As soon as the car parked in front of the mansion, Ji Li Zhao hurriedly went down the stairs, worried about his wife and scared of what Xie Na will tell them. Fang looked at Xie Na who kept on hugging her best friend even though they had already arrived. "Can you allow the boss to carry her?"

His voice made Xie Na subconsciously nod her head. She had already accepted Ji Li Zhao as Hou Wei Yan's rightful husband, but when something like this happens to her best friend she can't stop but doubt and fear him. The calamity that hit her best friend wasn't caused by Ji Li Zhao but his presence that night worsened the situation.

"We'll take care of her together" Fang said once more when she continued to cling to Hou Wei Yan.

His statement made Xie Na look at him and cry for a little. Ji Li Zhao is not the one to be blamed, because she too was a failure at that time. The thing they need to do now is to protect Hou Wei Yan from her own darkness.

In order to do that, she needs to put her trust in them and tell them what happened after Ji Li Zhao and Hou Wei Yan got separated.

Fang looked at the crying Xie Na. His heart somehow ached as her tears continued to flow and her eyes contained hesitation. Slowly and quite gently, he placed his arm on her shoulders and pulled her towards his embrace. The warmth of his body enveloped her completely which sent the young woman to cry out the guilt she was suppressing.

"Fang" a man from behind them called which made him momentarily let go of Xie Na.

Ji Li Zhao stood there, patiently waiting, but his eyes bore complete worriedness. Not only for his wife but for the crying Xie Na. "Let's get inside, Xie Na"

Xie Na looked at Ji Li Zhao as she wiped her tears away. "I'm sorry"

Ji Li Zhao merely smiled at her. "I should thank you for everything you've endured for her"

After he said this, he turned toward Fang and nodded his head. He nodded his head back and gently lead Xie Na out of the car. There was no objection on her side as they went inside the house.

The moment the two left the car, Ji Li Zhao immediately entered. His eyes contained unmeasurable terror and worry. His wife. His beloved wife had to come home in this state again because of him. It's painful to see her end up this way but Fang had to do what he did.

Ji Li Zhao scooped Hou Wei Yan gently into his arms before placing a gentle kiss on her forehead. Whatever happened to her, he will find out and fix it. The trauma he inflicted on her must have been complete torture. He knows he can't completely heal her but he will do whatever it takes to at least close the wound.

After placing her on their bed, he went down to talk to Xie Na. He needs to know. If what he fears is indeed true then he needs to step up his game.

As he was coming down, he saw Fang handing Xie Na a cup of water. His eyes carefully scanned the two of them. Their interaction sparked up his interest as he saw a gentle side in his notorious and cold subordinate.

Xie Na gulped down the water and looked up the stairs, quite concerned for her best friend. When she saw Ji Li Zhao, she immediately placed the glass down on the table. "How is she?"

"Sleeping soundly" he said before facing Xie Na seriously. He sat down in front of her, ready to take in what actually happened. "Who was that girl? What happened to Wei Wei?"

Xie Na gulped down and looked at him shakingly. "That was Jiang Yanyan, she's a doctor in Yi Lan Hospital who just returned from an American medical event"

"With Director Han?" Assistant Huang Xun asked when he remembered a certain dumb head. When Xie Na replied with a nod, he was suddenly left thinking. Han Yu Shou's father, Han Tengfei is a strict doctor. He only acknowledges those who really have the skills. If he brought such a woman to the US, she must be really something.

Fang didn't care who she was though. He was more concerned about why she attacked Xie Na. That story seems more interesting to him right now. But he can't ask directly. Somehow, he can't bring himself to ask.

"Why did he attack you?" Butler Gu asked after finishing his errands. He had already fetched the basic information regarding Jiang Yanyan but her personal conflicts with Xie Na are yet far from his grasp. He handed the folders to Ji Li Zhao, Huang Xun, and Fang Tao.

Xie Na can't help but sweat at his question. She was an adventurer, a ferocious tiger at best—but Jiang Yanyan is a true monster. She eats people after toying with them. "You can call us, enemies. Jiang Yanyan hates gutsy people. She considers herself the queen bee, and we are her workers"

"Yi Lan tolerated her?" Huang Xun asked with concern. According to her portfolio, she's the only daughter of CEO Jiang Chen of Mayu Corporation. Their company is flourishing but it's not enough for the highly acclaimed Yi Lan to tolerate such behavior. Her family didn't even make it to the Ducal House Rankings which is below the Regal Families, so why would they give her such treatment?!

"She graduated with me at Baise University. Her skills are formidable that's why she can do anything in the hospital. When you're a doctor in Yi Lan Hospital skills are better than background" she honestly said. No matter how bad the character, Jiang Yanyan is a great surgeon they can't lose.

But of course, that doesn't mean she could simply accept her attitude. They are not on good terms, even before college. She always stood up against Yanyan and she hates it to the core. "She came to my office to brag and mock me. When I didn't show any interest and was about to call Wei Wei she went on a rampage"

"That woman is crazy! She attacked you because of that?" Fang suddenly blurted out taking the men by surprise. Of course, Fang was surprised by himself as well. Slowly, he sat back down and coughed. "What about Madame? What happened to her?"

Xie Na who was looking down earlier looked up and faced Ji Li Zhao. "Before I answer that, may I ask you something?"

Ji Li Zhao stared at her for a good few seconds before he nodded his head. Xie Na nodded back before sighing. "I wasn't there 10 years ago when she was kidnapped and rescued so I don't know much. But I saw how she changed afterward. Even when she lost her memories of that night, she still mentions the monster she saw. His face was vague but she was certain there was a monster"

She paused for a moment before looking up again. "Are...Are you the monster she saw?"

The room fell into silence as she asked this painful question. Ji Li Zhao was exceptionally silent as he fell into his guilty mode. "10 years ago, I rescued Wei Wei alone from the kidnappers...I killed them...I killed everyone inside the room and she saw everything"

"Yes, I am the monster she saw" he truthfully said. He was the one that inflicted the terror on Hou Wei Yan that ruined her sanity. He was the one who made her see the bloody and cruel world. The brutality that she saw was the reason she needed to go abroad for rehab. He was the reason for her wounds.

He thought Xie Na would lash out at him, but she just nodded her head. After a few seconds, she sighed again. "After you rescued her, Wei Wei suffered PTSD*. She had recurring nightmares and irritability. Madame Xing brought her to the US for that reason"

All of them nodded their heads because they knew of this. It was written in the files they recovered from the medical institute that housed her. "After a few months, Wei Wei called me. She told me that she feels like someone else when she's angry and it keeps on happening. I later found out that she had a special case of IED*. Whenever she saw her loved ones getting hurt, she goes on a rampage like a wild animal. At that time she found it hard to control her anger, but over time, she learned to suppress it. Upon her return, Wei Wei told me...that it was not fully gone. She never managed to cure her IED"

"Split personality?" Fang asked all of a sudden.

Xie Na shook her head. "Wei Wei remembers everything that happened while a person with Split Personality doesn't. It's just her angry side on another level"

"Rather than a split personality, it's her defense mechanism" she added to make sure they understood.

Hou Wei Yan is human. No matter how good she is, she is still human. Ji Li Zhao's killing spree must have made her realize the importance of defending herself. To be honest, Xie Na is okay with her angry side as long as it doesn't go to a critical level. Hou Wei Yan without a defense mechanism is rather scary.

"It doesn't matter if it's her other personality or defense mechanism. In my eyes, Wei Wei is still Wei Wei and I love everything that's her" Ji Li Zhao said before standing up. Xie Na can't help but smile at his answer.

[ Why is he so cheesy? ]

Oh well, as long as he is sincere and will stick to his promise of protecting Hou Wei Yan, nothing matters. He can be as cheesy as he can get, it doesn't matter.

"I just want to remind you though, Wei Wei remembers everything but she will act like nothing happened tomorrow. She won't speak of it and I implore that you don't speak about it as well. Wei Wei doesn't like others speaking of it and as much as possible, she likes to keep her defense mechanism a secret" Xie Na spoke up, and just like Ji Li Zhao, she stood up and gave a polite smile to everyone.

"Fang will bring you home" Ji Li Zhao ordered as he walked up the stairs. Fang looked at his boss before looking at the others whose eyes certainly contained mischief.

Why does he feel like he is being set up again? And this time it's worse because it's not Hou Wei Yan setting him up, but his very own boss.
