12 Planning An Escape From The Complex

The basic logic behind the revolt was that since the world was probably ending, we no longer had to fight to defend the complex to live, as the radiation from the nukes pretty much guaranteed our death.

I didn't care much for joining the revolt though, I knew there was no way to get back to my family, and killing some guards wouldn't make me happier, so I opted to just run to the bedrooms before I got shot because some guards thought that I was also revolting.

Since most people had started revolting, one of two things would happen, one the guard's authority of the complex would collapse, and those revolting get to be free to die outside the complex, or the base's guards would regain control and start arresting people because we didn't have guns in hand, I'm going to go for the latter.

After going to the bedrooms, I grabbed my only possession (my pocket watch) from under my bed and waited for Josue to get over here.

As I said before, the chances are that he had already figured out what was going on. He was probably just finding something he needed; as I waited, though, I could hear the sound of staff being mobilized outside the walls of my room. Eventually, Josue managed to make it into the room.

"I knew you'd be here, so, how much time did I keep you waiting."

"Wouldn't know, I didn't keep track of time."

"Alright, anyways, I managed to get a walky-talky from one of the guards."

"Nice, but how did you get it?"

"...Well, let's just say that things are getting crazy in the cafeteria, and some people got their hands on guns by force."

"Fair enough, anyways, does the walkie-talkie even work?"

"Of course it does. Do you doubt that I could get the job done?"

"No, of course not; I just assumed that it could have been damaged."

"How is that not doubti- you know what forget it…."

After that, we ended up spending all of the time we had listening to the walky-talky; orders were being given out at all times.

There was nothing but requests for backup and screams warning others of traps for what felt like hours. Honestly, I was impressed by how much had happened; I would have assumed that one of the two sides would have won by now.

Eventually, though, we heard the intercom say something else. Apparently, none of the nukes made it past the midway point of the Pacific, and that they only managed to land in areas near China itself, so the US government was issuing all US troops to retreat. While at first, I was livid, I could also see that this was a chance.

There was no way that the US would take their sweet time retreating, so both Josue and I knew that they would have to loosen security; that was our chance.

After listening longer, we figured out that the US army would send the transportation trucks immediately and that they should be arriving in our area in around an hour, meaning that we didn't have long to hatch up a plan, with it being 11 pm and all.

The complex itself had two floors, the top one being dedicated to the bedrooms, library restrooms, an unknown room, and an eating area. In contrast, the bottom floor had the entrances to the outside, the armory, the guard staffroom, the entrance to the missile launchers, and what I can only assume is the most secure form of communication in the facility.

Currently, most of the guards seemed to be focused on fighting the revolting 'residents' located near the cafeteria and the library. As for why we didn't find said forces in the dorms, it was because the forces there had been neutralized already by the 'residents.'

We ended up deciding that the only shot we had at escape was trying to get to the Guard staffroom, as that was the only one of the two elevators that should still be working by now. As for how we would do that, it would simply be by sneaking into the library and stealing one of the guard uniforms from the dead bodies.

Of course, we weren't counting on the guard uniforms working for the entire time as that would just not happen because, at some point, we would have to slow down our movement not to raise suspicion.

When that happened, chances are we would be found out, as I'm pretty sure the guards would recognize it when a new guard magically appeared out of nowhere.

The reason why we had to get the uniforms was to get the key card inside of them. That way, you know, we could use the elevator.

After that, though, we would just have to wing it, as after we left the elevator, we could only navigate through the guard's area, and we had never even gotten to see that area of the building before.

Everything went surprisingly smoothly, as although calmer than before, there was still enough commotion for us to be able to sneak past without much trouble (The guards at the entrance to the hallway connected to the library leading to the elevator were either focused on shooting at other people or lying dead on the floor), while we were there I decided to go sneak over to the cafeteria, which at this point had been secured by the 'resistance.'

I then stuffed myself with food and water, not because I was hungry, but because it would be useful to vomit on command; guards were people, after all, and if I per se were to be approached by a real guard, I could just run to a room nearby and throw up.

Although it probably wouldn't stop the guard from following me, it should be able to give me a little bit of time, as nobody is completely unaffected by being near somebody that threw up.

With that, I returned to where Josue was with the guard outfits, and we changed into them. Of course, we got tons of strange looks from those around us (we met up behind one of the bookshelves that the 'residents' turned into a fortification).

Still, at the very least, since they saw that the IDs we were carrying around didn't look like us at all, they knew we weren't actual guards and hopefully wouldn't shoot us when we crossed to the hallway leading to the elevator.
