From Zero

As I walked down the road towards Filemi that my "Maps" app directed me to, I encountered more traces of the fight. According to this kid's memory, the ambush happened a few miles away after they passed by near Filemi. They ran until they encountered another division of the assassins waiting for them where they eventually died while opening a path for the carriage they were escorting and died there.

'You must have gone through a lot huh, kid.' I said inwardly as I looked at my rough calloused hands.

'You didn't have a name so I think I'll just call you "Kidd". That's what the soldiers called you too in your language anyway.'

After thinking to myself while walking and encountering more dead bodies to loot, I also thought of naming myself.

'Should I just call myself "Kidd" too? Nah. That's just confusing.'

I started eating the roasted chicken I found from the loot. It was still good to eat considering it was not over a day old. The ambush happened just this morning. The chicken was dry and had little taste. I started to reminisce about how the chicken would taste from a famous fast food chain I used to frequently visit. My mind immediately went to the name of the man that made the famous chicken.

'What was his name again? Sander? Right, it was Sanders. Should I have that for a name? No, but it would be a good last name.'

I started to think back on how Kidd and the soldiers died. They were kind of heroes.

'Heroes, huh. I used to like those kinds of stories. Even comic book superhero stories. Should I get a name after one of those superheroes? I don't plan on being a hero but I always associate their names with strength. I also want to be strong. Stronger than I was in my previous life. Should I use Pete from peter? How about Clark? No. It doesn't feel right.'

After a while, I finally decided on…

"…Wayne! Wayne Sanders!" I exclaimed while throwing my fist in the air

I felt embarrassment immediately afterwards.

'It's a good thing no one saw that just now.' I sighed inwardly

I looked down the road and finally got to where the ambush started. I saw the second carriage that had a more captivating design that one could tell it was owned by someone important or wealthy. It was turned on its side and had arrows piercing it. It was just used as a decoy and the plain carriage had the noble inside.

'Were they expecting an attack?' I thought as I drew close to inspect the contents of the carriage.

The memories of Kidd didn't have any information on what's inside this carriage. I opened it and found a large chest as big as my body. There's no sign of anyone passing through since the ambush so no one probably has looted its contents. It made me excited to see what was inside. I busted the chest open and found armor. The armor wasn't very eye catching but the quality, basing it off of Kidd's information, is very good. It's light and flexible but very durable. The armor consists of a cuirass, a pair of arm guards and a pair of leg guards. I tried it on but it was just too big. I hope I can grow into them in the future

I was about to be depressed until I turned my attention to a big bag full of, what appears to be, coins! I opened it and it was even better. The coins were gold! The coins I looted while walking up to here were plenty but it was just copper and some silver. The next contents of the chest I focused my attention on was a bow and a quiver. The quality was leagues higher than the current bow I have on me. I immediately replaced it with the new one.

I picked up the quiver and was surprised again to find another item. It was a dagger. I unsheathed it to inspect it. The dagger looks normal at first glance but it had an engraving on it that even Kidd can't read. The fuller and the edges of the blade had a beautiful design like it was flowing water.

"What was it called again in my previous world? That's right! Damascus steel!"

Or so it seemed as I don't know what they call it here. Damascus steel was said to be a lost art form in my previous world. Weapons that were made from it were considered to be very strong but still flexible. The katana, from japan, rivaled it in beauty and performance. I knew all this because I was interested in these topics in my previous world.

The armor, the bow and quiver, and the dagger seemed like they were meant as a set.

I was in a state of euphoria when I realized a major problem.

'How will I carry all of this with me?'

I went outside the carriage to see if there was a horse that was still alive nearby. To my dismay, I found none.

"What should I do?"

As if by instinct when I'm in trouble, I unconsciously thought of and looked for my phone. The screen appeared even though I don't know if it could help me. It was just a force of habit when I'm in a rut. While thinking and looking at the screen, the message app drew my attention and gave me an idea. I opened it to ask God a question.

"Hi. I just want to ask a question. Is it possible that you also gave me an ability to have something like a dimensional storage space?"

I got a reply immediately

"Yes. I'm glad you asked that question. Your phone ability also has the function to store anything using the 'File manager'. Besides the files that was already in your phone, you can also put material things in it. You can make folders to organize it. You just have to think of 'dragging' what you want to store inside it. By the way, only you can see the screen with your ability so don't try making use of it or you will be considered strange."

"Thank you so much, God. You've really been gracious in helping me. By the way, I've decided to call myself as Wayne Sanders in this world." I replied gratefully

"You are very welcome. Please do not hesitate in asking me more questions, Wayne."

I went to the "File manager" and I tried "dragging" the big bag of gold coins first and it worked! Next, I stored the bow and quiver I had discarded earlier. It's always good to have a spare. Then, I put the armor inside the chest and stored it in the phone. I stored the spear that was on my back. I even put most of the contents of my bag, like food, in the storage space.

'It sure is nice to travel light.' I said inwardly with a satisfied expression as I started walking again.

It was almost dusk when I finally saw the town of Filemi. I arrived at the town at five in the afternoon according to my "Phone". There was no problem getting inside the town. It is normal to carry weapons after all. I just had to list my name in the journal of the guards although I did draw strange looks from them.

'Is my face that ugly? I never really had a chance to look at myself properly. I did not find a mirror while I was looting the necessities. I guess I will have to borrow or buy one.'

I asked them if they know where the scientist that lived here was. They pointed me to the other side of the town and look for the only house on a hill that had a fair distance from the rest of the town. I made haste because it would be almost night time and I don't want to be rude and disturb the person at such a late time. I had no time to sightsee.

I arrived at what seems to be the right location. The description of the guards was right. It was far away from all the other buildings. There was a field of green between it and the rest of the town. It's as if it purposely ostracized itself.

I knocked on the door and there was no answer. I waited a minute before knocking again and there was still no answer.

'Maybe no one's home. I'll just wait here outside and wait for the owner to come home.'

I sat down on the porch of the house as I wait for its owner. I looked at the town at a distance. I can faintly hear laughter from the children playing. The grass on the field swayed as the wind blew. It was almost dusk. I watched the sun as it started to set and my eyelids did the same. I fell asleep. I guess I was tired from the journey.

I opened my eyes and what I saw was a face of an old man staring at me. He had a long white beard to match his hair. He had a nice posture and physique for his age. He was wearing a gray tunic with black pants and a white robe over him.

"Might I ask who are you and what is your business here?" The man asked with composure as he continued studying me.

I kept my calm even when I was surprised. I lifted my upper body and then fully stood up before introducing myself.

"Let me introduce myself. My name is Wayne Sanders. I want to apply as an assistant for the owner of this place. A scientist. May I assume you are that said person?"

"You are a very well-mannered individual in contrast with your unkempt appearance. Yes, indeed your assumptions are correct. My name is Alex Alegri. You can call me Professor Alex. Did you perhaps saw the poster for the job of assistant in the town?"

"Yes I did." I replied with a timid smile

'I cant exactly tell him I was sent by God. I don't even know if he will believe me'

"You already passed with your introduction. I just need someone that can help me with my work. I'm already old, you see? But my last assistant ran away. She couldn't keep up so I scolded her often. Will the same thing happen to you I wonder?" he said with a wry smile

'What a very direct individual to the point that it can be perceived as being rude.' "I will do my best to keep up. I have nowhere else to go."

"There is no use in making promises. We will just have to see for ourselves. Now, come inside" he said with a wry smile

'This old man is eccentric. I guess you have to be a little crazy for researching science when you can just learn magic.' I said inwardly with a stony smile

I went inside the house with an uneasy feeling.
