14 SCHAPTER 14: shattered sword

I handed Elisa the deer. She carefully sook it from me, not to get blood on her clothes.

I went to the opposite side of the camp from Yohan's perspective. Which was pretty far from everyone else since they all bundled together.

I sat against a three, looking at everyone in the camp while keeping my ears open for potential ambushes. From my spot under the dark oak three whit golden orange leaves, I could see everything in the camp perfectly.

I could see Alex helping Elisa clean the deer. Gert was as expected sharpening his blade. Allenya was keeping watch over the fire, but it seemed that she just enjoyed pocking sticks in the flames. And Yohan was just like me watching over everyone.

I altered my position to a more comfortable one. The wood started to poke in my back.

When Alex and Elisa where done cleaning the deer they cut it up and hung it above the fire. The smell of roasted deer and the light of the campfire gave off a warm atmosphere. And for the first time in a while I enjoyed something.

Eventually the food was ready. Alex removed the meat from where they hung it above the fire and handed it to everyone along with some soup Allenya made from some vegetables she had packed along with her cooking tools.

"Hey Gustave, you want some?"

"no thank you. I already ate."

Alex wanted to convince me to at least take some of it. However, he then noticed how Gert was glaring at him.

("it seems that Gert still hates me. It would only be logical for him to try to stop the others from being nice to me.")

Alex quickly walked back to the rest of the group so sit with them in the orange light of the fire.

But Gert didn't join them. He walked over to me with is sword ready. I was still sitting against the tree and looked up to him. He tightened his grip on his weapon.

("He is probably going to ask me something about a subject which he is fears will make me angry.")

For a moment he just stood there, probably trying to be as imitating as possible. Then he spoke in a demanding tone that was still soft enough to not be noticed by the others.

"What have you done to them?"

I was shrugged.

"What do you mean?"

A few hairs fell in my eyes. It stung so I wiped them away with a swift motion.

Gert wasn't amused by me basically ignoring him. Rage filled his dark eyes, but for some reason he ad still enough control to talk in a soft voice.

"I mean that you're a demon, jet they are acting like you're just some regular guy. They somehow trust you enough to not be on guard around you while your kind is probably the reason that we have to move to the stone city in the first place."

I shifted my gaze to the rest of the group who were happily eating and talking with each other. Then I looked back at Gert who was still standing in front of me.

"You know, that is indeed strange. But I didn't do anything to them. Maybe that's the reason they trust me. Because I didn't do anything to harm them and even helped you get Yohan back!"

Gert clicked his tongue. "Stop talking shit demon. I know that you have done something to them."

I slowly stood up baring my teeth." Then prove it!"

Then he swung his sword at me. Upon realising this I took a step to the side so he would mis. Gert's blade het the three that I was leaning against just a moment ago. I growled at him. Resisting the urge to jump on him and rip his head off with my teeth.

"Why did you do that?!"

He pulled his sword out of the tree. I was a bit impressed by how fast he managed to do that. He changed his grip on his sword and stood before me again.

"Because you won't stop lying. You said you wanted to join our side because some other demon locked you up, you said you didn't do anything to them and I'm pretty sure your name isn't Gustave."

Having said that he swung his blade at me again. This time with more anger and thus power behind it. I couldn't doge this one, so I tried to catch it out of instinct.

Gert was dumbfounded to see me catch his sword. I laughed still holding the blade of is sword.

"Haven't you heart? You must never swing a blade out of anger. It will only break, and the chards end up cutting you instead."

Then I smacked my other hand against the rusty yet sharp blade of Gert's sword. The already weakened steel didn't oppose much resistance and broke.

I let the half of the blade fell on the ground while Gert hold on to his broken sword. The I took a step in his direction while grinning from ear to ear upon seeing him taking a step back. However I managed to get face to face with him.

"Now attack me if you want to proceed this fight."

I could see the fear on is face as he took another step back.

"Fine have it your way."

He tossed the broken blade on the ground and walked back to the rest of the group. They were all watching us their faces turned pale even that of Allenya.

Gert gave a grumpy "What your al staring at!" as he took a seat next to Allenya.
