companion is still here?' Cassius thought with his ear still pressed against the door.

Just as he finished his thought, a loud bang rang in his ear as the door shook.

'What?? But I couldn't hear even the slightest sound.' Cassius thought, alarmed. Cassius kept listening, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't even hear the slightest hint of the coyote's movements.

Soon again, the door was hit.

Looking at the state of the door, Cassius decided that he couldn't wait any longer.

He had to open the door or the coyote would break it down after one or two more hits.

Cassius swung the door open while staying behind it and quickly backing away.

Soon a much larger coyote than the last one walked out of the doorway.

It was close to two meters tall, and over three meters in length.

While the previous coyote's fur was light brown and grayish, this one's fur was dark gray, close to black. Its crimson eyes stared directly at Cassius as soon as it stepped on the roof.

Seeing the creature that was thrice his size, cold sweat started to form on Cassius' brow.

'Can... Can I really kill this thing?' he thought as he stared at the giant creature.

Fear started to creep into Cassius' mind and his hand started trembling.

As Cassius still stared at the coyote in fear, it started to make its way towards him warily.

As the coyote walked closer, Cassius had a hard time focusing on it. While he could see it in his eyes, he still had a hard time following its movements.

It wasn't because the coyote was fast, it was simply 'slippery'. While Cassius could see the coyote, his eyes refused to focus on it and the beast just remained a dark silhouette and blur in his eyes. If he didn't know the coyote was there, he might have missed it.

This caused Cassius to panic further. How was he supposed to fight a monster when his eyes couldn't see it properly?

Cassius kept backing away from the beast until he reached the edge of the roof.

With no more room left to retreat, he lowered his upper body and slightly crouched his legs, ready to jump sideways the moment the beast lunged at him.

But the coyote simply walked towards Cassius at a slow pace. It didn't seem to be in any hurry.

Cassius had hoped it would rush at him with high speed, so it would fall off the roof the moment he evaded its attack. But that didn't seem likely to happen now.

The distance between him and the coyote was only two meters and was shrinking with every step it took.

With no choice left, Cassius dashed towards the coyote, swinging his knife when he was less than a meter away from it.

The coyote simply lowered itself onto the roof and Cassius completely lost sight of it, stumbling over the beast's back.

As Cassius was falling over, the beast rose up with all its strength, causing Cassius to fly two meters in the air before crashing down.

As he was staggering back up, the coyote lunged at him with its paws.

Cassius dove to the side, barely avoiding the swipe from the coyote.

He tried to stand up again, but the coyote kept attacking, not allowing him the get back on his feet.

Cassius was getting worried. He couldn't let the fight continue like this. Otherwise, it was only a matter of time before the coyote would successfully hit him.

While evading the coyote's attack, Cassius quickly thought 'status' and put all the five points he got from leveling up after killing the first coyote into agility, raising it up to 25.

With his speed increased, he finally managed to stand up after dodging one of the coyote's attacks.

Cassius quickly backed away from the coyote, making some distance between them.

The coyote also stopped, eyeing the boy warily. The sudden increase in speed hadn't escaped its eyes.

Once again, the coyote started to walk towards Cassius slowly, while almost escaping from his vision.

'What is this?' Cassius thought with confusion.

This simply didn't make any sense to him. It was as if something was constantly trying to hide the coyote right before his eyes.

Instead of backing away, this time Cassius decided to charge forward.

He quickly appeared before the coyote and swung his knife. The swing was low, aiming at the coyote's legs.

It quickly stepped back, causing the knife to only slightly graze one of its legs.

Clicking his tongue in annoyance, Cassius jumped back, once again distancing himself from the beast.

As Cassius was racking his brain in order to figure out how to kill the monster in front of him, the coyote suddenly became as clear as day in his eyes.

'Aha! So it can't keep doing it forever!' Cassius thought triumphantly. Now that he could see the monster clearly, he started to gain more confidence.

This time, it was the coyote that charged towards Cassius. Noticing that its skill had stopped working, it had no reason to act so stealthily anymore.

Cassius ducked under the coyote's swiping paw, and brought his knife up, trying to stab the beast's chest, but the coyote tried to bite down on his arm holding the knife, forcing him to back away and changing the knife's trajectory, making a small cut on the beasts front leg.

The coyote was starting to grow angry and impatient. How could it not win against a small pup! Its pride was hurt!

Rushing forward once again, the coyote swung its paw at Cassius. Anticipating the attack, Cassius once again ducked under the paw and stabbed towards the coyote's chest.

The beast once again tried to take a bite at his arm, but Cassius had seen this coming as well, and slashed at the incoming mouth of the coyote, causing a deep gash that went from its cheek all the way to its mouth.

Alarmed from the pain the coyote quickly back away before angrily glaring at Cassius.

This pup dared to harm it! This small insect it could easily crush with one paw actually dared to hurt it!

Raged started to boil within the coyote as it closed in on Cassius again. This time, all reasoning had left it, and it simply pounced forward, intending to push the boy down with its paws.

Cassius quickly rolled forward on the ground, causing the coyote to jump over him.

Quickly standing back up, Cassius rushed at the coyote, who just landed. Like he did with the first coyote, he slashed at the hind legs of the coyote in order to cut its tendons.

Sadly, Cassius only managed to cut through one of the legs, since the monster was quicker to recover than the first one.

Still, with one of its legs disabled, Cassius was now assured of his victory.

On the other hand, the coyote was alarmed. This pup was dangerous! He had to run away and get help from the pack!

But as it turned its head to look around, he saw no way out. As the coyote started to panic, it forgot to pay attention to Cassius.

Taking advantage of the opening that the monster left him, Cassius circled behind it before rushing forth, bringing down his knife towards the coyote's neck.

The coyote became alarmed as he sensed the sudden danger, but it was too late for it to avoid the blow.

Twisting its body around, it opened its jaws in order to at least wound its opponent once. But this turned out to be a mistake since its open jaws were right in front of the knife's trajectory and the knife easily penetrated the monster's mouth and right into its brain.
