The Governor's Son

Ify had been with her aunt in Abuja for over two weeks. She was already bored. All she ever does is talk with her aunt, accompany her to meetings where she gets to see older women like her aunt, people she can’t even relate with. Then they go shopping once in five days. But she was tired.

Ify took her phone and resulted to dial Lanre’s number. Immediately Lanre picked up she burst out. “Lanre!” She screamed. Lanre had to move the phone away from her ear on the other side.

“Na madness I de see so? Abi you are actually crazy?” Lanre asked. “Lanre, I’m not mad!” Ify replied. Lanre told her she knew but not everyone would. Then she asked her how she was faring. Ify scoffed.

“So if I had not called you, you won’t know that you have a friend abi?” Ify asked. Lanre laughed over the phone. She told Ify to not be offended. She had to explain that she has been so busy with a lot of work in her hands. For the past one week, she has been traveling around with her madam to go make people up. They have to travel with the decoration team, so it was stressful. “Don’t mind me jhoor”. Lanre said to Ify.

After she was done explaining, she asked Ify how she was faring. Ify told her that she was okay but bored. Then she told Lanre that she was in Abuja. Her aunt needed someone to stay with her since she no longer has her last daughter around.

“How’s your aunt?” Lanre asked. She missed the woman in a way. The woman was fun to be with, except for the fact that she was extreme trying to match her with her son.

“She is fine!” Ify replied. “She asked of you the day I arrived. She even told me to try make you come over”. Ify said to Lanre. Lanre smiled.

“I would have loved to, but….” “But what?” Ify cuts in. “Are you scared that you may see K again and may not be able to resist him if he comes after you?” Ify asked. There was silence on Lanre’s path.

“Lanre, I still can’t figure out why you had to reject him o! I mean, the guy came all the way from Abuja to Nsukka just to ask you to marry him and you refused him”. Ify said.

“Ify, do not start that right now. If he propose to you, say yes. If you pity him that much, go and say yes. I don’t have strength for this. Like how do you expect me to marry somebody who said I should not chase my dreams!? How?” Lanre asked.

“You probably don’t know who he is that’s why. If you knew, you would be begging for him to marry you”. Ify said. Lanre laughed in sheer mockery. “And who the hell is he?” Lanre asked, yet not interested to know. Just then Mrs. Okafor came into Ify’s room. “Ify, time to go. It’s the birthday of the Governor’s son, I wouldn’t want you to miss it”. Mrs Okafor said.
