Enrollment (1)

Two hooded figures were waiting in line outside of a large city wall with many young people who appeared to be in their teens as well as the usual visitors for the capital.

These kids were here for the enrollment exams for the various academies. Even though the academies sent representatives to all large cities in every country, many felt the need to send their children to the representatives in the capital to try and show off their children's talent while those with lower talent would visit smaller cities to try and increase their chances.

This type of mindset was incorrect though. The schools kept the same enrollment requirement no matter where the student took the test while those who truly stood out would have their names known across the continent sooner or later.

The hooded figures waited for over an hour before it was finally their turn to enter the city.

The soldier who was in charge of watching the gate looked at the hooded figure with annoyance. When he saw the sword on one of the figure's back, his vigilance went up.

He had met many slave traders and other criminals who tried to sneak into the city during the academy enrollment period in order to try and kidnap children with talent but those who would not be missed by many if they were to never be seen again.

The soldier made some hand signs to some of the other guards around before approaching the hooded figures and saying

"Please remove your hoods and show some identification or pay 1 silver coin as an entrance fee"

The hooded figures did as was asked and removed their hoods but on their faces was a full face mask that still made it nearly impossible to tell who they were.

All that was visible was their short black hair with a red streak going through it on one of them while the other had long red hair. Their blue and silver face masks covered the rest.

The soldier who had one of his hands on the hilt of his blade, removed it when the masked figures complied but were still frustrated about the masks.

"And the masks as well, please."

The masked figures did as they were asked and removed the mask from their faces.

What showed was a handsome young man who looked no older than 16 with a cold, apathetic look on his face.

Nathan still had not changed how his face would usually look cold even after being in this world for over 14 years. This was due to how much the Esper trait affected him as well as the life he had previously lived. He also suspected that the innate spell had some effect on his personality as well.

The other was a beautiful woman who still looked to be in her 20s. She had a small smile on her face but there was a predatory look in her eyes.

Seeing that the masked figures were so young and a woman, the soldier completely let down his guard and was no longer weary that he was dealing with a criminal.

Just a weird, potential student who had a weird fashion sense as well as his guardian.

Nathan's aunt pulled 2 dog tags from within her robe a revealed them to the soldier whose job it was to check who could enter. Nathan also pulled out two as well but his were slightly different from his aunt's.

When the soldier looked at the tag, he was surprised. This tag meant that the woman before him was an adventurer and a mercenary.

'He is an adventurer at this young of an age? I tried to take the entry test before but I could not pass any of the 3 missions I was given even after serving for 3 years.

Magi and mystics are real monsters compared to us normal people.'

After confirming that the tag was real, Nathan and his aunt were let into the city without any further issues.

But before he continued walking in, he put back on his mask and hood before he entered the city while his aunt walked in as she was.

The guard saw that but shook his head. He had already confirmed Nathan's identity so it was no longer an issue for Nathan to dress as he pleased.

Nathan behaved as if he had been to the city several times before as he made his way through the streets and did not stop to view any sites or ask for directions. His aunt silently followed while appraising Nathan.

The crowds did not slow him down or impede him at all as he was able to easily read the flow of the crowd and move through it as he pleased.

'Good. This kid is so good. If only he would come and take over for the family. I don't wanna end up leading it and my sister already ran away. Maybe I should just run away too and let one of our cousin's take over.'

It was only 30 minutes later when they arrived in front of an inn called the [Witch's Hut] did they stop and enter.

Inside, the building was nothing like the name would suggest. This was a high-class inn in the city that was known for its good reputation.

Many inns would overbook or 'lose' reservations during the enrollment period but this was one of the few inns in the city that had the reputation of never doing such things. Which made even more people try to get into it.

As he made his way to the front counter, he realized that there was a group of 5 in front of him. He also noticed that his aunt broke off and went to take a seat in the lobby while he checked them in.

It seemed like 4 of them were around his age and would be joining the enrollment process while the old man who was with them was their guardian.

3 of the youngsters seemed to be arguing and yelling about the number of rooms but the clerk at the front desk seemed unaffected by them.

It was not the first time that something like this would happen.

Many nobles would try to show off to magus they thought had high potential or were attractive and try to get an extra room at the last second without realizing that their parents reserved their spots months or even a year in advance.

Even Nathan had come with his mother about 7 months ago in order to ensure that they had a room ready for him during the enrollment period.

The group kept yelling and arguing for over 5 minutes about how they deserved an extra room but Nathan was starting to get annoyed.

He walked up to the counter and said

"Nathan Guri checking in. I have a room here."
