1 Chapter 1

No one knows how the infection began, or why. It was as if a piece slipped in the construction of the world, and everything started to fall apart. Disasters became unnatural, occurring without a logical explanation. Earthquakes, wildfires, and tsunamis wreaked havoc on the Earth, causing nearly half of the population to perish. Those who survived the initial destruction experienced even harsher conditions - acid rain, radiation waves, and in due course, insanity. Scientists believed that the destruction of the world was their own doing, and that those events were our planets payback. The old governments had turned a blind eye to the corruption, and the state of the planet became worse and worse. Apparently the original human species had not taken care of this precious planet almost a hundred years ago. It is rumored to have occurred in an instant, the fragile balance of the world disintegrated and ancient humans had been forced to evolve. Most of what was left of humanity after the planets wrath, fell ill and grew envious of those who seemed untouched. A madness dominated their souls, and the need to kill became unavoidable, even amongst those who they loved. Those of ancient humans that were unaffected, deemed to be immune to the infection that had corrupted so many, went into hiding. Historians wrote that a very small percentage of the remaining population could now do incredible, unimaginable things that not even the top scientists of that generation could interpret. They opted to name this new and evolved species of humans, the "Few." We were taught that the immune and the Few gathered together, and formed societies within large facilities, similar to the compound we were in right now. These facilities were chosen due to being in patches of land that had endured the least destruction. The disasters still raged on, but less frequently than they had nearly a century ago. At the beginning of our adaptation, the acid rain and radiation waves burned us and required hefty treatment after exposure. But now, we walk freely amongst the raindrops without a hint of pain. However, the storms and disasters were the least of our concerns. The mad still roamed outside of our walls, and we were forced to live our lives within the compound.
