07 - Loaned

(This chapter isn't edited yet)

"It's me." Neo replied.

That made the inspector look at Neo doubtfully. This type of spell coding was too advanced for someone Neo's age. No matter how she looked at him, he was just a 16 or 17 year old boy.

"And who are you?" The inspector asked while raising an eyebrow.

"Neo Parker, first year student." Neo replied in a calm tone.

"Neo Parker, did you make this magic card?" She asked.

"Yes, I was bored yesterday and I didn't find anything interesting in the library, so I made this game to have fun with Fatty." Neo replied.

"The techniques used on this card are very advanced. Where did you learn this?"

"A girl in my class showed me a 'notebook' spell yesterday, so I was inspired to turn it into a game using that method of that mana frequency reading spell." Neo replied.

The inspector was shocked. "You learned how to use the 'notebook' spell and managed to turn that into this game?"

"Yes, the principles are very similar, I just had to change the 'write' property that the spell had, to 'move' in the game spell, after that I had to create a contact effect for when the ball hit the bar and a little dot display to make it a game, nothing much." Neo responded like it was the simplest thing in the world.

The inspector was shocked. Really, considering Neo's explanation, if the person knew how to do the 'notebook' spell, it wouldn't be too complicated to change the properties to what he had said. "Can I borrow this magic card? I'll give it back to you before class ends." She asked.

"This card was a gift to Fatty, that sort of thing should be asked of him." Neo responded as he pointed at Fatty.

"Of course, of course, yes, inspector." Fatty quickly replied a little worried, after all, it was only his second day at school and he didn't want to offend the inspector.

"Don't worry young man, before class ends I'll give you back this magic card." The inspector responded with a warm smile before turning and walking away. But as she turned away she took a small look at Neo, making sure she remembered the face of this young student.

After the inspector had left, the boys around her finally started talking again.

"Damn, the game ended in a draw, what are we going to do now?!" A boy lamented.

"I couldn't even play, will the inspector return the card to Fatty?" Another boy lamented.

While they mourned, Neo decided to say something that cheered everyone up. "Don't worry, even if she doesn't give it back I can make more cards and sell to you, each one can have their own 'Pong'."

Hearing this news, the boys were soon excited. They were already having so much fun just watching Fatty and Mike play, let alone having a game like that and being able to play by themselves, that would be even more amazing!

But after saying that, Neo felt there was a problem, he had no idea how much this world's currency was worth!

Luckily he had Fatty by his side, who despite finding Neo's questions very strange, still answered honestly.

After several questions and price comparisons, Neo finally managed to understand how money is in this world.

Basically it was a conventional system of 100 copper coins worth 1 silver coin, 100 silver coins worth 1 gold coin. On top of that there were mana crystals, but these crystals were very rare and only powerful people used this type of currency to buy extremely expensive things.

Based on the price of a blank magic card, which cost only 5 copper coins, Neo set the price of Pong at 20 copper coins. With 5 coins being the cost of the card, 5 of the cost of making the game, and 10 coins of profit.

A basic meal in the canteen cost 5 copper coins, so that was a price that Neo didn't think was unfair, after all, one person ate two meals a day, the equivalent of 10 copper coins a day, and a Pong game could last for longer of a week, depending on that person's use, after all, after using so much mana, without proper maintenance on the card, it would soon deteriorate, making it a consumable product.

Spells like 'Fire Ball' that were used in attack deteriorated even faster. For using that spell to do something destructive that could even explode, after using that magic card once or twice it would already be consumed by mana and turn to dust.

Having understood these basics, Neo and Fatty went to class together.

As much as Neo had a lot of knowledge of software development, while reading the 'notebook' spell he noticed that a lot of what he knew might not work in spells, while the spells used a lot of code he didn't know. So going to classes was the best way to learn this kind of thing.

And since learning these things could help him make better games, Neo was very excited to know what he was going to learn today.

"Good morning students. Today we are going to learn about the materialization of an element. The base spell for today's class will be the 'Liquify' spell, which in its most basic form can produce water through your fingers, but something different can also occur because of other factors, can anyone tell me?" The chubby teacher asked the students.

Quickly Kayle stood up and began to answer out loud. "If you increase the amount of mana needed for spell in the 4th line of code the effect will become stronger and the amount of water will be increased."

"Excellent, as young Kayle responded, if the amount of mana is changed in the line of code, the amount of water produced will be greater. This also works for other spells, however, this also has a problem, which is, the greater the amount of mana needed, the lower the cost-effectiveness.

If you set the mana needed to activate the spell to be 10x more water, you won't necessarily produce 10x more water, maybe for the Liquify spell, you only produce 3-4x more water." The teacher continued explaining, and Neo paid attention to class with interest.

This was something he knew he had thought of before, as in his previous world, code calculations were always accurate, but when it came to writing spells, the end result was also a mana dependent variable.

After a few minutes of theoretical explanation, the teacher decided to make a practical demonstration.

"Can any students perform this spell without the aid of a magic card?" She looked around.

Kayle quickly raised her hand, wanting to be the first to be noticed.

But something intrigued the teacher. Neo hadnt raised his hand. 'He didn't understand the spell? But yesterday he performed the 'Levitation' spell so easily, what's the problem?'

But as only Kayle volunteered, the teacher pointed to her and asked her to perform the spell.

Kayle had stayed up late the night before in order to learn this spell ahead of time. And seeing that she was chosen to perform the demonstration, she was pleased.

After a minute of concentrating on mentally casting the spell, some water came out of Kayle's index finger and filled the glass in front of her, which the teacher had provided for each student.

"Okay, Kayle, is there anyone else who can demonstrate the Liquify spell to the class?" The teacher asked looking specifically at Neo, but still he didn't raise his hand.

This spell was very basic, and he had already performed it the night before when Kayle showed him the magic card, so he didn't have much interest in using the spell again, other than he wasn't even thirsty.

But the teacher saw Neos expression of disinterest and knew something was wrong. "Neo Parker, how about demonstrating what you've learned to the class?"

Knowing there was no getting around this, Neo didnt say anything and just pointed his finger forward, making a large amount of water come out for a second, filling the glass in front of him much faster than Kayle.

Since there was nothing new about this spell, Neo decided to at least test what the teacher had said about changing the 'mana' variable in the spell and see what would happen.

Seeing the large amount of water that came out of Neo's finger, both the teacher and the students were shocked. They knew he had just learned about changing the 'mana' variable, but did he just do it in front of everyone?! And he didn't even need a minute of concentration like Kayle, he had simply pointed his finger forward and immediately water started spurting out of his finger.

"Okay Neo and Kayle, both of you perfectly demonstrated the concepts of the things I explained in today's class, students, please try too." The teacher said with a smile, after giving Neo and Kayle a thumbs up, making the girl's smile even bigger.

Neo found it funny that just like in the Wingardium Leviossa class where the little girl was correcting the idiot boy, in this class there were also people correcting each other's codes after seeing that something was wrong.

Unfortunately for him there wasn't much more to learn, as now it was just time for the students to familiarize themselves with the spell and the code needed for it.

Bored, Neo just went to Fatty and explained to him the parts that this friend of his was having a hard time learning.

Seeing that Neo was even helping other students, Kayle also started to do the same, making the teacher even more satisfied with these students, especially with Neo's proactivity.

But what Neo didn't know is that while he was in the classroom, the inspector had brought the 'Pong' magic card to the school principal and was talking about it with her.
