1 first piece of the broken cage : wake up

sometimes the best thing she could do was to look at the stars and try not to get swallowed by the darkness and try to ignore the piercing eyes of the moon that seem to be following her everywhere.

the bed was colder than she remembered. the sheets having that fresh smell in the crack of the night.

funny how her bed felt uncomfortable to her

she struggled to get the bedsheets off of her tiny body. the soft fabrics making funny noises as she got up.

her back gave a loud crack as she stood up.

yet another sleepless night. she blinked, a yawn was clawing at her throat, she clenched her jaw tight to bit it back.

her mirror was not shining anymore, her room was colder and her eyes no longer had that unblinking gaze that pierced people in their place. she padded over to her bathroom.

the tiny apartment she owned was aged beyond her oldest grandfather. not that she had seen him or something. she doubted she had seen a single of her relatives.

the bathroom door opened and she stepped inside. the light hurting her golden eyes. sleepiness was not a thing that could make her calm down.

the broken mirror was looking at her as if she owned something. the long cracks making her skin crawl

as she looked at the broken mirror she missed the old days.

when she would always feel the presence of her older brother around the dusty apartment.

her brother's angelic feature staring at her as if she was the most important person in the world.

his expression changing from worry to pure happiness when she would knock on his room.

where there was no attack, no destroyed buildings, no homeless children.

where the only fear she had of the outside was the weather or how late she would return home and her brother would get mad.

life isn't that unbearable if you have someone you can count on.

But to Diana life was way more of a bastard than any of the bugs outside of her home. life was even more annoying than a level of games that you just couldn't cross and reach the next level.

she was stuck in that.

no forgiveness, no going back, no five lives, no restart. what you've lost in lost forever.

and she had lost the one and only person who was all she had left in her life.

the only valuable person that was left for her, aside from Tia, her best friend.

sometimes she would look at the children grabbing their parent's hand depending on them.

but the word ' parent ' didn't have a meaning for her . she had never seen one.

Adrian used to say that their parents were two of the best people the world had to offer. not that the world was kind enough to OFFER something.

dad was kind, sometimes too kind. he would've done anything just so the smiles on their faces wouldn't drop to the cold bottomless ocean they used to live near.

mum was a simple housewife but she had the talent that allowed her to make the best of the dishes.

she was the most beautiful. and he used to say that they would go around with empty bellies just so theirs could be full. and he used to say that she looked a lot like their mother.

' sometimes when I look at you I miss her even more '

she didn't want to look like her, Diana never wanted to be the reason for her brother's pain.

ever since their parent's death, he worked himself to exhaustion level.

how she would glare at him for spending too much time on work than his health, how Tia would shout at him for going to the hospital so he would have a check-up and see what's wrong with his failing body.

a sigh left her dry mouth, she was overthinking again.

Diana glared hard at her reflection, the bruised skin under her sore eyes seemed to never go away these days. the brown braided hair falling off of her right bony shoulder that seemed to never get fat. the too-pale skin showing signs of not going out enough.

Diana blinked. once...twice

"you don't have a family, you're alone and you are nothing but a burden to Tia..."

she chuckled. she was going crazy.

with a deep sigh that seemed to come out of her deepest depths, Diana stepped away and turned the knob down, and returned to her room.

the bed was near one of her walls. a small bookcase towering above it .tons of unread books or half-read ones were hanging from it.

next to the bed a few inches away was a nightstand, full of huge cups of coffee.

she turned her head to the right.

her window was open.

ahh, so that was why it was so cold.

she shrugged.

with a very ungirly groan, she shook her hips.

the pajama pants, settling on them. the design being Spongebob who was grinning like everything was fine and okay.

she scratched the side of her collar bone, the necklace which was hanging off of her long bony neck getting tangled in her fingers.

she was wearing nothing but her bra and the pants. Diana sighed and stepped near her door.

she took a deep breath and begun to slowly open it. the tall wooden thing gave a shrieking noise as if it was being split open.

Diana cringed, so much for being silent. she peeked from the door to her small living room. and just as she expected Tia was snoring on her broken cough.

her short blond hair was visible from the left arm of the couch. Diana bit her bottom lip as she walked on her toes to go and take a closer look at her friend.

empty or half full bottles of alcohol were all over the place, she cursed as she bumped into one, fortunately, it didn't fall, only wiggled around itself until it fell on its spot.

she let go of the breath she didn't know she was holding.

she glanced towards Tia, her golden eyes settling on her.

Tia was wearing her very revealing black tank top that was falling off of her left shoulder. her other arm dropped over her eyes.

she was sleeping on her back witch added to the fact that her neck was not very covered and Diana could see that she was full of hickeys.

she rolled her eyes, no wonder there were many bottles here, besides the air reeked of vodka.

then an idea came to her mind ... a smirk found its way across her lips.

it was pretty late and two hours later would be dawn. with Tia's state, she would sleep much longer and suffer from a terrible hangover.

did she shrug, well it was her problem, dowing how many?

wow, that was a lot. so yeah, downing six freaking bottles of those shits would do this shit to anyone.

Diana called it luck tonight. Tia would never let her step a foot outside at this hour . they weren't the same age and Tia was Adrian's freaking girlfriend but Tia always acted like she had more life experience, sometimes Diana wanted to shout at her and make her understand that being taller and getting more guys doesn't make you more experienced.

Anyway, for some stupid reasons, Tia wouldn't let her out of her sight. it got worse after Adrian got captured. on top of that Tia was a Gifted.

the Gifteds were 20% of their damaged population.

Gifted was a title given to humans who possessed unusual abilities.

give Tia for a great example. the girl could touch anything and then give the entire history of the thing she just touched.

Adrian was strange though. ..he could gather things and mold them together with a drop of his blood.

Their population used to be about 80%.

but after the attack, it changed completely.

The queen who was a human ruled the world. she was the head of the attack.

she remembered it like it was yesterday.

she was eating popcorn with Tia in her room when an explosion happened just in the other street, Adrian rushed to their room and told both of them to get their things and leave as soon as possible.

they rushed to the streets and ran as fast as Their legs could carry them. the Gifteds being the protection squad, trying to get the queen's army down were lost and in the end, she won.

the earth was split open, pieces flying everywhere, mountains falling to the ground, everything was falling apart.

the soldiers got a hold of her brother . the queen (somehow ) knew her brother's powers.

she made him stick the earth back together, as much as his damaged body would allow him. big no giant vessels crumbled the roads, breaking the mountains and rising from the oceans.

it's been 5 years but she could still hear Adrian's painful yells coming from the hollow parts of the earth.

trees became red, no flower other than roses would bloom, it was as if every year was fall. seasons wouldn't change, the sun barely rose from the sky, snow and rain were starting to become the one and single weather everyone knew. everything was falling apart.

the earth wasn't stuck together, but a bridge was built over the hollow where her brother was caged.

no one was safe on the streets other than normal humans. she looked at her own chopped hands and gave a painful smirk,

she was powerless.

she looked over at Tia's sleeping form one more time before grabbing her friend's dirty t-shirt that was dropped to the floor, wearing it, and leaving the apartment.

______________________________________________

the air was damp, just like every night. the cloudy sky above was mocking her very existence.

it's been years since the moon shone.

the streets were half empty, or half full?

she never understood the difference.

drunks were slowly making their way back home. children snuggling closer to each other for warmth their groaning empty bellies were Their only lullaby. Diana wondered sometimes if they remembered their mother's singing to them. she sure didn't remember a single one HER mother sang.

she took off-speed, going to the only place that brought her some comfort.

the split.

earth was shattered. like a glass that was thrown to the ground. dark red vessel breaking the ground apart. blood going slowly threw them . that was the only sign that made her not forget that her brother was still suffering . she clenched her hands into fists. her nails making those half-moons sing on the inner side of her cold palms.

she was running now going to her end of the world, the problem was solved.

earth now ....was neither round nor flat...it was a broken land.

______________________________________________

by the time she reached her end of the world, the moon was slowly kissing the sky for the last time until he was reborn.

she took her usual place near the broken rocks and leaned against one of them. the sharp edges hurting her back before being a pattern that her skin knew enough to not hurt.

she took a look at her surrounding. no trees, no roads, no VESSEL.

only rocks and fallen mountain.

no one would dare come here. it was a small piece of earth that was not part of Adrian's body.

you had to jump down to go on it. if you were lucky you'd fall into it. if you weren't ....well.

a noisy yawn escaped her lips, funny how she couldn't sleep in her bed but she would act like a drugged person in there.

or maybe she was drugged. maybe if she closed her eyes long enough everything will be okay. cities would go back to normal. flowers would smell less like blood, the sky would be blue again, smiles wouldn't be so fake, Adrian would come home.

you'll be okay he said. I'll be right back he said.

but he wasn't back when he went away leaving a crying Diana and a shaking Tia in that cell all alone.

she wasn't just missing him, she was mad too.

'"he had to be sacrificed, so the earth would survive "

a voice whispered.

' but ...what about me? am I not worth saving ?"

she wanted to kick the ground, scream from the top of her lungs.

what about me ?!

but she was exhausted. she leaned more against the rock. tears found Their ways down her flushed cheeks. as the sun rose to the sky a sob broke the wall of her throat. she wanted freedom...not this broken cage.
