4 Chapter Three.

At 21:00pm Jake was woken up by his mom who was bringin him come dinner. She had no idea of the events that had happened throughout the day but soon came to find out by receiving an email from the school that Jake did not write the Spanish test that he was set write. She walked in his room and placed his plate of food on his study desk.

“Jake” she said with her arms crossed and staring at what seemed to be a lifeless body that was just flung on the bed carelessly.

“Jake!” she yelled.

“W-what? What’s wrong” with eyes half open and a pillow over his head.

“What’s wrong is that I just received and email from your teacher telling me that you had failed to show up for your Spanish test today. Do you mind telling me why Jake” she said frustrated as ever.

“Oh, that” he said still half asleep.

“Yes Jake, that!” she yelled, still waiting for a response.

Jake got up and stared at her with a nervous smile on his face.

“Promise you won’t get mad.” He said, hoping to get a bit of sympathy from his mother.

“Jake!” she yelled.

Hailey walked in at that very moment as she had promised Jake to come see him early on. Unintended, she interrupted Diane. She had already figured out what they were arguing about as she also received an email about the test just as she was making her way to Jakes house.

“Miss Harper” Hailey said.

Diane got a slight scare and jumped vaguely into the air.

“oh my word Hailey. You gave me such a fright. What are you doing here?” she said as she held her chest, and marginally bent over.

“I came to see Jake, I heard you yelling as I walked up the stairs. I figured it was about the Spanish test. I just wanted to apologise on Jake’s behalf, it was my fault he missed that test, I really didn’t mean for it to happen” She said, as calm as ever, still looking a bit unhappy than usual though.

“I’m sorry, I don’t quite follow.” Diane responded with a muddled look on her face.

Hailey sat down next to Jake and took a deep breath. She explained everything word for word from the moment they left for school that very morning, Diane Looked confused halfway through it but she continued to listen. As soon as Hailey had finished explaining herself Diane had a blank look written all over her face. Not knowing what to say she stayed silent, her brain still trying to make sense of what she was told. Jake looked at her trying to get her attention so she could say something sensible and not make Hailey feel bad or seem like a fool for what she had just told her.

“of course, there is no such thing as ghosts and demons, but all of this seemed a bit too real.” Hailey said with tears gathering in her eyes. “it was real for me and I need you guys to believe me okay, it sounds crazy, but I wouldn’t be this terrified if it was all in my head.”

“Definitely sweety” Diane said while comforting her. “we’re always here for you, right Jake?”

“Yes” he replied.

“I apologise for yelling at you earlier, it just felt like you were about to make up some silly excuse and my patients was running thin. Not saying that what you just told me was silly, I Mean –”

“Mom, it’s okay we understand what you mean no need to explain” Jake interrupted, as he noticed that she was now losing track of what she was saying.

Diane replied, “Okay sweety. I'll let you two be then.” She turned around and left the room slightly closing the door behind her.

“What’s this?” Hailey asked as she picked up Jake’s iPad.

“Oh that, remember when I told you that were moving out in a few days, well I was doing a bit of research about the neighbourhood and I happened to come across that article. It’s about a girl who was found in her house past midnight with her parents dead bodies. No one truly knows what happened, but the people of the town believe that she was responsible of their deaths.” He replied.

“What about the police, didn’t they have a say on what happened?” Hailey asked as she stared at the house that was featured in the article.

“That’s the thing, there seems to be no police report about the incident at all. The article says the police, even the federal bureau dropped the case minutes later as one of the cops was killed at the scene while the girl was being taken in by the Federal bureau.” He said while swiping down on the iPad and pointing out what he just said.

“That is strange, shouldn’t they have let her go then? I mean its clear that she did not kill the cop if no one saw her do it, she had the police and FBI surrounding her anyways no one would be stupid enough to that Infront of them, especially not a 19-year-old girl.” Hailey said confidently.

“That’s the part I was about to get to, under normal circumstances yes, that would be the case but there was something strange about the cops death that freaked everyone out, it’s almost as if she did kill that cop but the story as how she was killed makes no sense. Apparently, the girl looked at her and the cop was flung into the air and I mean she went flying. The article says that investigators calculated that the cops fall was equivalent to someone jumping off a 10-story building. The blood splatters and the amount force that was used when she hit the ground below her was way too great for her to have jumped off any of any of the trees nearby, or even off the roof of the house.” He said to her.

Hailey gasped. “So, you’re telling me that this girl has powers, and the investigation was stopped because everyone else was too afraid that they might be next?” she asked.

“Yes” Jake replied. “wait, y-you said she was 19.” Jake responded curiously”

“Yea, and so?” Hailey said as she continued to scroll through the article.

“Hailey, I never told you how old she was” he said as he sat back and starred at her.

Hailey looked at him surprised as ever.

“Well, I think I saw it somewhere here, in the article.” She replied

“It’s not mentioned in the article Hailey, no one knows anything about her, the only person who actually got to interview her is the very same cop she apparently killed. Then she vanished. So how do you know how old she was Hailey?” Jake asked out of curiosity, as he stared at her.

“I-I don’t know Jake” she said.

She continued scrolling through the articl, she eventually noticed something, a house she had seen before. Not too sure where she had seen it, she showed Jake.

“Jake, this house looks familiar, but I can’t seem to remember where and when I’ve seen it” she said curiously as she pointed to a house in the background through the woods.

Jake Squinted as he could barely see the house. It seemed to be a few houses away from where the murder happened.

“Yeah, it does seem familiar” he said softly. Jake pulled out his phone and started searching through it as if he knew what he was looking for.

“Oh, my, word” Jake gasped as he turned his phone to show Hailey.

Hailey covered her mouth out of pure shock, she turned to look at jakes reaction on he had just shown her. It was a picture of the very same house that his mother and his himself were moving into.

“Jake, you’re technically going to be neighbours with her.” Hailey said with eyes wide open.

“Technically I’m going to be neighbours with and abandoned house, she vanished remember, and our house is a few houses away from hers so it’s nothing to worry about” He said with all the confidence in the world.

“Look, lets stop focusing on all this freaky stuff and actually just hand out and have some fun.” Jake said as he pushed his phone and iPad to the one side of the bed.

He garbed Hailey and gently shoved her back, both laying on their backs and staring at each other Jake gently put his hand on her cheek and slowly brushed it as calmly as the oceans waves on a peaceful and sunny day.

“I love you Hailey” Jake said.

Hailey had never heard him say such to her, well she has but usually he’s just fooling around and being playful with her, but this time it was different. She could see the seriousness in his eyes as he looked at her.

“I love you too, Jake.” She replied,

Jake tilted over and kissed. Not the usual kiss on the cheek but actually kissed her. they laid in the bed together for the rest of the night chatting away. The both of them didn't want to go to bed at all, so they stayed up in bed playing video games for a few hours.

Eventually, they both got ambushed by sleep and decided to actually go to bed. Hailey curled herself into jakes arms and placed her head on his chest. Jake gently played with her hair as she fell asleep, he soon followed and they both fell asleep into the next day.
