3 02 | Chapter 2: The Letter

Adrianne kept her head high despite the constant stare and murmuring. It was one of the days where she has to go outside. To the world where you cannot trust anyone, and one mistake can lead to something more... disastrous.

Through the dark peek hole in her mask, she can see how the noble ladies whisper among themselves with their eyes starring daggers at her. While men on the other side, eyed her figure with curiosity and mischief. Adrianne stiffled a scoff.

Besides her, is the strict head maid, Miss Fletcher, who had been taking care of her since she was a teenager. Miss Fletcher was once called 'The Royal Nanny' because she took care of the royal family for years but retired once she was in the age of 56 and moved back to the Silvania household where she was originally designated to.

"What improper gestures from these ladies" Miss Fletcher mumbled to herself rather loudly. It was no surprise for Adrianne to hear her bash young ladies since she received the same treatment when she first moved into the household.

Adrianne bit back a smile when she saw the young ladies cowered in embarrassment. They continued to walk towards the Academy and went straight to their destination.

"Ah, Lady Adrianne" The kind headmaster smiled warmly at her. Adrianne bowed, "We meet again, Headmaster"

The Headmaster, Mr. Lorraine Glenn, gestured her to seat. Both ladies obligated. Adrianne looked at him expectantly. And despite the mask covering her face, Lorraine understood and smiled almost excitedly.

"I have great news from his teacher..." he paused and gave her a set of papers.

Adrianne looked at it and was shock to find out it was a letter written in an ancient script that only few understands.

"He had successfully produced a letter in an archaic language, and don't worry, I only read a few words..." the headmaster's voice dimmed down as her eyes were glued to the paper:

'To my dearest mother, Adrianne Silvania,

Isn't it great?! I can write easily now and I can even read a lot! aren't you proud, momma? Mr. Jameson said that I can be a prodigy!, I don't really know what it means but he said that it means I'm very intelligent. Do you think I can be like that at home? I miss you, momma... Mr. Jameson said that I can go after two weeks, will you wait for me, momma? I want hug you, I miss you very much. I miss Aunty Lia and Uncle Quinn, and miss nanny too, oh! and also Father!, can you tell him to wait for me, momma? I'll be there for two weeks, wait for me, okay?

Adrianne folded the letter back to its original form and smiled, her eyes glimmering in happy tears inside her mask. 'I miss you too, my sweet little boy.'
