4 4 First Combat

We approached our first squirrel and above its head, it read

<Plains Squirrel> <lv 2>

<Hp 40/40>

I had read up on the potential monsters we might encounter in the dungeon, this being the most common. I just as humans got 1 point to every stat per level, but they only got 1 extra spendable point per level. There were exceptions of course with mutations and named monsters but otherwise, it was set. This one had 40 Hp so it put both points into vitality. Laural rushed forward without even trying to analyze it first.

She began hitting and slashing with her sword but with her lack of skill with the weapon she missed her first 4 attacks as I imagined my fire spear, well it was more of a bolt than a spear as I was unable to make a spiked tip, but after 5 seconds of charging, I fired it toward the squirrel and it was fast enough that it was unable to dodge.

Shink*

The bolt pierced on its body causing it to stumble back a couple of feet back. It was down to just 10Hp as Jessica went for its neck, a couple hits later and it was dead.

<+5 xp>

<1 Squirrel Pelt Obtained>

Not a bad bounty, but I was still 579 more till I leveled up, and 95 till my fire magic did.

"Did you just deal 30 dmg in 1 hit!" Laural exclaimed was shocked too, 50 mana and 5 seconds for 30 damage were quite strong. Of course, she didn't know about the whole mana thing.

"Ya, pretty impressive right?" I said masking my surprise.

"At least let me hit it next time, I want some exp too"

"I can 1 shot most squirrels so I'm going off on my own if you don't mind."

"Just be careful Arc," Jessica said as I walked away.

I gave her a wave back and went towards another enemy. It was another squirrel with 20 hp this time, so I charged up a firebolt to its max 10 seconds. I imagined it flying forward, but unfortunately, I missed hitting a nearby rock. The bolt went right through with no issue, but it didn't hit any enemies so it was a waste of 100 mana. It took about 30 seconds till my mana was full again, but I only had 5 before the squirrel's claws would reach me. I used a 20 mana wind ball to blow it back, I tried using earth magic but was unable to during other spells. I fired the wind attack hitting it and stunning it and knocking it back for a second, dealing 3 damage. I generated a staff out of stone for 60 mana, using it to bash its the squirrel's head in. my strength wasn't that high so it only dealt 7 damage. I used a 10 mana fireball to block its attacks when they came, only doing 2 damage per block it took a minute or so of exchanging blows before it died.

<+10 exp>

'no items this time?' I thought as I opened up my stat screen

Guess it only shows exp if I've earned some towards it.

I decided to put 10 more to intelligence and wisdom each, and then the other 4 into agility so I could move back and retreat if I run out of mana. Once they had been distributed properly I put a full 100 mana int making another, stronger earth staff to use as a weapon. It was still technically a spell so it had no rarity or level. I looked back at the others fighting and used mana vision. The brightest thing was Jessica's projection, then my staff, then the weapons others where using. 'I knew monsters and spells where made of mana, but weapons too? Is that what gives them level and rarity?' maybe. The more I looked around the more it made sense, all forms of exp and magic were made of mana, anything else could have mana in it but wouldn't fundamentally have any. I was getting very curious about what happens when my basic magics leveled up, Normally it would be a damage increase and a cooldown/cast time reduction, but there was no set amount of damage or cast time. The fastest way to level a single skill was to only use that one. Everyone knew I used fire skills so it was going to take priority. Squirrels only gave 10 exp but, the boss would probably give a couple of hundred. I walked towards the ruins hoping to meet another party to help me take it down unfortunately, it was void of humans when I entered. From the outside looked like ruins but on the inside, it was more like an arena. It was probably 30 yards each way before it hit the walls and the only things around were 3 large colonies in a tringle. The boss lay in the middle, sleeping.

<Empowerd bear-Boss> <lv 5>

<Hp 250/250> <Mp 50/50>

'now the monsters have mana to, is it because it has skills that require it?

Only one way to find out. I held my earth staff with one hand and charged a 100 mana firebolt with the other. It still hadn't noticed me until I stepped into its triangle after it was charged up. It instantly woke up and changed me full speed with bloodshot eyes. 'guess it likes its naps.'

I waited till it was a couple of seconds away when I fired at it and jumped up as far as I could, the bolt hit it directly in its eye, going into its head before dissipating. I stood on its hind legs with a mighty roar of anger and pain. The back of its head slammed into my body mid-air, knocking me to the ground as I charged up a firebolt to hopefully go through its other eye, blinding it. Its claws started to glow, implying it was about to use swipe as it spun around towards me. I use my staff to block, barely slowed it down as it went right through and into my chest. It hurt like hell as it knocked be back at least 5 yards as I skid across the ground. I used this opportunity to check both our remaining hp and mp.

<Hp 24/80> <Mp 322/480>

<Hp 163/250> <Mp 20/50>

This meant that it had used 30 mana on the one skill, and would need quite a while to charge it up again. It had interrupted my firebolt cast, so I charged another up waiting for it to run at me again. Due to its lower peripheral vision, it had to look around for a couple of seconds for it to find me and start running. I got to 7 seconds before it got to me and I impaled its other eye.

<Effect applied, physical blindness 10 (92 hours)>

Another yelp of pain as it began sniffing me out, it hadn't tried earlier due to the smell of burned fur on its face. I used its slow locating speed to make the largest, densest rock I could, launching it at the boss's nose that was pointed up. I went right through its skull, causing its brain and teeth to splatter all over the ground.
