30 Transformation

Mousse watched Carlos, who was at the epicenter of an extraordinary transformation. The man was no longer just a human; he was a living experiment, the product of the R-1 human evolution potion that had altered him in profound ways.

"Mr. Carlos," Mousse began, his voice tinged with curiosity, "do you think that if everyone in the future becomes like you are now, could they be considered new species?"

Carlos, his body coursing with the newfound power granted by the experimental potion, paused to consider Mousse's question. Even as a seasoned soldier, the changes he'd undergone were nothing short of remarkable.

"But... does that justify wiping out all of human civilization?" He grappled with the moral implications of his transformation. The irony of his situation weighed heavily on him; he had been subjected to these changes not out of malice or greed but because one person had decided to end another's life.

"No, no, you've got it wrong," Mousse explained earnestly. "They don't intend to kill all of humanity. In their view, they're offering the rest of humanity a chance."

Carlos's furrowed brow conveyed his skepticism. "What chance?"

"Evolution."

"In my view, it's still killing. It's anti-human. Nobody truly evolves; they just become zombies," Carlos protested, drawing on his recent harrowing experience in Raccoon City to support his argument.

Varion, who had been observing the exchange, couldn't help but smile at Carlos's perspective. "I didn't expect you to have this perspective. Get used to it. Your experiment is about to begin. I can't guarantee whether you'll come out of it alive or not."

Indeed, Carlos had become a perfect experimental subject after receiving the R-1 type drug. Despite his reluctance, he had acknowledged his value in this context, surpassing even Alice in importance. Varion had initially considered cloning him, but Carlos firmly declined the idea. His concern was not just about the potential issues involving his father but also seemed to stem from a straightforward man's humorous quirk.

For Carlos, perhaps this experiment represented more than a scientific endeavor. It was a form of closure, a reprieve from the turmoil he had experienced, from abandonment by the company to witnessing his team members' deaths.

....

A week later, as Carlos walked toward the laboratory with Anjie and a group of security personnel, including Andre, he had one solemn request for Varion. "You promised me that as long as I'm your experimental subject, you won't harm Anna. She has a future, maybe..."

Varion casually replied, "No problem, I have plenty of other options."

Carlos fixed Varion with a stern look. "I hope you'll keep your word." With that, he proceeded to the examination table.

"Sir, the experiment is ready. Shall we begin the injection?" Mousse inquired, ready to initiate the next stage of this transformative journey.

Varion nodded in approval. "Proceed with the injection, and monitor his condition closely."

With precision, a tube filled with a mysterious blue liquid entered Carlos's body, and he clenched his teeth, bracing for what was to come. Oddly, he felt nothing except for a faint chill, leaving him wondering when the virus would truly take hold.

They say that when a person is on the brink of death, their entire life flashes before their eyes. As Carlos lay on that examination table, he couldn't help but think of one person: Anna, who stood just outside the lab. She was his tether to hope in this perilous experiment.

"How's he doing?" Varion asked, his concern palpable.

"Doctor, the virus is starting to infiltrate his cells, and he should be experiencing severe pain by now," reported one of the scientists, their eyes glued to the monitors.

Carlos, however, appeared surprisingly unfazed, and this puzzled those watching. What was happening within him?

"Carlos, how are you feeling?" Varion inquired, eager to understand the unexpected developments.

"Uh... a bit chilly," Carlos replied, his voice tinged with uncertainty.

"What's the infection rate?" Varion pressed further.

"Doctor, it's already at 40%," another scientist reported, their eyes fixed on the monitors.

As they continued to observe, Carlos's cells underwent a gradual and mystifying transformation. One by one, they were enveloped by the T virus, initiating a process of assimilation. If further changes occurred at this stage, it could only be described as a mutation.

"What...?"

As Carlos crossed the halfway mark at 50%, he bowed, and the agony etched on his face was evident. His complexion was flushed, and his body displayed visible cyan streaks. Muscle tremors racked his frame, and he writhed in the throes of immense pain.

"Doctor, his cells are reorganizing, which is a new change," one of the scientists reported, their voice trembling with a mix of fascination and trepidation.

Recombination, mutation, and evolution—these terms swirled in the air, each interrelated yet occurring independently. As the observers continued to watch, they found themselves on the precipice of the unknown. No one could predict what would transpire next: Carlos's survival, his transformation into an entirely new form, or a direct failure of the T virus.

"How much?" Varion inquired, anxious to keep tabs on the ongoing transformation.

"65%," came the update from the monitoring team.

Varion made a swift decision, "Mousse, inject him with AL Potion 1."

The mention of AL Potion 1 sparked curiosity. This substance, extracted from Alice's blood sample, held unique properties. To most individuals, it had no effect, but when introduced to the T virus, it acted as a catalyst, capable of both integrating and combating the virus. It was, in essence, a double-edged sword, extracted from Alice's own blood.

With the injection of AL Potion 1, Carlos's transformation took a nightmarish turn. His face contorted with agony, and he cried out, "What the hell is this? It's so hot, I'm so hot... ah... kill me!"

The intense heat coursing through him was a testament to his body's fight against the virus. Was it his immune system at work, or was this the influence of AL Potion 1?

With a sudden, ominous snap, Carlos lost consciousness, and the T virus continued its relentless invasion, altering his cells bit by bit.

"Mousse, inject another AL Potion 1."

....

"One more."

Five doses of the medicine later, Carlos began to regain his composure. His face was no longer twisted in agony, and the battle within his body had reached an unusual equilibrium. The viruses and cells inside him, along with the AL Potion 1 substance, seemed to have found a delicate balance.

"It's truly astonishing. They are actually beginning to integrate," one of the assistants marveled as they scrutinized the monitors.

The people in the laboratory understood that if the individuals here today survived, they might have stumbled upon a way to harness the T virus within the human body. It could be more than just a biological weapon.

"Doctor, his eyes have changed," another scientist exclaimed, pointing at the monitor. Carlos's pupils had transformed into vertical slits, distinctly non-human, and his body density appeared to have increased significantly.

"This appears to be a benign change. Don't worry; maintain the nutrient supply. His body is undergoing a transformation that redefines evolution," the head scientist reassured.

Everyone in the room watched Carlos with rapt attention, as if he were a guinea pig in their very own laboratory.

"Sir, should we be prepared for a loss of control?" Andre cautiously voiced his concern. The doctor's earlier remarks suggested that if this experiment succeeded, Carlos's strength could surpass theirs. In the event of a loss of control, the consequences would be unpredictable.

Varion pondered the situation and finally responded, "Well... be prepared. If he loses his sanity, we'll need to contain him."

With a wave of Andre's hand, a group of soldiers converged around the laboratory, ready for any contingency.
