1 1.

Today, was like any other day, slow and full of its own challenges. Sam and I have lived together for three years now. Her and I met in high school and hit it off, we've been inseparable ever since. I kept to myself, where Sam often was social and outgoing. She drug me to party after party. I usually kept to myself, drowning myself in my studies. Its just what I was used to. While Sam was popular and a party girl, I was quiet and introverted.

Sam had found a job working at a bar and she adored it, often coming home drunk and with a different guy each night. I wished I was more like her, maybe guys would actively take interest in me if I was. Honestly, men tended to overwhelm and frighten me. It's not like Sam didn't know that or why.

Sighing, I slammed my calculus book shut and groaned as the door to our apartment slammed shut and Sam angrily stormed in. She locked the door and kicked it, cursing under her breath.

"You okay?"

"No. The bar fired me. The manager said I was too flirtatious and a client complained."

She growled and I threw my hair into a ponytail, grabbing my keys. I worked at the bakery down the street, it was a sweet little shop owned by an elderly couple. I hugged her and smiled at her gently.

"You know, Tara and Josh need extra help at the bakery."

"I know. And I suppose that'll do until I can find another bar gig."

I nodded and headed out the door. I kept my eyes down, not wanting to look at the wrong person. Sam was a shifter, or what most people knew as werewolves. A lot of female wolves didn't have the ability to shift, but Sam was lucky and gifted with that ability. Having it made her any wolfs dream mate. She wasn't sure her mate would find her. She did as her Alpha told her though and stayed on pack land when we moved.

I hadn't met the alpha yet, but I don't think Sam told him I had moved with her here on pack lands. She said her Alpha was the strongest, most powerful and feared Alpha in the werewolf world and she would tell him when she felt it was safe. Sighing, I walked into the bakery and grabbed my apron, headed to the kitchen. I loved being back here, baking and ignoring the world. I absolutely hated working the floor but with the Jones being short staffed, I did both.

"Good morning, dear."

"Good morning, Mrs. Jones. I'm just finishing up some scones before I start working the floor for a bit."

"Good. Be careful today, we have some of the higher ranking pack members coming and they don't know you know yet."

"Yes ma'am."

I whispered and swiped my hand across my cheek, singing quietly. I put the scones in the oven and washed my hands. I rushed to the cafe floor and sighed when I saw how busy it was. I started running over to a table and jotting orders down.

"You can't even clean up properly here, you stupid human?!"

A shrill voice rang out and I fliniched. Carla Richards. She was evil, skanky and spoiled. Sam told me she was the Alphas current plaything and was trying to get him to mark her as his Luna, but so far the Alpha had refused. Carla somehow had put it together that I knew what her and Sam were. I quickly wiped the flour from my hair and cheek and glared at her, she made it her goal to make my life a living hell.

"What can I get you, Ms. Richards?"

I smiled as politely as I could at the evil woman and waited.

"Hmm... A blueberry scone, and a nonfat late."

"Alright. It'll be up soon."

I turned on my heel swiftly to walk away and smacked right into a wall of muscle. I froze and could hear Carla gasp, astounded at my ungraceful attempt to get away from her.

"Are you okay, Beta Thomas?"

"Yes. Carla. Are you okay, Miss?"

"I'm fine. I'm sorry."

I mumbled and looked away from him. There must be a pack meeting today. Which meant the Alpha may come in at some point to get a bite to eat. Sam walked in, glaring at Carlas hand on my arm. I winced as her nails dug in, drawing some blood.

"Watch where you're going, human."

She sneered and Sam ran over, snatching her hand off my arm. I looked at her grateful and rubbed my arm. Sam glared at Carla and their Beta stepped between the two women.

"Ladies. Now is not the time. The Alpha just got back from the council meeting. There are also people who, don't know present. So behave. Both of you."

He glared mostly in Carlas direction. I ran off and started grabbing food for orders. Once all the weres were gone, and it was about five, I was cleaning up everything from the day when the bell on the door dinged.

"We're closed!"

I said loudly hoping they would leave and I could finish and go home.

"HOW DARE YOU GET ME IN TROUBLE WITH THE BETA?!!"

Carlas' shrill voice screeched and I froze. She was here, alone. That wasn't good news for me. She barged into the kitchen and smacked me, hard. My head bounced off the wall and I slid to the floor dizzy. She took that opportunity to start kicking me in the ribs. I heard a sickening crack and I screamed in pain. I knew she had broken a rib, the pain searing through me. I grabbed my phone and dialed Sams number. The phone rang three times before she answered, just as Carla kicked me again. I was sobbing with the pain.

"Sammy.... Help..... Please. She's going to kill me."

I cried into the phone as Carla half shifted into her wolf, she was also another gifted female wolf. Sam growled and screamed something at someone and hung up. I knew that meant she was coming. I saw Carlas claws and sharpened teeth. She grinned at me, her eyes shining a sickening yellow. Lower class wolves had yellow tint to their eyes, if I remember correctly. Carla dug one of her claws into my stomach and I screeched in more pain as blood soaked my shirt. The door burst open and suddenly Carla was thrown off of me and Sam picked me up.

"Beta. I'm getting her to the pack hospital. She knows what we are, and Alpha now knows she knows. She was attacked by one of our kind, so she gets care from us."

"I agree, Sam. You also have to bring her to meet the Alpha at some point, be it at the ball tomorrow night or after the healers fix her. I'll handle Carla."

The Beta spat and glared at the now unconscious female were. Sam walked out of the cafe and began running. Id never seen her run so fast. I could feel myself fading as blood kept soaking from my wound.

"Ivy. Ivyyy!!! Stay awake!!! We're almost there!!"

I smiled at Sam and groggily tried to nod. Suddenly I was tugged from her arms by a woman in a white coat with a warm and gentle smile. It was then that I could no longer hold on to consciousness.
