16 Chapter 15: A Hunter (Jangra's POV)

I sat there, waiting for what she was going to tell me next. I knew for sure that I did not want to be a medicine dragon, those were rare in the first place. But I would not fake and pretend like I did not know, remember how use things properly. It was in the dragon code for this, you had to do your best at every task, you might not get what you want.

Socra looked at me and then began searching through supplies, either way, if I was too be deputy in the future I would have to know all of these, that was one thing deputies were always useful for. They may not be the best in every category, but they did know how to use every category.

My head lowered to the ground, I shook my head of those thoughts, odds are now that my father was leaving our mother he would not care about us, the proof was in there by him throwing us out. Most male dragons did but he was the leader, it would be made official soon.

Whenever dragons got married or divorced there was usually a small tribe meeting for any of the dragons involved, my body shivered thinking about my father leaving my mother. For a black dragon that did not care about him anymore none the less.

"This is rosemary, this is used to treat wounds, this is berry thorns, they hurt you but they are eaten to heal most sicknesses, such as a fever. The medicine drag-" She began saying to me. But my mind was in a whole nother world right now, I did not care about being a medicine dragon anyways.

She made a loud cough noticing that I was not paying her any attention. I did not even hear it and then she yelled my name loudly trying to get me to pay attention.

"Jangra... If you do not want to do this you can always be a cave dragon..." She said to me. I looked towards her and then nodded my apologies to her. My body shivered thinking about being a cave dragon. All dragons feared that and a solid amount of dragons ended up being, too weak or too slow to be anything else.

"I'm sorry, my mind is in another place right now." I said to her. She looked at me and then nodded before she began squinting her eyes at me. I then began to start paying to what she was saying, she looked at me dead in my eyes before she started speaking again.

"Tell me what I said first..." She said to me. My mind had gone blank, I wasn't paying attention in the first place, and now it was even harder for me, I wasn't great under pressure either. I choked up a bit of spit and then began coughing then I looked back up to her.

"Just tell me again... I wasn't paying attention." I said to her. She shook her head and then rolled her eyes at me and then she picked up the same greenish looking things that she had shown me a few minutes ago.

"Just as I thought... Okay I am going to test you on 4, I am not a medicine dragon myself, I only know the basics. Now this time please pay attention to what I say." She said to me. She had told me exactly what I had figured from deputies, she probably knew basics, to treat basic infections in case there was no medicine dragon around.

"Okay this is Rosemarry, this is used to treat wounds in case a dragon was cut or burnt, or hurt in a battle or some other instance." She said to me. I nodded to her that way she knew that I was actually paying attention to what she was saying this time.

She looked at me and then nodded back to me. The 4 things she had all looked the same to me and I was a slight bit confused. I knew my sister was fairly good at this, she had friends that were medicine dragons.

She was even better of a hunter however, and that is why she got that as a job. She did know a lot of things that I did not know, I remember her telling me about this one before, I kept a good thought in my mind to remember what that one was, it did look a slight bit different from the others.

"Do we even have battles anymore." I looked at her and asked her. She looked at me and then looked down at the ground and began shivering as if she was a bit scared. It confused me quite a bit, but then she got back to her pays and began talking again.

"If what that Yikla dragon said is true, then I think yes, this will be fairly important pretty soon, and dragons don't just get injured only in battle..." She said to me. I nodded to her and then she looked at me as if she was a bit scared which confused me a bit.

"Are you okay? Sorry I was just asking if there were any battles going on right now. Didn't mean to hit on a soft subject." I said to her. She sat there for a few seconds not responding at all. I wondered if she was doing what I had just done, her mind was clearly in another dimension right now.

"Yes... I am just remembering the last war, I lost my husband and my son... I am sorry, promise me to not tell Himla about this." She said to me. I looked at her a bit surprised and a bit confused. But it did feel good that a dragon trusted me enough to open up to me like that.

"Of course not, as long as you don't tell him about me sneaking into you guys meeting last night." I said to her laughing a little bit, she laughed a little bit back as well. But I good still see that her mind was still in that soft topic that we had just pushed into earlier.

"Of course I wont... If you don't want to be a medicine dragon we do not have to do this. Your father and I have bigger plans than this anyways." She said to me. I looked at her in her eyes trying to understand what she was trying to tell me, but then I just shook my head.

My mind was in a different place once again thinking about my father again, I could only think about what was going on with him and my mother. I felt so bad about it, I undestood why he wanted to leave, but the dragon he had not talked to in a long time.

She probably no longer had feelings for him and my mother was always so sweet to him and all of their kids, now she was just throwing him out like she was trash. He thinks a new war between the dragons would give him another chance with them?

Socra pushed up against me and then nodded for me to pay attention to what she was going to tell me next, she could tell that my mind was in another place right now.

"Sorry... I assume you know the news between my mother and my father right now?" I said to her. She looked at me a bit surprised but then she nodded to me. She pushed up against me once again to try and make me feel better. But I dont think anything could make me feel any better about the subject right now.

"Im surprised you already know, your mother wasn't supposed to tell you until your father made it official to the tribe." She said to me. I looked at her and then nodded to her. I knew it was not allowed, but it always seemed like the most important dragons were the ones that broke the rules to most.

"I know... It just hurts me." I said to her. She nodded to me understanding where I was coming from, I looked around and one of the elders walked over to us. He looked a bit upset which I was a bit confused as to why.

"You too hurry up with the medicine part. We haven't got all day." The older dragon said to the both of us. It was typical for older dragons to make us go fast, they did not like to go slow which confused me a lot with older dragons. They were much slower than the younger dragons.

Socra nodded to him, and then he walked back away with the other elders, around us watching every move that we were making. It weirded me out and it made me not want to say anything stupid or anything at all.

"Okay just pretend like I am teaching you something and then we will head the hunters part." She said to me, I nodded to her, it was generally against the rules to be doing this, but at the same time as well, the elders were not really supposed to be paying attention.

I had a thought in my mind that the reason why was because of my father, he probably was watching every move I made carefully to brag to my mother about how all of their kids were failures. Which I could understand where he was coming from.

Normally the oldest son was the one that got the deputy thing, but he was told he was not strong, fast, or smart enough to be the next leader. I felt bad for him on it, and my sister had the chance but she said she did not want that role.

She would tell me how it was always so stressful, and she would never want that and she felt bad for leaders and any dragon that had that sort of role. I could see where she was coming from on that, I always knew that my father did not get that much sleep because he was always too busy taking care of the group.

I always thought it would be cool to be the next leader, but I undestood where she was coming from on that and why she did not want to be the next deputy. I shook my head once again, I would not be the next deputy anymore anyways.

"Why are they listening to us... Is my father that upset about my mother? You don't have to tell me if you do want to." I said to her. She looked up at me and then she shook her head at me. I was a bit confused, I knew that this was not normal for a dragon, I never heard of it before.

"There is another reason, you will find out fairly soon, if you are good at being a warrior and a hunter of course... If you fail at even one of those, you will not find out." She said to me. I looked a bit confused and thought to myself what it could possibly be.

It obviously could not be that I had a chance to be the next deputy could it? No, my father was too upset at us right now. Even if it was, I also knew that I was supposed to learn the ways of becoming a medicine dragon.

"Is it that I am going to be the next deputy?" I asked her. She put her claw on to her lips for me to be hush and then she nodded to me. I was surprised, I knew that it normally was the son or daughter of the leader, but with my father being upset at us I did not think that it could possibly be true at all.

She then began walking up in the air and she nodded for me to follow her, she was a bit older but she was still as fast as ever. But not nearly as fast as me, even though I was young I always knew that I was the fastest dragon in the whole tribe.

She looked at me and then yelled at me to slow down. I did and then I turned back to her, she had a big smile on her face and she nodded at me.

"Alright Jangra... You ready to learn the ways of a hunter?"
