3. THE GIRL WITH POWERS

Carter shifted uncomfortably in the chair. She had been sitting in the same spot for hours and her patience was running thin. Turning her head slightly, Carter looked outside of the glass window only to see nothing. She had been sitting in a conference room of Martial Academy for the longest and wanted to do nothing more but return to her old life.

She remembered going home after the talk with her grandma to see Meghan sitting on the couch with an uncomfortable look on her face. They tried conversing with one another but it was extremely awkward. Carter knew that their friendship would never be the same. She told Meghan that she would be moving out and leaving for Zims in which Meghan agreed with her decision. Carter knew she didn't care where she was going as long as she wasn't under the same roof as her. In return, Meghan promised to not reveal Carter's secret to anyone.

The next day, Carter woke earlier than usual to finish packing the rest of her clothing. Carter called her grandmother and asked her to contact John Porter in which she did. She loaded her car up and drove from New York, New York to Zims, New York. Carter arrived at the large gates of Zims and was greeted by a few guards who stood at the large gold gates. They opened them to let her in and from there she was escorted to the academy.

Carter hadn't met many people and the ones that she did meet didn't utter a word to her. She was just told to sit in the conference room and wait. Groaning, Carter looked around the room in hopes of finding something to do but sighed in defeat when she realized that there was nothing else in the room other than herself, the large brown table, and the chairs that surrounded the table.

"What's taking so long?" Carter complained.

Suddenly, the door opened and a man signaled for her to follow him. Carter stood up and made her way down the hall as the unknown mad lead her to her destination. She kept her head down to avoid all contact with everyone she passed by. The man pulled open a door as she stepped forward only to enter another room. She looked around to see that it was an office. There was a bookshelf filled with books, a large desk by the nearest window and a man leaned against it.

The man wore a black suit with a maroon tie. He seemed to be older but not too old. He was a bit on the taller side and had grey hair that complimented his blue eyes. He smiled brightly as he looked at Carter.

"Hello Carter! It's nice to have you here! My name is John Porter and I will be guiding you as you are to join this program. Martial Academy is here to help you control your powers and that's it. We are here to prepare you for the real world!" He said.

"Ok." Carter mumbled. John watched the girl as his smile dropped. She was nervous. He had dealt with many students like this before but it was different with Carter. He feared that she wouldn't give the academy a chance.

"I apologize for keeping you waiting for so long. I don't usually do this but I had to cancel any and all meetings because of your arrival." John revealed. Carter looked up at the man in confusion.

"Why?"

"Because Carter, I'm here to help you transition into this new chapter in your life." John announced as he gave Carter a reassuring smile.

"Please don't give me any special treatment, sir." Carter stated. "There's nothing special about me and I'm sure there are hundreds of more powerful mutants than me. I'm just here because I need to learn how to control it. After that, I will be out of your hair."

What Carter didn't know was John's ability. John was called The Godfather to many. He was as old as they come yet he aged slower and his power was he could see through emotions. He could pick of the energy and feel whenever another mutant was close by.

He had met many mutants before but none of them were like Carter. John knew Carter's mother. He had taught her and he was also trying to help solve her murder as well so she was automatically protective of Carter. However, John could feel that there was something much more powerful to Carter and that whatever power she managed to showcase was barely the scratch of the surface.

"Want to know something, Carter? I have the power to feel when another one of my kind is near me. I can touch you and feel or see your past, present, and future. I am the oldest mutant to live." John revealed.

This caught Carter's attention. Looking up at the man, Carter asked him the main question that went through her mind. "How old are you?"

"I was born in 1756,"

There was an awkward silence that filled the room as Carter stared at the ground with wide eyes. John chuckled for a second before leaning off of the desk and making his way towards Carter.

"Carter." He started as he placed a hand on her shoulder. Carter watched as John's eyes widened. John's didn't move an inch as he stood there with his hand on her shoulder. Right when Carter was about to say something, John removed his hand from her shoulder.

"Are you okay?" Carter asked the odd man. John backed away from Carter before turning around and walking to his desk again. He sat in the chair and sighed.

"Carter, you are the most powerful mutant to exist. You're even more powerful than me but you don't realize it yet." He revealed.

"What?"

"You are power itself and you're the main one who needs to learn how to control those powers as well as figure out what other powers you possess."

"Other powers?" Carter exclaimed. "I don't have any other powers, sir! I can move objects with my mind but that's it!"

John gave Carter a sad smile and shook his head. "Carter, I don't think that's the only thing you can do."

"You are mistaken!"

"And," John started but he stopped before he could finish his sentence. Carter walked forward to the man as she gave him a pleasing look.

"And what, sir?" She asked. "Tell me!"

"Your life is about to change the moment you step out that door. I need you to be careful! Keep your guard up!" He started. John sighed as he shook his head. "You are the answer, Carter. You are the bridge that will unite mutants with humans."
