Chapter 16

Ash

Sarkari Islands

I bust through the doors at the medical ward and run right up to the desk.

"She's having a precognition," I said frantically, there had to be something wrong, precognitions weren't supposed to be painful.

"Bring her to a room, the healers will be in shortly." The lady at the desk said pointing down the long hallway. I found an empty room with a bed and placed Sofya down tucking her in. I sat down in one of the chairs parallel to the bed and let out a long breath. About two minutes later a healer came in.

"There is nothing we can do. It seems like she's having a precognition, she will be fine though." He said. Oh, thank god. I knew what precognitions were but not about them.

"Ok," I said. I stared at the ground as the healer exited. I glanced over at Sofya who was sound asleep, she looked calm and peaceful. I yawned. I got comfortable in the chair because no way in heck was I leaving and soon after I fell asleep.

When I woke I felt someone nudging me. I blinked my eyes still heavy with sleep. I looked up and saw the same healer. The room was all dark; it was probably late at night by now.

"What?" I asked groggily.

"There is no change in Sofya. She's still asleep but no harm will come of it, it's just like a long dream. You can leave now if you want." He said. I shook my head.

"No, I'm staying."

"Ok." The healer said.

"I'll be back sometime tomorrow." Then he left.

I got up out of the chair and walked over to the bed and sat on the edge. Sofya was curled in a tight ball clutching the blanket. Her hair matted to her skin with sweat. I hoped she really was ok. A huge ache was spreading through my chest and electricity pulsed through my body as I inched closer. I brushed away a piece of hair that had fallen across her face and pressed my hand to her forehead. She was calm, not an ounce of fear or pain. I relaxed a little knowing she wasn't in any pain anymore. I layed down on the other side of the huge bed and drifted off to sleep.

When I awoke Sofya was still asleep. A few minutes later a new healer entered the room.

"Hello, I'm Aceso, the main healer here." He said.

"You look familiar," I said squinting my eyes to get a good look at him.

"Well, I am very well known throughout the world." He said. I thought for a minute, then it all clicked. Aceso was one of the best healers of all time he has been around for hundreds of years. He dedicated his life for as long as he lived to save lives.

"You're the Aceso," I said.

"Yep." He replied.

"Is she going to be alright?" I asked hesitantly.

"Yeah, she'll be fine, it's only a precognition. She will be awake within the next day or so." I let out a breath I hadn't realized I was holding. "She'll be fine," Aceso said again. Then he walked out the door gently shutting it. I layed back down next to Sofya. I hoped she'd wake up soon. Then exhaustion overcame me and the darkness took over.

I woke up to the sunlight coming through the window. I looked over at Sofya. Still asleep. I sat up. A split second later Sofya jerked her head up and started whimpering and clutching her head. Oh no. Then she said, actually shouting was more fitting.

"What's wrong with me!" Tears spilled down her cheeks. I rushed over to her side of the bed and pulled her onto my lap.

"It's ok, you're ok," I whispered softly against her head. "You've just been asleep for three days." She shifted in my lap and buried her face into my chest. The feelings of pain slowly vanished as I stroked her head. She lifted her head and looked at me with her huge violet eyes. I read her thoughts. She thought my eyes were beautiful.

This is what she's thinking while she's whimpering in agony? Silly little aemon. Why was she never concerned with herself? A soft scarlet blush spread across her cheeks. I smiled down at her. "Are you ok?" I asked. She sighed, then said.

"I think so, the pain in my head stopped." Then her stomach growled. She was hungry.

"Let me get you some food, I bet you are starving after three days without any," I said. She looked at me with a little worried look. "I'll be right back," I said then picked her up and gently put her on the bed.

"Ok." She said quietly as I slipped out the door. I rushed to the cafe and got a plateful of food. Then sprinted back.

Once back in the room I set the plate down on her lap and sat next to her.

"Thanks." She said then dug into the food. She scarfed the whole plate down in just a few minutes. I picked up the plate and stood up.

"I'll go get the healer, ok?" I said. She nodded. I looked around till I found Aceso. "She's awake," I told him. We walked back to the room. I sat back down next to Sofya and Aceso sat in one of the chairs.

"Hello, Sofya. I'm Aceso," Aceso said. Sofya's eyes widened.

"The Aceso?" She asked.

"Yeah," Aceso said, smiling. "I would like you to explain exactly what happened, ok?" He continued. Sofya looked over at him.

"Well, it started when I walked down some stairs then I felt this splitting pain through my head and I blacked out. After that, I sort of woke up but not actually. I was completely submerged underwater and in the distance was a castle-like structure that was on fire. Then I woke up with the headache again but it went away after a minute." Sofya explained. Aceso scribbled some notes down in his notebook.

"Definitely a precognition," Aceso said nodding then he left walking out the door. I wondered what it meant, an underwater castle on fire? Not something you heard every day.

"Do you want to go back to your hut today, the healers cleared you," I said, walking over to her side of the bed.

"Um, yeah." She said slowly thinking it over then nodded. She slipped off the bed and tried to stand but started falling over. I quickly caught her before her face planted into the ground.

"I'll carry you," I said bring her closer.

"Ok." She mumbled into my shoulder. Sofya looked like she was borderline delirious. "I like your eyes, they are like the ocean and sky, a perfect blend." She said, grinning up at me with a silly smile. I laughed, a grin spreading across my face.

As we walked to her hut, she fell asleep. Once we got there I carried her to her room and laid her down on the bed and tucked her in.

"Goodnight, Sof," I whispered, placing a kiss on her forehead.

Stella greeted me as soon as I stepped into my hut. I hadn't seen her in a few days because I didn't leave Sofya. "Hey, you miss me," I said reaching down, I scooped Stella into my arms. She gave a little yip happily. "Come on, let's get to bed, it's late." I walked over to my room and set Stella down. I slipped my shirt off and got into bed. I couldn't stop thinking of Sofya. How helpless she looked in the dream state and when she woke up screaming in pain. I wished I could do something to help but I was just as useless as I had been when Alek took my brother.
