1 A dream of a past long forgotten

A feeling of weightlessness washes through my body.

A darkness without fear floods my sight.

A suffocating silence.

While drifting, a tinge of red slowly suffuses my darkness and with it sounds come.

Of fire raging through the forest around me.

Of sudden death singing through the air.

Each time it sings a soul wanes.

Of the scream of .... mother... maybe?

Another soul turns dark.

I feel my own heart pumping faster than it should.

Fear, even if i don't understand anything.

Fear, from all this Fear around me.

Fear from the screams of all beasts and plants, from all mortal and spirit around me.

Panic.

It takes my senses, my tiny hand reach out, my lips try to call for help.

But the smoke takes my breath and the heat takes my strength.

And still something answered.

~

My eyes shoot open, my breath short but i don't move. A familiar pressure on my chest and a familiar warmth radiating from the tiny heaters around me bring me back from the dream.... which had me panicking? I already forgot, but well dreams be dreams.

As i look around me i see the small faces of the tiny heaters around me. Even the ones that should be similar in age are so small. From the smallest, Tirae, to our biggest, Koarl. I slowly, to not wake them up, with as little movement as possible, draw the ones that moved away while sleeping closer and put the somewhat lacking blanket over everybody as well as possible.

I smile happily as i close my eyes, trying to sleep again. In winter its best to preserve as much energy as possible. Especially since we have almost not enough firewood. Well who am i kidding. We surely don't have enough. But its fine. If we preserve as much as possible and i can get some scraps from the carpenters we can make it without trouble.

And in the worst case Sister Nina will get some more from the church.

....

Slow breaths ring through the small house that was the orphanage.

Everybody sleeps.

All is well.

All is warm.

For now...
