3 Chapter 3

The mad were truly fascinating. All we knew about them were that they were faster and stronger than ancient humans, they lived longer, and they were ruthless. They were able to communicate amongst one another in a language that we had never heard before, but it sounded animalistic and crude. We tried to learn as much about the mad as possible, however it was difficult to track them from inside the compounds walls. Our scouting teams had created tools to measure the radiation levels, and the mad emitted large quantities of radiation, which made it easier for them to track their movements. We had learned more about the impressive technology in my Scientific Explanations class earlier this morning, but as Professor Fyar droned on - I lost interest quickly and began daydreaming about whether or not radiation had affected the worlds oceans.

I looked forward to my classes every morning. I loved learning about the path humans had taken throughout History, and how a simple formula could provide an answer to even the most complicated questions. It was the only time I really got to enjoy myself. Sometimes we even got to watch the projection of stories, called movies. They are discs that ancient humans had collected stories on, and would watch for enjoyment. I visited the library often, and would pick up the archaic discs and antique books, and spend hours alone in my room. Sometimes, I would be so engulfed in their old stories that I would only get a couple hours of sleep. The lack of sleep made rising at 5 in the morning for my 10 mile run around the compound strenuous, and my energy would quickly deplete. It didn't help that it was an uphill battle, literally. However, the knowledge that after my run I would learn about antique civilizations was the only thing that kept my legs functioning. My daily training consisted of 6 hours of physical and mental exhaustion, every day except Saturday. Five days a week I would attend curriculum classes with all the other students. Aside from the exception of myself, The Few was to take 6 hours of basic courses, and 2 hours of Ability Training. All students took curriculum courses together, Immune and The Few mingled. When The Few left for their ability training, Immune continued curriculum as ancient humans had, sponsoring subjects such as Language Arts, History, Science, Art, and Math. They were the minds behind our species survival, and the Few held the power to protect us in the event of a dangerous situation. I danced across the grass of the courtyard at the sight of my best friend, Danyra, her dirty blonde hair tumbling down to her hips. She turned to me and a smile lit up her face, her blue eyes brilliant in the sunlight.

"Finally," she roared, a smirk coating her lips. "I've been waiting for like, two whole minutes. We're going to be late, again."

She nudged my arm, and clasped her fingers around my forearm.

"Instructor Kariah awaits," I replied with a roll of my eyes.
