We got back onto the road. Alert most of the time, we had no other choice but to keep a lookout. Danger surrounded us like goldfish around bloodworm. We were hunted.
The city area seemed great, safer honestly.
"Here we go," Edward got off his seat to look at me working away.
I still wanted to pass my examinations you know?
"Gas station." He pulled my hand.
"Alright alright," I placed down my pens and took a quick look and inhaled the sounds around me.
We seem to be quite safe. The gas station was quite packed too. We bought extra gas and did a quick refill. Made sure the tires were good to go and even got a shit ton of snacks.
God finally, extra food. We have been living off leftovers for quite sometime now.
We returned to the van and packed everything nicely. Cup noodles and more instant noodles were beautifully packed into a wall. The sight of it made me happy. Food. You really do not know the importance of it until you have to scavenge for it.
"Everything packed?" He asked.
I nodded placing everything down.
It was already evening so we had to find a good place for the night. Hopefully in the open with large crowds. It must be very noisy and well known. That was to keep all of us safe, well both of us. We drove around, well, Edward drove around. From town to town my horrible navigation skills cannot really tell you how long it took. I felt as if I managed to see all four seasons with just one roadtrip round this busy city.
"Still no?" I asked Edward as we passed by yet another little town.
Edward shook his head. Picky. It was for our safety either way so I dare not complain, even a bit. He continued driving. He looked so exhausted. However, I had no wa to help. He did not allow me to touch the wheel at all. The most I could ever do was refilling the tank and locking the van up when it was dark. I signed over to him with my hands, placing both hands in a prayer like look and placed it at my jawline before tilting my head.
He shook his head. He still did not want to sleep.
"My love, it is already two in the morning. Let's get some rest. Or is your new hobby collecting eyebags?" I sighed before standing up to lock the windows.
Stubborn, he reluctantly swerved to the nearest patrol station for a good rest. We were in a busy are so many cars, up to five came in every five minutes to grab food or refill their tanks. A few caravans parked over at the side too.
"Looks like we aren't alone." I smiled before closing the window curtains and securing them closed with a magnet.
Edward gave himself quick wash before laying in bed. He let out a few small grunts as he laid down. I knew his whole body was aching however, I dare not bother fight with him to switch positions so that I could drive. You would not imagine how stubborn this boy could get. he was really something else. At one point, I considered his stubbornness almost his whole personality.
"Well, looks like getting a caravan isn't the stupidest idea huh," I mocked.
I placed the blanket onto his fatigued body very gently.
All he could do was smile weakly at me. He was so tired, my heart ached.
"Tomorrow onwards, I will be the driver for seven days. You can tell me the directions if you don't trust me," I attempted to fight him.
I only said this because he was too tired to fight now. Therefore, it increase my chances of winning. I had already fought with him earlier. I insisted to go o a shop to change our car plate number. Of course, he did not trust the shop owner but we did not have a choice. Right now, he was seemingly too tired to even bother fighting with me. He opened his arms for a hug. I got onto bed and held his head into my chest.
His arms wrapped onto my waist and his breathing was slowed down. I could feel is warm breath onto me. I slowly tried to match his breathing speed. It made me sleep faster. I slowly drifted off to sleep while his body warmth gave me comfort in the cold night. As we both slowly drifted to sleep, a part of me realised that Edward was all I loved now.
He was my weakness.
I woke up to the sound of cars just driving in.
"Damn these cars are really annoying me." I complained with my fairly scratchy voice.
I opened my eyes slowly, squinting at every second due to the light. The first thing I saw was pretty comforting. He laid next to me, half awake. Arms still on my waist, he took that as an opportunity to pull me closer. Needy.
"Love, we've got to get ready." I smiled.
He whined for a good minute before letting me go. I walked over to give myself a good wash and so did he.
"So how did their van look like?" I heard a voice speak.
"White cara." Another voice spoke.
That definitely perked both of us up. We were instantly became alert.
"Car plate?" The first voice asked again, it was quite low.
The other voice however, was lower and way more hoarse.
I took a quick peak out of the window, did not want to show myself. The two men were in all black. They both wore a leather jacket, standing net to a car with a familiar plate number 'Sil0152W'. They were eyeing our van. A white caravan, it perfectly fitted the description.
"EJ2930." The other guy answered.
That was our old plate number.
Now even Edward seemed scared. Ass the men approached our van. They knocked on it. Once. The twice. On the third time, it was harder. However, we did not make a sound. The men had no choice but to leave. There were too many people around. They would only get caught for assault if they did anything else.
Fear crept up our spine.
It ate away at all our hope. However, it only proved hiding in the busiest city worked. We waited for quite some time for the men to leave before making our move. We knew where we wanted to go, or at least I did. Touching the steering wheel, I stayed calm.
I feared that what we were planning, or what I was planning to do may not work in our favour. After all the car that was hunting us was in the hundreds. It only meant that there were way more. Maybe more than we could ever count. I was scared. Were we truly ever going to be safe?
