Defeat The Ice Demon

['Sora' has added a new quest: Defeat the Ice Demon]

[Prize: level Capacity +15]

Dan aimed both his revolvers at the ice demon and rapidly squeezed the trigger. The smell of gunsmoke filled the air as the rounds were fired into the creatures chest.

(Ice Demon: Hp: 14,400/15,000)

"I need to reload again, cover me!" he shouted.

"We're on it." Jill replied.

She pulled a green gem out of her pocket and squeezed it in the middle of her palm as she chanted.

"Whirling Fire: Fire blast!"

A giant spinning flame appeared and shot through the air, blasting into the creature's face. Steam covered the entire area.

It began to clear as the creature reached out to grab Jill.

Quickly, Katsuya tackled her out of the way. They stumbled across the ground as the creature began following them.

"Not so fast!" A voice shouted.

As Katsuya and Jill began to get back on their feet, they realized the shout had come from Cole.

Cole charged at the ice demon and firmly shoved his palm against its face.

(Ice Demon: Hp: 11,876/15,000)

Suddenly, the creature reached its hand out and picked him up by the throat and squeezed as Cole gasped for air.

"I have to act fast! Monster, activate." Katsuya thought to himself.

He tightly gripped his dagger and held it back, charging his throw.

With a sudden fast movement, it shot through the air, stabbing into the creatures head.

(Ice Demon: Hp: 9,248/15,000)

The demons grip loosened and Cole was able to free himself. He kneeled down in exhaustion while trying to catch his breath.

Katsuya noticed that the creature was frozen in place as if it couldn't move.

He remembered that his dagger had a 5% chance for stunning an opponent. That was why the creature couldn't move.

"Everyone, quick. Attack it while it's stunned!" He shouted.

Cole quickly stood up and slammed his fist into the creature's chest, shouting.

"That's payback!!"

Dan had finished reloading his guns as he ran over to the creature.

He held the barrel of both guns to the Ice demon's head.

"Taste my special bullets!"

What he meant by that was, when he went to reload, he placed a special kind of bullets in his guns. These bullets did x4 the damage of normal bullets.

Gunshots boomed through the air as the smoke was visible.

(Ice statue: Hp: 4,800/5,000)

"Yes, we're almost there." Katsuya thought to himself.

A chill shot down his spine a warning from his A.I, Sora, came into view.

[Warning: Enemy has activated a skill 'Speed Double']

The creature suddenly disappeared from the spot it once stood and was now behind Dan.

He was struck, and his body immediately split in half. Everyone's eyes widened as they saw a red liquid squirt from his body.

Thump!

Dan's top lower half fell to the floor.

Cole was filled with rage rushed at the creature, preparing to swing his fist.

"You damn mons-"

The monster took a step and was suddenly behind him. Cole was standing there, headless. His body slowly fell to the ground.

Jill was in a state of fear as she slowly took steps back. She stepped on a rock and slipped, falling on her back.

Thump!

The creature turned its head, facing Katsuya and Jill.

[Your skill 'Adapt' has activated]

Katsuya was somewhat shocked as he had never witnessed anyone lose their life right before his very eyes. But due to his 'Monster' skill, he wasn't all that scared as it had temporarily removed his emotion barriers.

Jill's voice shouted.

"Don't just stand there, we have to run!"

Katsuya stayed in place with a somewhat dark look in his eyes.

"No, It's too fast. Running would be pointless. We have to fight."

"Are you crazy?!" She replied.

Katsuya walked over to his dagger that was on the floor and picked it up.

"I need you to cast a spell. Can you do it?"

"N-no, we have to run." she insisted.

"Jill, if you don't help me out here, we're both going to die too. Can you cast a speed enhancing spell on me?"

Jill was scared, more than she had ever been before. After a few seconds of silence, she gathered her courage and stood up.

"Yes, I got it."

Claws grew out of the ice demon's hands as it began walking forward.

"Crap...here it comes." Katsuya thought to himself

The creature suddenly leaped forward, appearing directly in front of him.

Katsuya felt sharp knives hit him in the chest as he was sent flying across the room.

Thump!

He fell to the floor, tumbling across.

(Katsuya: 2,316/3,253)

He quickly jumped back to his feet as the creature began walking towards Jill.

"I won't be fast enough to save her once he runs. I'll have to throw my dagger" Katsuya thought to himself.

He looked at the blade he held in his hand, knowing he only had one shot. Though the chance that he would miss was only 20% he still knew there was a small chance he could miss.

He tightly gripped his dagger and swung it forward, throwing it through the air.

Swoosh!

[Warning: enemy has activated a skill 'Strengthen']

The dagger launched through the air and into the creatures back.

(Ice Demon: Hp: 3,520/15,000)

The demon turned and glared at him.

It took a step, then was gone from sight once again.

Katsuya was struck in the back and was troubled across the floor a second time.

(Katsuya: Hp: 1,379/3,045)

"Katsuya, are you alright!" Shouted Jill as she rushed over to him.

He slowly got up and patted the dust of his torn clothes.

"I'm fine. Can you cast that spell, now? I don't know if I can take another hit."

Jill reached into her pocket and pulled out a shiny blue gem.

"I spent good money one this. It's a gem that will increase my magic's effectiveness by 800%. It'll turn into dust once I'm done though. Hold still, okay?"

She held the gem tightly in the palm of her hand while placing her other hand on his back.

Jill began chanting.

"Enhancement: Speed Boost."

A blue light began glowing around Katsuya's body.

He felt as if he suddenly weighed less.

"Hurry up, you only have eighty seconds until it wears off."

"I'm one it." He replied.

Katsuya dashed forward at an amazing speed which Jill could not track. To her, it was like looking at a blurred movement on a picture.

Katsuya appeared behind the Ice demon and yanked the dagger from its back.

"I'll be taking this."

(Ice Demon: Hp: 3,487/15,000)

Quickly, the creature turned around and swung its claws at him but...missed as Katsuya ducked. One powerful swing, Katsuya pushed his fist against the creature's stomach.

Its body was suddenly blown apart and the ice flew all around as if the demon was hit by a train.

['Adapt' has deactivated]

Jill had increased Katsuya's speed but didn't expect him to finish the creature off in a single strike.

Her face said it all, she was shocked.

Katsuya let out a breath of relief.

"Stat check."

A screen containing phrases came into view.

(Katsuya: Class: Unspecialized

Level:20/29

Hp: 7,537

Intelligence: 120

Mp: 2,872

Atk: 2,512

Speed: 193

"With these stats, I'm on the level of an A-rank."

After Katsuya had beaten the two Ice men, he had gone up to the level of a B-ranker. Which meant that in theory he was equal to two C-rankers and one D-ranker.

Now, he was on the level of an A-rank, meaning that in theory, he was equal to two B-rankers.

Katsuya noticed a small glowing ball that was surrounded by the ice from the creature.

These were called "Boss orbs."

They went for high prices when selling it to a guild. The prices varied depending on what rank the boss was.

D-rank boss orbs= $5,000

C-rank boss orbs= $10,000

B-rank boss orbs= $25,000

A-rank boss orbs= $50,000

S-rank boss orbs= $225,000

Silver-rank boss orbs= $900,000

Gold-rank boss orbs= $4,050,000

Platinum-rank boss orbs= 7,650,000

Katsuya walked over and picked up the boss orb.

"I get good money off of this?" He thought to himself.

Katsuya began walking out of the boss room as Jill stopped him.

"Wait, what about Dan and Cole's bodys."

It was regrettable but they couldn't take them because there was a chance that the dungeon would disappear if they took too long.

"We'll have to leave them. We can't risk the dungeon disappearing while we're in it. If that happened, we would wake up in the alternate world, with almost no way of getting out."

Jill was clearly saddened by this fact.

"Y-yeah...I guess you're right."

Katsuya began walking once more.

"Come on, let's go."

--------------------------------

(Beast Slayer Guild)

Jill approached the counter and began talking to the female guild worker.

"We just finished clearing a D-rank dungeon."

The guild worker wore an unsure look on her face as she replied.

"Sorry, we'll have to see proof in order for you to claim a reward. Do you maybe have the boss orb?"

Katsuya walked over and placed the D-rank boss orb on the counter.

"This is it. Also, we'll be splitting the reward in half since it's just us two.

"Understood. I'll have to take this to the back to examine it really quick. Give me a second." said the guild worker.

She proceeded to open a door leading to a back room, closing it as she went inside.

"So Katsuya, do you wanna explain to me how you finished off the boss in a single hit?" Jill asked.

"Well, you, Dan and Cole weakened it enough that I was able you one shot it." Katsuya replied.

"I already know that but, the boss still had around three thousand health left. You would have to be on the level of at least a B-ranker to take down that much in just one hit. Have you been hiding your strength from me? I that's true, then my dad would still be alive if you helped hi-"

Katsuya interrupted her before she could finish the last word of her sentence.

"No. I didn't hide my strength. If I'm being honest, I recently got my own system, the A.I skill. That's how I got just a little stronger."

Jill seemed to have regretted her accusation.

"Oh...I'm sorry. I didn't mean to start accusing you for my dad's death."

"It's fine." He replied.

At that moment, the backroom door opened, and out came the guild worker.

"It checked out. You each will be receiving $2,750."

The guild worker then handed a wad of cash to Katsuya and Jill.

"You can go ahead and go home. I have to stay to tell the guild about Dan and Cole." said Jill.

Katsuya felt somewhat responsible for their deaths even though it really wasn't his fault.

"Oh, r-right. I'm sorry I wasn't fast enough to save them back then."

"It wasn't your fault so, don't worry about it. After all, I couldn't have done anything to help them either. I wish I had brought more members along. If I did, then maybe they would still be alive."

Jill then turned around as if she was trying to hide her face as she continued talking.

"You can go ahead and leave now."

Katsuya noticed a tear slide all the way down her cheek.

"Okay, I'll be going now."

He turned around and began walking towards the exit.

(Home)

5 Hours later….Katsuya sat in the dark living room, watching T.V.

He was watching a show about a man who has a powerful knight that traveled to different lands, slaying monsters to save towns. The man was a hero among knights, one who never lost against the forces of evil.

The more Katsuya watched it, the more he wished he was like that man.

"If only I could be some kind of hero, saving lives. But there's no way that could be me. I failed to save Dan and Cole in that dungeon."

He was having regrets about becoming an adventurer as he realized the many dangers the job had.

Buzzz

Buzzz

His phone began to vibrate on the nightstand next to him. As he grabbed it, he saw that he had received a message

{I new message from: Beast Slayer Guild}

"I wonder what it's about."

Katsuya tapped his thumb on the 'Messages' app and began to read the message that was sent.

{We have received news about your recent participation in clearing a D-rank dungeon. Your number in D-rank has been changed.

Your new number will be shown below.

Number: 733}

"Well at least it's some progress. I'll need to reach number one in order to have them scan my overall status again. Maybe I should participate in an A-rank dungeon raid next."

Katsuya was running out of time to pay the medical bills. He had eight days left.

He almost had enough but still needed around five thousand more dollars.

"Tomorrow, I'll head over to the guild and see if I can find a quest about a dungeon raid. Or, I could try to clear a D-rank dungeon by myself. My current stats do put me on the level of an A-rank. I'm basically equal to a team of ten D-rankers."
