The same clerk was at the front desk of the Madison, though not a flicker of recognition registered in his eyes when Joe approached him. “Can I help you?” he asked.

Pulling a folded ten-dollar bill from his wallet, Joe slid it across the counter. “I’m looking for someone who checked in here tonight. Young guy, slim, dark hair.”

When Joe gave the alias Carlo was using, the clerk frowned, though he pocketed the money discreetly. “I’m sorry, sir, he left already.”

“He checked out?” Then where was he? Had he misunderstood Joe’s instructions? Had he changed his mind after everything they’d talked about?

“Yes, but it was the oddest thing.”
