I stood there, my mouth opened, gasping for air. I felt all dizzy. I did not know exactly how to react. I went over to step out of the van just to confirm my constant doubts. At that moment, I forgot how to speak. As I jumped out of the van, I knew. I was not going crazy.
Well there it stood. The huge stupid house. The one with the most memories. It's red paint on the house were already peeling off. There she was. My grandmother, farming away. It has been ten years since I met her. I mean ever since my parents died, a whole new chaos entered. The story is quite long indeed so, I will not get into much detail.
Basically, Grandmother is a human. However, after my parent's death., I ran away from her. I did not want to cause her harm. Which humane person would harm an innocent human? In fact, werewolves were made for protecting humans. However, humans hated us with all their guts. It only caused war between both.
I left a letter for Grandmother before leaving. I was sure she still kept the letter. Even though it has been more than 7 years, I knew deep down she still kept it. I knew her character, she was quite a sentimental woman. Can you blame her? We grew up in chaos. Only when you do, you would lean to appreciate even the smallest gifts is appreciated.
"I have been watching he from a distance every weekend," he spoke as he placed his arm onto m waist.
"That' why you disappeared every Saturday?" I asked.
He nodded.
I held back my tears. I felt horrible. As if I had abandoned my own family. However, it was for her. It was for her own good. I'm sure she understood. However, I still felt irresponsible. My only family member that truly loved me I failed to care for. I was so disappointed in myself. I could not face her at all.
He tried to convince me with a hug however I feared of causing her harm. I did not want to cause her pain.
What if they track us here?
"Love, we have no choice." He spat the obvious truth right into my face.
Maybe it was his voice, soothing enough for me to freak out even more.
I listened to him and we entered. I was greeted by Grandmother who was farming away for he daily meals.
"Ai! My beautiful baby! You have grown so much!" She hugged me.
She did not seem as shocked or angry that I left. Anger was boiling in me, I hated myself.
She served me some pickled radish, pickles and mushrooms along with some rice. Honestly, beats having rabbits or fishes from the wild.
"My precious, I left some drinks in the fridge okay?" She left the room as if in a hurry to prepare something.
It was as if she knew that we would come. She was s prepared. Beds were prepared, food were prepared and now drinks were prepared. It was as if she have been waiting.
I felt like a horrible person. As if I was not enough. I mean, I was not enough. I could not even take care of my one and only family member.
We stayed at her house for a week, or we had planned too. Her house was pleasant. Food was mainly vegetables. All that we ate was grown from the forest. We studied and helped her in the garden. I cannot express how peaceful her life was. She lived her life the way it was meant to be lived.
Grow your own food, cook, read, sleep, throw your waste into the compost and new bowls were ready to be used anytime. It was all made out of coconut anyways so she could make a bowl anytime she needed too. Her clothes were mainly handmade. I mean, she had a whole room dedicated to making cloths and clothes. She had everything needed for survival, even weapons let by my parents.
She did not seemed fazed that her grandchild had came back out of the blue. Her whole body, soul and world was so peaceful. She adapted easily.
However, only about 4 days had past and we were starting to get paranoid. Grandmother did not seem scared. Even though I told her the dangers we were facing, she still did not care.
On the fifth day, a man entered.
"Grandma!" He trotted over to her for a hug.
He introduced himself as Leslie. Apparently he was the only sane close friend of Mother. He had black curly hair but not too curly. It was like a light curl. He seem to be a person who works out lightly. He was decent looking I would say. He was fit but not like a bodybuilder type.
He seemed to be really close with Grandmother. I was glad she had at least somebody to be with.
I was farming while everyone rested however, Leslie seemed to have noticed and voluntarily joined me. He seemed nice. Unlike Sky, he did not seem crazy or whatsoever.
"Need help?" He asked while pouring water onto the fresh crops.
"Have you been taking care of Grandmother?" I asked.
"Yep, in fact I feel like she is the one taking care of me." He answered.
His voice was deep but not too deep, it was so comforting.
"I know everything, your mother told me to care for you then she said that at one point I were to lose you and had to care for Grandmother." He explained.
I felt worse.
I felt like I was not enough once more.
"Why does she seemed unfazed even though I appeared years later?" I asked.
Honestly, I did not think that he could answer me. I mean, how would he know?
"Look, I know you are scared and confused right now but let me just say this, she knows a lot." He said while cleaning up.
"Right, time is up, I must go." He said while getting up to leave.
He then pulled me which caught me off guard.
"What is it?" I yelped.
"Word of advice, cherish the moments with your loved ones. Good things does not last forever." He said before letting me go.
He gave me one final look before getting into his car. He seemed to be worried and that did not help my paranoia.
He dropped a piece of paper which I later on picked up.
"Cherish your last moments with Grandma." I read the paper silently.
Well, he was for sure not dropping this accidentally.
