Useless Kitty

The clock ticked slowly as Lai Mingjie stared out the window of their hotel suite. Even though his parents were overly cautious in protecting their child, they had never been this aggressive as to cage their almost-thirty-year-old. It only made sense to the demon king when he found out that an influx of death threats had come to their doorstep again. Of course, they were targeting Lai Mingjie like normal.

These stupid immortals could only act like goons ever since they came to the Crimson City. For the demonkind, it was a haven; but for the immortals, it was nothing but a city of corruption. Those who were so pristine wouldn't even bother stepping on a single square meter of this cursed land. The soil, the air, and the water existing in this city were vile and dirty; they chose not to endanger themselves.

Then again, those who wanted to 'have fun' normally descend upon the modernized plains. As long as they wouldn't implicate humans, they could practically do what they wanted. They ended up bullying the demonkind who were reincarnated as humans by the goddess. To them, these demons were nothing but prisoners and tools of practice.

For the longest time, it was like that for Lai Mingjie. However, he had never seen them take actions for a while before this happened. Sending death threats wasn't their style as well; they'd rather come in flesh.

"I should just go to sleep. Damn, even my phone was confiscated. Argh, I feel like a grounded child." Lai Mingjie twisted his lips before moving to lie down. However, the moment he turned his back against the window, a murderous aura washed over him. His eyes widened before he flew to the window and pried it open. The fierce night winds blew on his face and hair as he looked out to the origin of the aura. "The hell..."

Crimson City could only be so big. An immortal general's aura could span kilometers in seconds, and the city could have been coated within a minute. Lai Mingjie bit into his lip as he tried to find a way to get down without getting caught or breaking a bone. He needed to get to Xu Rouguang in case something came up.

"Wait..." Lai Mingjie twitched and watched faint lights flew from the streets to the origin of the aura. "Could it be... they're isolating me from him?" The demon king narrowed his eyes. They never hid from the people and even from the other immortals on the streets of Crimson City. There was a chance that they could devise a simple ploy to get Xu Rouguang away from him. Then again... why would they gang up against their champion?

Before Lai Mingjie could brainstorm, another splash of murderous aura slapped the city. This time, he even trembled in fright. His throat dried up, and even his heart raced. This aura was too familiar... this was surely Xu Rouguang—no, this was General Xu's ice-cold maniacal gust.

The faint lights reached their destination, but two bright lights shot out to the dark sky like fireworks. They then disappeared into the darkness, but Lai Mingjie knew they were still up there—doing who-knows-what. He swallowed the lump in his throat with difficulty before settling down on the floor, looking up at the night sky. Maybe, if he continued watching, he would see what was going on.

Botangca was doing way worse than Lai Mingjie. Two murderous auras from top-tier generals just exploded across the city, and unlike Lai Mingjie, she could recognize the owners of those. She could only grab at the knob of the opened door of her café while looking up at the sky. Why would Immaculate Ivory Qilin descend in their vile realm? Why would the memory-less Xu Rouguang unleash his aura like that?

She wanted to call Lai Mingjie, but she glared at her phone as she almost clawed her own hand. If Xu Rouguang was running amok, then that insolent demon king must be involved. Why else would a fight break out among top-tier generals?

Lai Mingjie, Botangca, and the rest of the demonkind could only cower in fear while there was a stand-off between two top-tier generals. Unknown to them, even Xu Rouguang was confused about why he was being threatened by other generals. Then again, he figured dimwits talk more while fighting. Moreover, if he started cutting off their fingers, they would start bargaining with him. Funny, those were parts of what he remembered vaguely.

This big cat was good and fast, and Xu Rouguang was receiving more wounds from him than he could inflict on the other. However, the deathless general was never afraid of losing any limbs at all. As long as he could keep his head, he could continue listening to the grumbles of the other. Right, he was expressing concerns Xu Rouguang had never an idea about.

All he spoke about were consequences and the death toll. The man never spoke about what he did exactly, and Xu Rouguang was losing patience. He figured the big cat never knew anything at all—only that it was his fault. This kind of fool served no purpose to him anymore.

"What's wrong, General Xu? Feeling too weak to continue fighting me?" General Qilin laughed out as he stared at the deathless general who suffered from a number of cuts. Blood dyed most of his clothes, and he suddenly remained motionless in the sky. Could it be that he had won over this beast they all feared? "Come on! Fight! If you still can!"

"Hm, this fight is already useless to me." Xu Rouguang withdrew his aura and shook his head. "At first, I thought it would be fruitful. I didn't think you'd also be a useless kitty."

"What?! How dare you look down on me?! I'm not the one bleeding all over!" General Qilin brandished his spear and flew straight towards Xu Rouguang. The tip of his Celestial Spear lit up, a sign of a powerful attack. He noticed how Xu Rouguang didn't even bother blocking him, and so he felt the liberty to shoot it out as soon as he got in range. "Spear Piercing Through the Clouds!"

Xu Rouguang only welcomed the attack and took it head-on without blocking. The light shot out at his body and poked a hole through his chest. However, his body didn't burst as it should. General Qilin's eyes widened as his attack only caused minimum damage to his senior. The deathless general flashed towards the other, glowing in bright light as his body regenerated its prior state. Now spotless and unharmed, Xu Rouguang pierced through with his hand swiping like a sharp spear whistling loudly in the wind.

General Qilin managed to dodge, but his left arm was blasted by the force. Even half of his torso suffered from the impact of their collision. The general yelled in pain and retreated to the side with haste. His eyes grew fearful as he realized that Xu Rouguang could have killed him in one move... so what was the point of their battle exactly? What was it that he failed to deliver?

The other patrolling immortals and came to stop them could only hold their breaths. Immaculate Ivory Qilin was already considered one of their greatest warriors, and yet, he could not still make General Xu serious in a fight. Perhaps, they had all forgotten how horrifying the fights between Emodao and Xu Rouguang were hundreds of thousands of years ago. General Xu only came back from the Abyss, and they had all forgotten how much of a terrorizing figure he really was.

A cold hiss came from the Head Patrol Commander before he rose up to where they were. "General Xu, General Qilin, please stop this fight. We wished not to invoke the wrath of the goddess."

Xu Rouguang only nodded before flying down and leaving the bleeding cat. However, he paused mid-air and smiled at the other. "Though I have to say, stray kitty, you reminded me how much I love bathing in fresh blood."
