Well, that was a harsh transition, and now here I am in a blindingly white void! "ARE YOU KIDDING ME?" I yelled into the nothingness, the sheer absurdity of it all echoing back at me.

At least the color change from the previous void provided a slight relief. Its stark blackness had cast a pall of gloom. But now, a new noise interrupted my musings.

"Beep... Beep... Calibrating system... Please wait... Loading 1%... 35%... 50%... 80%... 87%... ERROR!!! ERROR!!!! Rebooting. Please wait. Thank you."

This was oddly reminiscent of the speculative fiction I often read, though I couldn't recall any instance where the protagonist had to deal with a broken system. Yes, I admit, I'm a bit of a geek.

"Beep.... host soul is too strong. System can't integrate with host soul. System can't contact previous owner. Host is recognized as new owner. Requesting permission to fuse with soul?"

Now that was intriguing!

I inquired, "What's the difference between integration and fusion?"

"Beep... Integration would restrict the system's use to a single life. If the host dies and reincarnates, the system is removed, and memories of the previous life are lost. Fusion, on the other hand, allows the system to reincarnate with the host, preserving memories, skills, and abilities, though host levels will be reset, and some skills locked until the host's body can accommodate them."

That was a lot to take in, but it seemed that Mr. Voice had planned to use the system against me. Crafty!

I resolved, "Yes, fuse with my soul."

Meanwhile, back in the void, Mr. Voice was fuming!

Mr. Voice cursed, "SON OF A... HOW DID THAT NOT WORK? I SHOULD HAVE BEEN PULLED WITH HIM! AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"

And, would you believe it? I'm still stuck in this luminescent white room when I wake up again.

"Beep... Beep... Calibrating system... Please wait... Loading 1%... 35%... 50%... 80%... 100%... Ting! Successfully Fused with New Owner."

Relieved, I asked, "So what do I do now? I'm still in this white void."

"Beep.. You're in the veil. You can choose the world you'll be reincarnated into. Note: You cannot enter a new world until you complete the main quest given by the system or die."

That's useful. "System, if I die, can I return to that world?"

"Beep... Yes, but only after everyone you have met, seen or knows of you has either died or forgotten you."

Charming.

"Beep.. Host must choose five abilities to start with. These are permanent and will accompany you from life to life. You may gain more in your new life but may lose them upon death or leaving the universe."

Well, that's a challenge. And no, I won't choose Saiyan abilities; it's not a real option. So, here are my choices:

"Beep..... Processing. Please wait... Granted. Please adjust your body; this will be the only time you can do it, and you will maintain this form forever."

No pressure, then. I chose to have jet black hair reminiscent of the void, and sky blue eyes. A few more personal adjustments, and I was ready.

"I'm done."

That's a tough choice. Eragon's world is familiar, but I've only watched the anime of The Irregular At Magic High School. Let's start with the known. Eragon it is.
