1 Deep End

Chapter 1

"What's in the water mum?" Suzan's question came as a surprise to her mum as other kids were playing with sand dunes. Her mum wasn't aware that she is standing next to her. As a 6 year old child her curiosity was worrying her mum a lot. Her being always alone and showing interest in what her grandfather was doing in his business was something her mum Betty couldn't grasp and live with.

Their visit to Durban was for the grand children of Bernad to go see the ocean. As wealthy as Bernard was his two daughters Lilly and Betty's first marriages didn't work out and as they were working in their father's business men had interest in them but their father refused those men's proposals to marriages. That led to them having children with different father. Lilly had 5 children, 3 boys and 2 girls. Betty had 3 children, 1 boy and 2 girls unfortunately the other girl passed that's before Suzan was born. The third child.

Betty: "This is the deep end my child. This is one end you'd never want to go to."

Suzan's curious mind told her otherwise, people were in the water swimming. She has never been in water that vast. She once was in the river water back home at Sabie but was completely forbidden to go again. Today she's standing next to this vast water that shows no end and the water keeps splashing on their feet. Like her mum sensed her curiosity, she held fast her hand so that she doesn't run into the water. Suzan stood there and as she was watching she heard her grandmother's words in her ears again, "You will never amount to anything" You will be a slave of Lillian, Cyan and Sammy your entire life, I hate you, your father destroyed my daughter's marriage and you are the results" tears dropped from her face to her mum's hand that was holding her. Betty shouted at her for being a spoiltbrat, she didn't even ask why she was shedding tears. Suzan's grand mum Pauline sais those words after Suzan tried to show her her Grade 1 results that showed that she obtained position 1 in class. Cyan and Lillian showed their grand mother their results and she was very happy but Suzan was spat in the face and told that she is useless and will never amount to anything in life
