Beast Wave

Xue Chang didn't take it into consideration at first, but after the trembling appeared he realized something.

A demonic beast powerful enough to be on the verge of breaking through to the first level of Qi refinement, was not a monster the average beast could contend with.

Usually in nature, there were two types of animals. Demonic beasts and wild beasts. Wild beasts were like common animals except they held mutations that generally made them bigger or stronger than other of the species.

They could not absorb spiritual force like demonic beasts could, but their strength was not something to be underestimated.

In ranks, all wild beasts started at rank F and peaked at rank C at most. But because of their inability to absorb spiritual force, they tended to be the weakest among the C rank monsters.

Yet demonic beasts were the exact opposite. They all started out at rank C and their power were leagues above that of even the strongest wild beast.

Why was this important?

That was because these beasts weren't stupid creatures. Many of the most mindless one would be the first to be killed in the law of the jungle. But the smarter ones knew how to submit to a stronger force.

Demonic beasts usually enjoyed attacking and enslaving weaker monster that they could use to do their bidding. And the more powerful a demon beast was, the larger it's posse would be!

And when the strongest of demonic beasts gathered enough monsters, then they could create a beast wave!

Beast waves were the worst disasters a city could face. A strong enough demon beast could get thousand or even tens of thousands of monsters to strike at a city wildly.

Although beast waves could be filled with weak monsters, their sheer numbers were not something most groups could deal with.

Even a Qi refinement level ten expert could be killed when faced against a hundred level eight beasts.

Xue Chang completely forgot to take into account the possibility of the bear collecting its own personal gang. Although he'd only be able to collect C ranks or lower, if it collected enough of them, it'd be a serious threat to not only the nearby village but any civilization nearby.

And if given enough time it could grow into a full blown beast wave!

This was something he could not allow!

The trembling of the ground beneath them raised in intensity the more Xue Chang ran. He was sure of it now. The bear had collected a small gang and was planning to raid the village, possible for food.

Xue Chang wasn't sure how big the group had gotten, and he wasn't positive how many C rank beasts they had, but he believed it was less than five.

This was because despite being a powerful existence, the demon bear was still not something strong enough to dominate C rank demonic beasts and above.

After all, even monsters had some pride. And if the bear had any C ranks under its command, more than likely they would be wild beasts and not demonic ones.

Although he was worried about their number, he was sure that Tian Kai, Tian Hai, and him could deal with it somehow.

After explaining his conjectures to his partners, they became even more alert than usual. Even they realized the danger a growing beast wave could pose, and they dared not to let it grow any further.

Quickening their pace, all of them quickly arrived at the source of the trembling.

"Aw I knew we shouldn't have taken this assignment."

Surrounding them was a large crowd of beast that numbered almost a hundred. Although he could t tell for all of them, Xue Chang was able to tell that many of them were at rank E and a couple were at rank F. There was even a handful of D ranks included.

Freakishly enough they even had three rank C monsters! Although this was within his expectations, it was still a number that was difficult for them to deal with.

"Tian Hai, Tian Kai, I don't see the demon bear anywhere. It might be further back behind its own army. A cowardly beast i any, but that just makes it all the more dangerous. We have to deal with this group first before we advance any further, if we let them through, then it could cause trouble to everyone in the village behind us."

The two brothers nodded solemnly as they pulled their weapons out of their guards.

"My sword technique is more suited for the large number of weaklings. You can handle any monster I leave over Tian Kai."

"Don't worry big brother, I'll kill all of them first before you even have a chance to let that blade of yours taste blood."

Bickering back and forth as if they were competing in who could sell the most cookies, the brothers stepped forward and pointed their weapons forward toward the crowd.

Meanwhile Xue Chang unwrapped the large saber that he carried around with him. If it wasn't for the situation they were in at the moment, it would've been a hilarious sight to see Xue Chang wielding a blade that was actually larger than him!

Yet no one could laugh at this time.

With a threatening flare over at their enemies, Xue Chang said, "I'm going to kill a couple of creatures then find that damn bear. You think you two can handle the rest?"

The brothers didn't even skip a beat as they spoke in unison, "No problem!"

"Good, then let's begin!"

The three of them immediately split up and went ahead to fight their own battles.

Sword in hand, Tian Hai charged through the flood of beasts swinging and slashing his blade around. He was already someone who had been killing monsters for years now and was even given the rank of C!

Although his actual strength was only that of D rank in the past, his sparring sessions with Xue Chang changed this.

Being beaten over and over again did not help him improve much by itself. But while his strength didn't rise, his technique did.

Xue Chang was pretty smart and diligent when it came to training and battle. As such, whenever they sparred, Tian Hai and Tian Kai would always come out discovering something about themselves.

Whether it's their experience in battle, a new way to use their techniques, or even one of their shortcomings, they would always gain something out of the battles.

But nothing they obtained came directly from Xue Chang himself. Rather than the young master directly telling them what to fix and having them copy his own skill set, he allowed them to learn of their own situation and figure out their own solutions.

He did not set them on the path of another, but helped them find their own way of battle.

As such, while their growth was slow and minute compared to others, their foundation was solid and their potential was limitless in martial arts.

This helped them rapidly advanced passed their old strength and reach the level of battling C rank monsters!

"Nice job! Let me handle the rest."

Tian Kai complimented his brother while jumping out of nowhere.

Holding out his spear, he used Tian Hai's shoulders as a spring to launch himself forward.

Blinding lights flashed about as his spear elegantly swung around piercing the monsters all around them. Immediately killing their opponents.

Tian Hai and Tian Kai had a simple tactic. Because Tian Kai's weapon technically held more attack power than his own blade, Tian Hai would only seriously injure his enemies while his little brother finished them off.

This was the best way to conserve their strength, especially when facing a large group of creatures.

Already over a dozen wild beasts had fallen at their hands, yet the surge of creatures only continued.

An overarching spear waved through the crowd, knocking back several monsters back into their comrades. A silent blade swept past them slicing their tendons and eyes to incapacitate the fallen beasts.

While Tian Hai was focused on this, one of the D rank beasts snuck up behind his and tried bite the back of his neck.

Yet before it could even get close, a spear flashed by and pierced it deep into its side.

"Don't let your guard down, we aren't done yet."

Smiling casually at his younger brother, he thrusts his blade forward penetrating something just beside Tian Kai.

Turning around, the young spear master saw a D rank jaguar lying on the floor with an open wound between its eyes.

"Right back at you, focus now. Things are getting more dangerous."

As he said this, just as expected, the three C rank wild beasts finally appeared right before the brothers. Yet surprisingly, they didn't look like they were coming over with the intent to battle, but coming over with the intent to escape instead.

And only when they viewed the sight happening behind the creatures did they give off a wry smile and realize why.
