62 The Daredevil

Han Tengfei stared at the folder in his hands once more with an obvious smirk dominating his face. A talent was already hanging around him and yet he didn't notice at all. If it wasn't for Ji Li Zhao he could have entirely missed Hou Wei Yan and lash out for Jiang Yanyan's loss.

He never imagined that his first meeting with the Daredevil would take place in his very own office. This is all thanks to his dear Xiao Zhao.

Han Tengfei took a sip of his coffee and stared at the family picture he had with Ji Li Zhao. Indeed, Ji Li Zhao is his lucky charm.

A soft knock resonated across the room, disturbing Han Tengfei's wonderful train of thoughts.

"Director Han" His assistant, Zu Deming, called out before glancing at the woman beside him. He sighed and opened the door. "I brought Doctor Hou"

"Ah, yes" Han Tengfei immediately bolted up to greet his guest. He was known to be a really cold-hearted doctor, so when he flashed a smile, Zu Deming felt himself freeze. The ferocious master he had served for many years actually flashed a smile to new recruits such as Hou Wei Yan.

[ Did I eat a mushroom or something? Why am I hallucinating impossible things?! ]

Zu Deming rubbed his eyes repeatedly, but when the smile remained in his master's face, he felt like the whole world is coming to an end.

Hou Wei Yan fully walked inside and bowed down to the Director. "I'm Doctor Hou Wei Yan of the Cardiology Department"

When she raised her head and noticed Han Tengfei's warm smile, Hou Wei Yan smiled back the same way, not knowing that the assistant was dumbfounded to the point of no return.

"Please take a seat Doctor Hou" He offered before taking a seat on the couch. Hou Wei Yan followed suit and sat down in an elegant manner. Han Tengfei can't help but nod his head at her little actions. She was raised a noble.

"Would you like some coffee?"

Zu Deming glanced at Tengfei with an unreadable expression. [ The Director is offering her coffee? ]

His master has a lot of pride and he has countless reasons to be proud. He was never humble to others unless he sees just how vast their knowledge is compared to him. They must be on the same platform for him to be nice.

[ Seriously, what is wrong with the Director today? ]

"Ah, I'm okay Director. I'm trying to reduce my caffeine intake" Hou Wei Yan humbly answered with the truth. Lately, she's having stomachache due to her constant coffee getaway with Xie Na.

"Then tea perhaps? Or Juice?" Han Tengfei asked nicely. He wanted to serve Hou Wei Yan to the best he can in atonement for all the hurtful words he sprouted in front of Ji Li Zhao.

Hou Wei Yan stared at the Director and was taken aback by him. She was told the Han Tengfei had a temper and his attitude towards his juniors is exceptionally sour. But what she's looking at right now is the complete opposite of what they said. [ Was all of it just baseless rumors? Did they tell her that to scare me? ]

After awhile of doubt, Hou Wei Yan stared at his eyes and noticed that he really wanted to serve her something. As the guest, when offered something that came from the heart, she has to accept. "I'll go with Lemon Juice"

"Deming" Han Tengfei immediately called out. Zu Deming flinched but he easily regained his composure.

Zu Deming took Tengfei's empty cup and bowed down before leaving the two of them alone.

Once left alone, Han Tengfei observed Hou Wei Yan and tried to recall the memories he had with her in the past. She was first introduced to him by Han Yixue who kidnapped Hou Wei Yan from Xing Mei Yi during one of their class reunions.

Hou Wei Yan was only 5 years old then, so she probably doesn't remember him. And the accident she had which made her lose her memory must have wiped out every memory she had with the Han family.

Thinking back, Hou Wei Yan used to be quite chubby and her cheeks like a baozi. Her brown hair was always tied to a twin bun resembling Puca's signature hairstyle. The only thing that remained the same was her glistening green eyes which Xing Mei Yi always brags about.

Now that chubby kid is no more. In front of him is a real goddess, which his son managed to capture. [ Ah, Xiao Zhao is indeed lucky ]

"Did you summon me here regarding Jiang Yanyan and Lu Huan, Director?" she suddenly asked which made the old man snap out of it.

Han Tengfei can't help but smile at her. So she's concerned about that matter even though it was already thoroughly cleaned? "Did you do something wrong with them?"

Silence filled the room but it didn't take long for Hou Wei Yan to regain her composure. She cannot say that she wronged Lu Huan because his arrest was the consequence of his crimes. She wasn't the one that fired Jiang Yanyan as well. Her husband must have something to do with it but she can't accuse him because she holds no solid proof.

Her only downside was perhaps her sudden loss of control during her confrontation with Jiang Yanyan in the emergency room. "I slapped Jiang Yanyan"

A chuckle came out of the Esteemed Master Surgeon's lips when he heard this. My, she's quite an honest one. She could have hidden that minor thing. "I know what happened, child. Your actions are only minimal to what they deserve"

"Then, why did the Director summon me?" she directly said when she heard this. He already knows everything, and yet why did he summon her?

Han Tengfei held back his laughter and smiled quite strictly. "I know who you are"

"Sir?"

He knew she would act clueless, but he can't let her get away anymore. "Daughter of Hou Guanyu and Xing Mei Yi. The heir to Princess Xing's fortune and Hou Household"

Hou Wei Yan remained silent after he said such a thing. Well, it's no surprise anymore that he would know. She only managed to keep it from everyone in the lower department because they weren't people who would bother doing an investigation. After sighing, Hou Wei Yan relaxed herself and seriously stated her position.

"I am indeed their daughter but not their heir. I am now a doctor in Yi Lan, such title serves no purpose anymore"

Han Tengfei nodded his head at her answer. "Hmm, is this why you kept your background hidden from everyone in the hospital?"

She glanced at him before looking at her palm. "I don't want them to see me as an heir and stick around because of it"

Ever since she was young, Hou Wei Yan had encountered countless people who stayed beside her for the benefit they will get from her family. It was evident when she left for states. The people who referred themselves as her friend disappeared and now lingers around the fake daughter.

Only those whom she shared a deep bond with remained by her side, staying strong despite all the tides and lies Fe Rou Chao and Hou Chungsa created.

Now that she's returned with no one really remembering who she was, it's time to start over and not commit the same mistakes again.

She's no longer an heiress but a full-fledged doctor.

"I see" Han Tengfei stated with a confident smile. For a woman with such influence to forgo her fortune, that's a big feat not everyone can make. "But above all else, I'm interested in your other title"

"Other title?" Hou Wei Yan asked, quite appalled by his sudden statement. [ Another title? What other title do I have that's worth more than my family status? ]

Han Tengfei watched her closely as she confusion overwrote her confidence. "Doctor Hou graduated and worked in America"

"I grew interested because you graduated quite early despite starting late" he added which effectively took Hou Wei Yan by surprise.

Silence was the only thing she can reply to. This topic—she didn't like where it was heading.

"I received some files regarding your achievements and I was astonished by it"

Once again, silence filled the room as Hou Wei Yan refuse to speak her opinion. She's not dumb not to know where he is heading.

But what confused her was his source of such information.

After a few seconds of silence from both parties, a soft knock on the door interrupted them. "Sir"

"Ah, come in Deming" he answered and invited the young man.

Zu Deming glanced at both of them while he served their beverages. He can't help but notice Hou Wei Yan's silence.

Upon receiving her beverage, she glanced at Zu Deming and smiled warmly at him. "Thank you"

Her smile made Zu Deming blush a little and hastily leave the office. Han Tengfei can't help but sigh at this. They say a woman's smile is men's weakness.

He knew just Hou Wei Yan's nature so he can't reprimand her at all.

Han Tengfei sipped his coffee and directly asked Hou Wei Yan, giving her no break at all. "Did you know we went to America?"

"Yes, sir" she answered immediately, now slightly afraid of the cunning doctor.

"Why did we go there?" he asked, not wanting to let go of the topic. He's slowly heading towards his goal.

Xie Na, the gossiper told her everything she needed to know. "I heard you went for a seminar along the other doctors"

"Hmm, that's not entirely wrong" he smiled when he heard of this answer. Yes, indeed. Everyone knows that fact, but no one knows his hidden agenda.

Those doctors could have managed on their own. Yet, he personally went despite the protest he received from his fellow directors. "But I have another purpose for accompanying them"

"The US Daredevil" Han Tengfei immediately said, taking Hou Wei Yan by surprise.

"I wanted to meet the Daredevil. I was his fan, but he wasn't there" he added. "They said he went back to his homeland"

With Han Tengfei's obvious remark, Hou Wei Yan can't help but smile and sip her beverage. There's no point denying because she knew where he was heading. "I see, that's quite unfortunate, Director"

"I'm actually fortunate" Han Tengfei blurted out. "I don't have to travel far to meet the Daredevil"

He stared at Doctor Hou who was confidently sipping her juice while keeping silent regarding his statement. A smile went through his face as he placed his hands together as though intimidating the woman. "Because she's already here in front of me"

Hou Wei Yan can only stare at him and sigh. [ And the bomb has been dropped ]

[ Such rare knowledge, where did he acquire it? ]

She never liked bothering her parents nor her other family members, especially those from the Xing. For this matter, she broke her practice and asked her mother to conceal her identity.

When the Xing take action, they were known to be thorough. Unless it came directly from them, one will never know. Does he have connections within her family?

With this thought, Hou Wei Yan turned serious. Did someone finally betray and broke their well-established family protocols? "How did you know, Director Han?"

"I have my own sources, Doctor Hou" he answered confidently. This only made Hou Wei Yan feel as though a big trick has been played.

How much does he know? She had long turned her back on the business industry, thus she knew little to nothing regarding the current rulers of the game. She already detached herself from the war ensuing among the business giants and the powerful households of the nation. At most, she's blind to any news circulating the business industry.

[ Han? The Great Han Household! ] she remembered that they already had a rank amongst the Royalties even before she was born.

But t's surprising how he managed to bypass the Xing and acquire this rare trump card against her.

Is he a friend or a foe? Their spy or a spy sent by others?

"Why did you hide such identity?" Han Tengfei asked which broke Hou Wei Yan's inner debate. When he noticed her conflicted face, Han Tengfei suddenly realized his mistake. "Ah, just to be clear, I am not here to make an enemy of you or your family. I'm asking as the Director of the hospital"

Hou Wei Yan remained mute. Han Tengfei sighed at this before standing up. He walked towards his table and retrieved a picture frame. Once he sat back down, he handed it to her and smiled. "I know your mother well. I'm her classmate since middle school to high school"

She stared at the picture frame in her hands and trembled at its sight. Her mother had a huge picture of their class back in the Xing Mansion. She said that she experienced the happiness of being a youth during high school. This picture is a treasure to her mother and to her who had listened to all her stories in the past.

Slowly, she handed it back to him and sighed. "I don't want to attract attention"

"I'm not using that name any longer" Hou Wei Yan added as she remembered her main purpose of doing such an act. She didn't want recognition. All she wants to gain is the knowledge and skills that can save the lives of many. That's why she hid her abilities and disguised herself as the Daredevil in order to partake in the surgeries without becoming a VIP doctor.

She wanted to remain in the ER. If she had shown to the world her abilities, she'd be taken away from the place she longed for. To her, she belongs to the ER where she can use her abilities, not for the wealthy but for those truly in need.

Besides, she knew she'll never grow in a shady environment such as the VIP ward. She can only enhance her skills in the field where battle truly exists on a daily basis.

"I see"

Hou Wei Yan looked at Han Tengfei seriously. "I hope Director Han won't spread this"

He can only smile at her. He waved her hands at her and shook his head. "I told you, I'm your fan. I will do anything my idol wants"

"But as a Director, I can't let your talent go to waste" he suddenly blurted which took Hou Wei Yan's attention back to him. "I want to take you in as an apprentice"

"Apprentice?" Hou Wei Yan can't help but ask. She thought he got her point already. She wants to remain an ordinary doctor. She wants to continue serving those in dire need.

"You can work alone, but there are things you can further do if you're my apprentice" Tengfei stated in order to catch Wei Yan. "Besides, I need your help on things. Its no secret anymore that you're skills may surpass mine. I have tons of patients waiting for surgery and I strongly believe that your skills will be of great help"

"You want me to help with your surgeries?"

"That's right" Han Tengfei said. He knows the Daredevil's quirks. She never operates for the VIPs unless they are truly in need and not there for drama. "They are non-VIPs"

"Like you, I don't serve the wealthy" he added which seems to work well against Hou Wei Yan. "Well, are you willing?"

After a few seconds of silence and deliberation, Hou Wei Yan flashed a smile. "Why not. If I'm needed, I will surely help"

Han Tengfei who heard this clasped his hands together. He knew he could trap her well. Hou Wei Yan is intelligent but her kindness always overrules that.

"You remind me somehow of my son. A less troublesome version of him" he stated when he spotted their resemblance. His son, although dumb, always says such a phrase as though it's his motto in life.

Another skilled doctor has landed in his nest. Surely, he will never let her talent go to waste.
